Pete Doherty Sentenced to Community Service

By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Pete Doherty, the troubled former boyfriend of Kate Moss, was sentenced to 12 months of community service Wednesday for possessing drugs.

Doherty, 26-year-old front man of the group Babyshambles, had earlier pleaded guilty to the charges.

He spoke only to confirm his name and address, and appeared disoriented during the hearing at Ealing Magistrates' Court in west London, glancing frequently toward supporters in the public gallery. They burst into applause when it became clear Doherty would not be going to jail.

Judge Ann McLaughlin warned Doherty that if he broke the drug rehabilitation requirement of his community service order he would be brought back before the court and might go to jail.

The maximum sentence for possession of Class A drugs such as heroin and cocaine is seven years in prison.

Boy George Court Case Adjourned Until March

By SAMUEL MAULL, ASSOCIATED PRESS WRITER

Boy George appeared briefly in criminal court Wednesday to answer charges related to his October drug possession arrest.

Following a brief meeting at the bench between the pop singer's lawyer, Lewis Freeman, and prosecutor Craig Ortner, Manhattan Criminal Court Judge Anthony Ferrara postponed the case to March 8.

Boy George, whose real name is George O'Dowd, wore a long black wool coat, black slacks, a black shirt and gray sneakers with white stripes, and sported a buzz-cut hairstyle and a large dark blue or black Star of David tattoo on the top of his head.

He said nothing during the court appearance. As he was being hustled out of the courthouse by bodyguards, he answered "yes" when a reporter asked if he still maintained his innocence.

George, 44, was arrested Oct. 7 after he called 911 to report a burglary at his apartment. Police said officers found a small amount of cocaine next to a computer.

He has been free on bail pending a trial after being charged with fourth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, allegedly more than an eighth of an ounce of cocaine.

The singer and his lawyer say the drugs found in his apartment weren't his.

George is famous for his androgynous persona and Culture Club hits, including "Karma Chameleon" and "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me?"

Musician Doherty Arrested on Drug Charges

By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Musician Pete Doherty, the sometime boyfriend of supermodel Kate Moss, has been arrested on suspicion of possessing drugs, days after pleading guilty to similar charges.

Doherty, lead singer with the group Babyshambles, was arrested Saturday while driving through east London, police said.

Officers were trying to flag down another car, but Doherty pulled over. His behavior "caught officers' attention," and the musician was arrested on suspicion of possessing illegal drugs and driving under the influence of drugs.

He was released on bail until a court appearance Feb. 2.

Doherty, whose relationship with Moss made him a tabloid newspaper staple, was arrested Nov. 30 and charged with possession of cocaine and heroin. He pleaded guilty last week and was released on bail.

Moss, 31, lost valuable modeling contracts with H&M, Burberry and Chanel after the Daily Mirror tabloid published pictures in September of her apparently using cocaine in a west London music studio where Doherty, then her boyfriend, was recording.

She later went into a rehabilitation clinic in Arizona and has since resumed her modeling career.
