Missing "Terminator 3" actor Nick Stahl has told his wife he has checked in to rehab, TMZ has learned. 

The 32-year-old actor was reported missing earlier this week by his wife Rose -- but e-mailed friends yesterday to say he was okay and would be unreachable for the next 30 days so he could get help.

Stahl's wife, Rose, tells TMZ she spoke to the actor last night -- very briefly -- and he told her he checked into rehab. Rose says she double-checked with the rehab this morning to make sure he was still there -- and he was. 

Rose tells TMZ she is not even thinking about divorce right now -- she is just glad he is safe. Rose says the couple's daughter has been asking about Nick's whereabouts lately ... and Rose is glad she can now say that daddy is safe and will be home soon.

Rose says she plans to visit Nick in rehab as much as possible, but she doesn't know how long his stay in rehab will be.

According to our sources, Stahl emailed friends yesterday and apologized for scaring them. We're told Stahl told friends he was getting treatment and would be out of contact for the next 30 days. 

Our sources say Stahl's friends and family hope he's telling the truth ... but they are skeptical.  

We're told that Stahl's wife, the one who reported him missing, was not on the email.


A rep for the LAPD tells TMZ the missing persons case will remain open for now -- an email is not enough for them to close the file on it.

The LAPD has received multiple tips in the Nick Stahl missing person case ... from people who claim they have spotted the "Terminator 3" actor since he was reported missing last week.

Law enforcement sources tell TMZ ... investigators have been following up on the leads ... but so far, no contact has been made with Nick.

TMZ broke the story ... Stahl's wife filed a missing persons report with the LAPD this week, saying she hasn't seen or heard from him since May 9th.

Stahl's wife is concerned the actor has been frequenting Skid Row in Downtown L.A. -- a known drug spot.

TMZ obtained photographs of Nick at a bar in Downtown L.A. on Wednesday May 2nd ... where witnesses tell us he appeared intoxicated ... but no more than your average bar patron.


Sources close to Nick tell TMZ he has reached out to friends via email to tell them he is ok and seeking treatment. 

Nick Stahl -- the actor who played John Connor in "Terminator 3" -- is missing ... this according to his wife.

Law enforcement officials confirm ... Stahl's wife filed a missing person's report with the L.A.P.D. on Monday ... saying she last saw the 32-year-old actor on May 9.

Sources tell TMZ ... it is believed Stahl had been frequenting the Skid Row area of Downtown Los Angeles recently ... and there are concerns he may have gotten himself involved in some bad stuff.

Back in February, Nick's wife had filed court papers, expressing serious concerns that Nick may be using drugs ... and sources say she fears drugs may have something to do with his disappearance.

Stahl's rep declined to comment on the situation.

"Terminator 3" star Nick Stahl has been charged with the most heinous crime in the universe -- not paying a taxi driver -- after allegedly failing to come up with enough cash to cover an $84 fare.

TMZ broke the story ... Nick was arrested back in January when he took a long cab ride to Hollywood -- and found himself a little short on cash when it came time to pay the tab. Nick fessed up to the driver, who then flagged down a cop.

According to law enforcement sources, Nick was charged with "defrauding a taxi operator" -- and has since pled "no contest." As a result, Nick was ordered to pay a $50 fine.

But since Nick spent nearly an entire day in jail following his arrest, the judge suspended the fine. It's unclear if the cab driver ever got his money.

"Terminator 3" star Nick Stahl's wife is tightening the reigns on her estranged husband -- asking a judge to limit his visitation rights with their daughter to 8 hours per week ... with proof he hasn't used drugs in the 24 hours beforehand.

Nick's wife Roseann filed the docs in L.A. County Superior Court, claiming she no longer lives with Nick as of last month -- and things must have ended badly ... because she now wants Nick limited to a mere 8 hours a week of "monitored visitation" with their daughter.

According to the docs, Roseann is willing to let Nick see their 2-year-old only while under the supervision of a professional visitation monitor ... "without Nicolas having used drugs in the past 24 hours."

Roseann is serious too -- claiming she wants "proof of a negative result for a test for drugs and alcohol within the 24 hours prior to his scheduled visitation time."

Roseann says she also wants child support because she has no job. According to Roseann, Nick raked in approximately $500,000 in the last year. A rep for Nick had no comment.

Nick Stahl found himself a little short on cash Friday night when his cab driver told him his bill was $84 ... so then Nick Stahl found himself arrested, TMZ has learned. 

Law enforcement sources tell TMZ ... when Stahl arrived at his destination in Hollywood, he told the cab driver he just didn't have the cash or credit to pay the fare. We're told the cabbie then flagged down a nearby officer, and Nick was arrested. 

Stahl was booked at 8:52 AM on Friday and was not released until 3:42 PM the next day, after posting $500 bail.

Calls to Shahl's rep were not returned.
