Michael Bay sent a scathing email to Paramount Studios before the release of "Transformers 2," complaining in effect that his famous director friends would be shocked at the way Paramount was promoting the flick.
We've obtained an email dated May 4, 2009 -- from Bay to Paramount head Brad Grey, along with a bunch of other Paramount honchos. Bay complains bitterly that Paramount's ad campaign for "Transformers 2" was tepid and ineffective.
"... I have been waiting, and waiting for the anticipation of an 'event movie' to make it into the 'public zeitgeist,'" Bay writes.
Bay calls the print campaign an "abject failure," with a "pathetic presence" in the L.A. Times. He's especially pissed about the profile of the movie on the MTV Video Awards, calling it "so lame."
But here's the best part. Bay name-drops Jerry Bruckheimer, saying Jerry always told him "a studio that does not make [the opening of a movie] an event ... will get bitten in the ass." He then adds, "Besides my good friend Steven [Spielberg], Jerry has made a lot more successful movies then (sic) all of us."
Bay then asks, sarcastically, "Is this is a cash issue with your company?"
In fairness, on June 6, Bay clearly had a change of heart, sending an email to Grey and others at Paramount, praising them for treating him well, adding ..."Paramount is like family. Thank you all for busting your butts and bringing your 'A game' for the release of Transformers."
Bet Steven and Jerry haven't sent such a nice email to their studios!

This story is richer than Paramount Pictures Chairman Brad Grey's ex-wife.

After 25 years of marriage Brad and Jill are officially divorced -- as of May 15. The divorce papers don't say exactly how much Jill got, but judging from her signature -- it's a lot.

In honor of George Clooney joining Brad Pitt as the only two-time Sexiest Man Alive, we've subtitled this week's all-male revue in similar, hyperbolic fashion. And we can't help but also think of Mel Gibson's immortal words back in 1985 upon being crowned the first such honoree: "That implies there are a lot of dead guys who got more points than I did."
O.J. Simpson ("Scariest Man Alive"): Resurrecting a cold case that even his Naked Gun pals could solve, Number #32 has suddenly decided to tackle third and very long with a most unusual play call – the hypothetical confession (or, it all depends what your definition of "if" is). Crusading dad Ron Goldman has already moved to seize any of the Florida author's personal proceeds from the new book; publisher Judith Regan has tried to justify her actions via a strained I-was-a-victim-too plea on The Drudge Report. But there's no getting around it; if Truman Capote were around today, he'd be readying a much better book about O.J., one that could very easily be called In Bold Blood.
Click here... it's not over yet

Christine Vachon, the inimitable indie film producer, has a rule about how to handle "Variety": 'Read the stories backwards to find out what's really going on.'
Her thinking? The real news is buried at the bottom, where it won't hurt the delicate sensibilities and out-sized egos of the executives it covers.

So, what's the second-to-last paragraph of "Daily Variety's" Viacom fallout story?
"Meanwhile, on the Par lot Monday, senior executives were busy working the phones, calling producers, filmmakers and other execs hoping to quash any speculation or uncertainty over implications Freston's departure has for future changes at the studio."
In Vachon's worldview, that ought to have been the lead, and she's probably right: Grey's days are probably numbered at Paramount.
A top New York-based talent agent put it to me this way: "Now is the time to say nice things about Brad Grey in the press, while continuing to do disgusting things behind closed doors. He's been the teflon executive so far, but there've been too many runs to the men's room: He's stalling."
Ironically, the very thing that saved his job thus far - the acquisition of DreamWorks - may be the one that catapults him out of a gig. By most talent agent's estimations, former Universal Pictures chairwoman and current DreamWorks president Stacey Snider is the Grey heir apparent at Paramount.
"You can quickly become fond of that job after being away from it," says one agent, "And she's been away from it long enough."
True, newly appointed CEO Phillipe Dauman tells Daily Variety, "I am very supportive of Brad Grey. I've spent a relatively large amount of time talking to him. We've had great conversations."
But that's in the fifth paragraph of the story - and using Vachon's formula, way too high up to possibly be true.
