Call it car-ma: 'Cars' has met an 'An Inconvenient Truth.' It won't be the panacea for Hollywood's box office malaise. The Pixar film's $62.8 million opening weekend was less than Hollywood was expecting (maybe because it failed to feature any hybrids?) but it's paltry only when compared with what the last two Pixar movies have done.
Of course, that won't stop a few snarky comments from being uttered about the movie's slightly-under-expectations opening, as you can see in the Los Angeles Times today: "Pixar is like the parent who has a straight-A student: One day the child comes home with a B-plus," said Anthony Valencia, an analyst at money management firm TCW in Los Angeles.
But what's really vexing Hollywood isn't opening weekend -- it's the weekend after that.

Tyler Perry fans reunited at theaters for another tale of mad black women. "Tyler Perry's Madea's Family Reunion," a comic drama in which writer-director Perry also stars in three roles, debuted as the weekend's No. 1 movie with $30.25 million, according to studio estimates Sunday.
It was a second gold mine for Lionsgate Films, which also released Perry's "Diary of a Mad Black Woman," the movie that opened as No. 1 with $21.9 million on the same weekend last year.
Lionsgate hopes to have a third Perry movie out over the same weekend next year, said Steve Rothenberg, the company's president of distribution.

Inspector Clouseau bumbled his way to the top of the box office as Steve Martin's "The Pink Panther" debuted with $21.7 million to lead a rush of new releases.
New Line's horror sequel "Final Destination 3" ran a close second with $20.1 million, followed by Universal's animated "Curious George" at No. 3 with $15.3 million and the Warner Bros. thriller "Firewall" starring Harrison Ford in fourth with $13.8 million, according to studio estimates Sunday.
The overall box office rose slightly despite the Winter Olympics and a Northeast snowstorm, both of which kept many movie-goers at home. The top 12 movies took in $106.8 million, up 3 percent over the same weekend last year, when "Hitch" opened as the No. 1 movie with $43.2 million.
After a slump in which attendance dropped 7 percent in 2005, Hollywood is off to a better start this year. Revenues are at just over $1 billion, up 8 percent from last year's. Factoring in higher ticket prices, attendance has risen 5 percent, according to box-office tracker Exhibitor Relations.

Horror fans remained on the line for "When a Stranger Calls," a remake of the scary movie about a terrorized baby sitter that debuted at No. 1 with $22 million over the typically sluggish Super Bowl weekend.
Distributor Sony, whose Screen Gems banner released "When a Stranger Calls," said it was the best Super Bowl debut ever, beating the $19 million haul the studio's horror flick "Boogeyman" took in over the same weekend last year.
20th Century Fox's "Big Momma's House 2" fell to second place with $13.35 million, lifting its 10-day total to $45.4 million, according to studio estimates Sunday.
The weekend's other new wide release, Focus Features' romantic comedy "Something New," opened at No. 7 with $5 million.
With fans staying home Sunday for the big game, theaters were quiet, though key Academy Awards contenders including Focus Features' best-picture front-runner "Brokeback Mountain" benefited from last week's nominations.

Golden Globe-winning films saw significant boosts at the weekend box office, but the action-packed vampire flick "Underworld: Evolution" was the top earner, debuting with $27.6 million in ticket sales.
The blood-drenched thriller, starring Kate Beckinsale and Scott Speedman, edged out last weekend's winning family fare, according to studio estimates released Sunday.
"Hoodwinked," the animated update of the Little Red Riding Hood story, fell to second place with $11 million in ticket sales, while inspirational films "Glory Road" and "Last Holiday" ranked third and fourth, taking in $9.1 million each.
Horror movies and family films "probably have the biggest built-in audience at the box office," said Paul Dergarabedian, president of box-office tracker Exhibitor Relations.
The animated family friendly film "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" and the horror flick "Hostel" also retained spots in the weekend top 10.

'Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire' took in $101.4 million in its weekend debut -- the fourth highest opening gross ever, according to the distributor.
'Spider-Man' still holds the record for the biggest opener ever at $115 million back in 2001.
'Goblet' took in an estimated $36 million on its opening night (Nov. 18) and recorded the biggest opening weekend of any of the 'Potter' films.
The film could mark a turnaround in the slumping movie business, which has seen 2005 revenues decline seven percent from last year.
Movie honchos are banking on big openings in December to turn around a long box office slump, notably Universal's 'King Kong' and Disney's 'The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.'
