A lot is involved in the sex reassignment process. Here's the lowdown, according to Dr. Gary Alter from "Dr. 90210" -- he's an expert. Here's what Chastity Bono is going through right now.
-- First step ... A psychiatrist evaluates the patient. If appropriate, the doctor prescribes male hormones.
-- The hormones change the body makeup, which includes hair growth. The clitoris also grows larger.
-- Removal of breasts. Dr. Alter said most states will recognize the person as a male once this occurs. A hysterectomy can also be performed during this process.
-- Dr. Alter said the decision about changing the genitalia can take several years, while the patient is taking hormones. Dr. Alter says most people stop at this point.
-- Dr. Alter says if the patient goes forward, the surgeon often makes a small penis out of the clitoris and a scrotum by joining both labia majors. Testicle implants can then be inserted. The most sophisticated option is microsurgery in which skin, arteries and nerves are taken from the forearm and made into a phallus.
As for cost, Dr. Alter said it's all over the place, depending on how far the person wants to go. We've spoken to people who have had it done, and they say the full deal costs more than $100,000.

One of the doctors featured on the reality show "
Dr. 90210" is being sued by a former patient who claims some very "personal" body parts were damaged during a procedure at the doc's Laser Vaginal Rejuvenation Institute of Los Angeles.
According to a lawsuit filed today in L.A. County Superior Court,
Dr. David Matlock is being accused of causing
Patricia D'Edgido to suffer "extreme and severe permanent personal injuries" after a 2007 surgery "on her buttocks and other areas of her body, including her arms and vaginal area."
Among the allegations in the lawsuit, Patricia accuses the doc and the institute he founded of "the use of an improper surgical technique, the artless execution of surgical technique, including the manner in which defendants performed such surgery ... failure to perform the correct surgical technique."
Now Patricia is looking to snatch more than $25k for her troubles.
Calls to Dr. Matlock's peeps have not yet been returned.

E! Entertainment and Apple announced today that "The Girls Next Door," "The Soup," "Dr. 90210" and "The Simple Life: 'Til Death Do Us Part" will be available for purchase and download on the iTunes Music Store.
Each show will be available the day after broadcast.
"This new partnership underscores our commitment to our E! Everywhere initiative, making E! content available to viewers on multiple platforms and on demand," said Ted Harbert, president and CEO, E! Entertainment. "We're delighted to pursue this new programming opportunity with iTunes, allowing us to further expand the E! brand and reach even more entertainment fans."
Past season episodes of "The Simple Life," "The Girls Next Door" and "Dr. 90210" are also immediately available for purchase and download.

TMZ has learned that Dr. Robert Rey, one of the stars on 'Dr 90210,' subdued an elderly man who rushed the cabin on an American Airlines jet.
The incident happened today on Flight 427, headed to Los Angeles from Austin. We're told the elderly man, approximately 80 years old, made a run for the cabin and a flight attendant tried to subdue him. Dr. Rey, who is a karate expert, and another passenger swiftly took the man down.
The plane landed in Los Angeles without further incident at 7:28PM PT.
UPDATE 11:55PM ET: We're told the incident occurred as the plane approached for landing in Los Angeles. The elderly man, of Vietnamese decent, apparently become claustrophobic. After the plane landed he was taken by Airport Police to Harbor General Hospital where he was placed on a psychiatric hold.
