Rosa Parks

Civil rights icon Rosa Parks was born as Rosa Louise McCauley on February 4, 1913 in Tuskegee, Alabama to James and Leona Edwards McCauley. She had a younger brother, Sylvester. She took education seriously, but due to illnesses in her family, didn’t graduate from high school until 1934, a couple of years after marrying husband Raymond Parks on December 1832.

On December 1, 1955, Parks was arrested for refusing to give up her seat on a bus in Montgomery, Alabama to a while man. People went on to boycott the bus system. In 1957, Parks relocated to Detroit and became a deaconess at the African Methodist Episcopal Church in 1964, worked for Congressman John Conyers from 1965-1988, and founded the Rosa and Raymond Parks Institute for Self Development in February 1987. She received 43 honorary doctorate degrees, the Medal of Freedom from President Clinton, the Congressional Gold Medal of Honor, and countless other awards. The Rosa Parks Library and Museum was built by Troy State University at Montgomery on the site where she had been arrested. Parks passed away on October 24, 2005, but her legacy lives on his history and in the four books she co-authored.
