British Rocker's Molestation Appeal Rejected

Gary Glitter: Click to WatchA confident Gary Glitter entered the People's Supreme Court of Appeals today in Ho Chi Minh City in hopes of getting his three-year prison sentence overturned. The 62-year-old singer had been found guilty by a Vietnamese court in March for committing obscene acts with girls ages 10 and 11.

When asked where he would go if he were released today, Glitter responded he'd "have a beer."

Though Glitter, who's real name is Paul Francis Gadd, maintains his innocence the court said they still have enough evidence to convict him so, sadly for Gary, there are no beers in his near future.

Attorneys for the star say the conviction is "a conspiracy of the media working with the so-called victims to get him...He said he had nothing to do with the accusation of child sex abuse and that he was innocent."

Rocker Gary Glitter Gets 3 Years In Prison

70's star sentenced for molesting two Vietnamese girls

By BY TINI TRAN, THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

(Mar. 3) -- VUNG TAU, Vietnam -- A Vietnamese court on Friday sentenced former British glam rocker Gary Glitter to three years in prison for molesting two Vietnamese girls, with the judge condemning him for "disgusting and sick" behavior.

Glitter, 61, whose real name is Paul Francis Gadd, was found guilty of committing obscene acts with two girls, ages 10 and 11, at his rented seaside villa in southern Vung Tau last year.

The former rock star showed no emotion while the verdict was read but threw the court into disarray by proclaiming his innocence afterward.

"I haven't done anything. I'm innocent. It's a conspiracy by you know who," Glitter shouted, apparently referring to British tabloid newspapers that had tracked down his presence in Vietnam.

Reporters and onlookers, allowed into the courthouse in southern Ba Ria-Vung Tau province to hear the verdict following the closed two-day trial, pressed toward Glitter in a scene of pandemonium as police fended them off and escorted him out of the building.

The judge said Glitter would be deported to Britain after serving his sentence. He was also required to pay compensation of $320 to each girl's family and court fees.

The court, in its verdict, cited graphic testimony from the girls that Glitter had fondled and molested them multiple times in his rented home and in nearby hotels.

"Caring for children is to care for our future ... but Gary Glitter's acts went against this," said Judge Hoang Thanh Tung. "He sexually abused and committed obscene acts with children many times in a disgusting and sick manner."

Glitter, who had faced up to seven years in prison, was given the minimum sentence of three by the court. The judge later explained that among the factors contributing to the lighter sentence was the $2,000 each that Glitter paid to each girl's family as "compensation" in December.

He has 15 days to appeal his sentence. His attorney, Le Thanh Kinh, said Glitter would be eligible for parole in a year, after he serves one-third of his time.

Glitter, a 1970s pop icon in Britain famed for his sequined jumpsuits, platform heels and bouffant wigs, sported a more conservative look for his trial: black clothes and a red bandanna on his head that he removed inside the court.

Glitter, who looked visibly thinner since his arrest, has been held at Phuoc Co prison outside Vung Tau since November 19, when he was caught at the Ho Chi Minh City airport trying to board a flight for Bangkok. Police confiscated his laptop, which had hundreds of pornographic pictures on it.

The former rock star, who hit his musical peak in the 1970s, had hits with "Leader of the Gang" and "Do You Wanna Touch" but is perhaps best known for his crowd-pleasing rock anthem "Rock and Roll (Parts 1&2)," which is still played at sporting events.

He was convicted in Britain in 1999 for possessing child pornography and served half of a four-month jail term. He later went to Cambodia and in 2002 was expelled from that country, but Cambodian officials did not specify any crime or file charges.

Glitter Molestation Trial Opens in Vietnam

British rocker faces three to seven years

By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

(Mar. 2) -- The trial of former British rocker Gary Glitter opened Thursday on charges that he molested two underaged Vietnamese girls at a seaside rental home in southern Vietnam.

The former glam rocker has been accused of kissing, fondling and committing other obscene acts with a 10-year-old and an 11-year-old at his residence in the southern port city of Vung Tau last year. He has denied the allegations.

Glitter, 61, whose real name is Paul Francis Gadd, wore black pants, shirt and cap as police escorted him through a scrum of reporters Thursday morning into the yellow concrete courthouse in Ba Ria-Vung Tau province.

Glitter held up two fingers in a victory sign and said only one word: "Innocent."

The trial is closed to the public but the verdict will be read publicly on Friday. He faces three to seven years in prison if convicted.

The former rocker has said he was teaching the girls English at his home and considered them "like his grandchildren."

Glitter is known for his 1972 hit "Rock and Roll Part 2," which is still played at sporting events.

His fall from grace began with a conviction in Britain in 1999 for possessing child pornography. He served half of a four-month jail term. He later went to Cambodia and in 2002 was expelled from that country, but Cambodian officials did not specify any crime or file charges

Gary Glitter Paid Money to Families of Accusers

By TINI TRAN, THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

HANOI, Vietnam -- Former rock star Gary Glitter paid $4,000 to the families of Vietnamese girls he is accused of sexually abusing in exchange for their cooperation, his lawyer said Wednesday.

Glitter, who won fame as a flamboyant glam rocker in the 1970s, gave $2,000 each to the families of two girls, ages 11 and 12, after they agreed to write letters to the court asking that the case be dropped, said lawyer Le Thanh Kinh.

"If we pay the money for the two families, when this case goes to court, maybe Mr. Gary will receive a lighter penalty," Kinh said.

Glitter, whose real name is Paul Francis Gadd, has been held in prison since Nov. 19 on suspicion of engaging in obscene acts with a child, an offense punishable with up to 12 years in prison. He was seized while trying to board a flight to Bangkok, Thailand, from Ho Chi Minh City.

Police completed their investigation this week and handed over their conclusions to Glitter, 61, and Kinh on Wednesday, said Lt. Col. Nguyen Duc Trinh in a telephone interview. Prosecutors will get the documents within three days.

The families, who were paid two weeks ago, had asked for $10,000 and $5,000 respectively, Kinh said.

"After receiving the money, they informed the investigation bureau that they don't want to go to court and they want to drop the case," he said.

Prosecutors said the money paid would have no bearing on whether the case goes to trial. However, Nguyen Van Xung, deputy provincial chief prosecutor, said the court would consider the $4,000 paid as a form of compensation during the sentencing phase.

"It will not affect the investigation and the trial process, but the court may consider it as one factor to lessen the sentence," Xung said.

Glitter was convicted in Britain in 1999 of possessing child pornography and served half of a four-month jail term.

Vietnam Detains Former U.K. Rocker Glitter

By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

HANOI, Vietnam - Former British rock star Gary Glitter has been taken into custody in a southern Vietnamese resort city following allegations that he indulged in lewd acts with a minor, police officials confirmed Sunday.

Immigration police officer Nguyen Van Phuc said that Glitter was stopped by officers checking his passport as he was preparing to board a flight to Bangkok from Ho Chi Minh city on Saturday.

"One of my colleagues recognized him and detained him at the immigration office," Phuc said.

Glitter, 61, was turned over to the custody of Ba Ria-Vung Tau provincial police, who have taken him back to the coastal resort city, he said.

A police officer in Vung Tau confirmed that Glitter, whose real name is Paul Francis Gadd, had been detained for further investigation, but gave no further details.

Police in the coastal resort town of Vung Tau, where Glitter has been living in a rented house since March, have said he was allegedly involved with two girls under the age of 18 but declined to elaborate.
