Dave Chappelle -- From Hong Kong, No Bong

For a guy who became a living god in stoner culture, it was a little strange to see Dave Chappelle weed out any questions about Mary Jane yesterday at LAX.

Dave Chappelle: Still Paranoid

When Dave Chappelle spotted a couple of photogs waiting for him outside Swingers coffee shop in Los Angeles late last night, he asked if they were spies from Comedy Central. Sorry, Dave, that's the paparazzi.

Intrigued by photog's uncanny ability to sniff out a star from a mile away, the comedian asked, "How do you guys know people are going to be places?" Um, that's what they do for a living.

But what was most puzzling to Chappelle was the lack of demand over paparazzi photos of minority celebs. "How come paparazzi never takes pictures of black celebrities?" he asked. "Our pictures aren't as profitable are they?" Awfully deep conversation for that late at night, isn't it?

Chappelle Said Unhappy With Network Plans

Calls Comedy Central's idea a "bully move"

By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Comedian Dave Chappelle says he may not return to his hit Comedy Central show if the cable network goes through with plans to air new episodes from material he filmed before leaving the series.

"I feel like it's kind of a bully move," Chappelle told the Dayton Daily News in a telephone interview for a story Wednesday. "That's just how I feel about it. I don't know if that's the case. But if people don't watch it, then I'd be more than happy."

In May, Chappelle stunned his fans and the entertainment industry by skipping out on a $50 million contract and leaving "Chappelle's Show" in mid-production. He spent two weeks in South Africa before returning home to his farm near Yellow Springs. He has since resumed performing live standup.

Chappelle said his possible return to "Chappelle's Show" is still up in the air.

"But I think if they air that stuff, I can't see how I'm going to be able to," he told the Daily News. "That will damage our relationship."

Comedy Central has said in the past it plans to air the material, but wouldn't comment on any current specific plans.

"We are still waiting patiently for Dave to return to work, but we know that our viewers are looking forward to seeing the material he produced for the third season," Comedy Central said in a written statement.

Chappelle was scheduled to do a standup show and attend the premiere of his new movie "Dave Chappelle's Block Party" in the Dayton area Wednesday.

Chappelle Says Stress -- Not Insanity -- Caused Him to Walk Away

By ANNA JOHNSON, THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

CHICAGO -- Comedian Dave Chappelle told Oprah Winfrey he was stressed out and not crazy or on drugs when he abruptly left his hit Comedy Central show last spring during production.

In his first television interview since ditching "Chappelle's Show" in May, Chappelle said that after he signed a $50 million deal for the third and fourth seasons in August 2004, too many people were trying to control him and his show.

"I wasn't crazy but it is incredibly stressful," Chappelle, 32, said during his appearance on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" that aired Friday.

"I felt in a lot of instances I was deliberately being put through stress because when you're a guy who generates money people have a vested interested in controlling you," Chappelle said.

Last May, with the premiere date looming for the third season, Chappelle stunned his fans and the entertainment industry by leaving the show in mid-production. He spent two weeks in South Africa before returning home to his farm near Yellow Springs, Ohio, about 75 miles northeast of Cincinnati. Chappelle has since resumed performing live standup.

Why Did Chappelle Quit His Show?

Ever wonder why Dave Chappelle really quit his hit Comedy Central show? One Web site claims to have the answer.

The Web site ChappelleTheory.com poses the notion that a group of powerful African Americans -- think famous talk show hosts and fruity jiggly dessert pitchmen -- conspired to intimidate Chappelle into toning down the content of his show. The site theorizes that this group, referred to as "The Dark Crusaders," felt that Chappelle's racially-themed sketches were "setting race relations back 50 years."

Chappelle eventually did cancel production of the show and headed to South Africa. He talked about being "overwhelmed" and not wanting to "dance and shuffle" for the show to a reporter for Time magazine.

The theory seems to go against traditional thought -- you would think that the alleged conspirators would be more likely to celebrate Chappelle's success than to try and tear him down. This seems more like the kind of thing that someone like Dick Cheney or Karl Rove might be behind -- but maybe they have more important things to worry about...
