Macy Gray didn't try to hide it, but it's clear -- the "I Try" singer is in deep with a collection agency ... and it's all because she allegedly stiffed her publicity firm over $43,000.

According to docs filed last week in L.A. County Superior Court, Gray entered into a $2,000/month contract with a PR firm back in 2005 and racked up a $43,378.77 bill ... which she refused to pay.

The collection agency wants her to pay every cent, stat. So far, no word from Gray's reps.

Macy Gray made quite an impression on the "Dancing with the Stars" judges last night -- but it had more to do with her breaking out the phrase "busted my cherry" on live television than her Viennese Waltz.
