Katie Couric has seen a ratings surge on the "CBS Evening News" -- but don't credit her new 'do or her infamous stems.

Katie Couric Grants TMZ Photog Final Wish

Our NYC camera guy spotted Katie Couric while she was on the phone with another TMZ photog: Rory. Seems Rory is smitten with Katie and asked his compadre to tell her he wanted to spend a "lost weekend" with her. But in translation, our NYC dude told Couric it was Rory's "last days." Katie was merciful.

Couric Won't Get Gotten By Gotcha Journalist

After Katie Couric answered a real softball question in NY last night, she and her new 'do staunchly refused to swing at the curveball -- as in, what does she think of Jessica Simpson's curves?

Katie Couric Swats Palin ... with the Economist

When Katie Couric was spotted in NYC and asked to specifically name the magazines she reads, KC was savvy enough to answer the question (The Economist), crack a joke, and shred Sarah Palin -- all at the same time.

Tonight on CBS: Not A-Rod

Barbara Walters must be turning over in her grave ... oh, right. Anywho....

Katie Couric was leaving a building in Manhattan yesterday when Alex Rodriguez spotted her from across the street and waved her over to chat -- and Katie declined the offer.

NY to Katie: Pay Up Lady!

Finally, someone wants to see Katie Couric -- the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance!
Read the doc
According to a document obtained by Webofdeception.com, a tax warrant was issued last year against Katherine Couric, saying she owes a whopping $210.41. We're told in general, tax warrants are issued after numerous attempts to collect are unsuccessful.

It's easy to understand how this could happen -- Katie's salary has been reported to be only $15 mil. We're told Katie doesn't currently live at the address listed on the warrant and her rep declined to comment.

Not Ready for Their Closeup

High-definition television displays everything in stunning detail -- too much detail for some TV personalities.
Katie Couric, Diane Sawyer, Meredith Vieira, Brian Williams
A high-ranking ABC executive told the TV technology website TVPredictions.com that it's common practice for networks to soften their HD image (sometimes by using specially-made HD camera filters) to make their talent look better. "For years, we've softened the image for certain performers," the executive said in an e-mail to Phillip Swann, President and Publisher of TVPredictions.com. "To do so in HD is just a continuation of that."

Readers of TVPredictions.com complained on the site's message boards that shows like "NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams," "Good Morning America" and "Today" don't look as good as most HD programming -- presumably because of covering up the flaws of their hosts. "CBS Evening News with Katie Couric" has yet to go the HD route. Swann has referred to her as "not HD-friendly." Ouch.

TV's Top News Ladies: Will They Sink or Swim?

With Meredith Vieira's debut on "Today" this morning, the game of musical anchor chairs between Vieira, Katie Couric and Rosie O'Donnell is now complete. So we're left to wonder: which of these women will score big in the ratings and which will fall flat on her face?
Meredith Viera, Katie Couric, and Rosie O'Donnell
Couric scored 13 million viewers in her debut as anchor of "The CBS Evening News" and, while her audience declined slightly by week's end, she still led NBC and ABC by three million viewers. But week two has gotten off to a poor start as Katie dropped to third place on Monday with 7.49 million viewers, slightly behind ABC's 7.87 million and NBC's 8.27 million.

Katie anchored Monday's newscast, the fifth anniversary of 9/11, from Ground Zero and seemed to have trouble holding back tears as she closed the telecast.

While rumors of Rosie O'Donnell clashing with her fellow "View" co-hosts have surfaced (who didn't see that coming?), Rosie's debut on the show also equaled ratings gold -- four million people tuned in, a 54% bump over the same day last year.

Sources have told TMZ that Rosie has complained about the show's production and that Elisabeth Hasselbeck has been openly hostile to her. Rosie even butted heads with Barbara Walters before Rosie even debuted -- Walters didn't approve of Rosie's cryptic blog messages she wrote on her site.

Rosie's rep denies rumors of bad blood, saying, "Everyone gets along great."

And finally, it will take a few days to see how Meredith Vieira does in her new locale, but the former "View"-er did show signs of at least being somewhat nervous (who wouldn't be?) as she flubbed a line on her first toss to commercial break.

Katie to CBS Viewers -- How Do I Say Goodbye?

We'll have to settle for just one of two big answers tonight: A knee-length black dress topped by a fitted white jacket. As for the other, you may in fact be the one to decide.

Katie Couric made her long-gestating and heavily-hyped debut on "The CBS Evening News," and she began by quickly answering the question about her wardrobe and wrapped up by avoiding the question about what her signature sign-off would be, asking viewers to make suggestions. The opening featured a voiceover by Couric's predecessor, Walter Cronkite.

As for the rest of the broadcast, CBS correspondent Lara Logan and Hulk Hogan both figured prominently, as did Suri Cruise. But producers clearly meant to convey the seriousness of their journalistic intention by delving into a multi-segment story about the Taliban (where Logan went into a Taliban camp) and the War on Terror, which included a sit-down interview with New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman. In fact, while CBS' lead story was nearly ten minutes long, ABC's "World News" was cycling through several of the day's top stories, including the Ford Motor Company CEO's resignation and a piece about oil prices.

On the lighter side, Couric Day One also showed us the first photos of Suri Cruise in Vanity Fair magazine and included an op-ed-style commentary by filmmaker Morgan Spurlock which invoked wrestler Hulk Hogan in an orthographically confusing segment titled freeSpeech. (Rush Limbaugh will be the mouthpiece on Thursday.) And Couric deferred her decision on a signature sign-off, putting the ball squarely in her audience's court. For tonight, she went with, "I'm Katie Couric, thank you so much for watching, and I hope to see you tomorrow night."

We'd like you to give you the chance to help Katie decide, so take a stab at our suggestions.

Schieffer's Teary Goodbye

Click to return to TMZ.comWith tears welling up in his eyes, Bob Schieffer finally concluded his 18-month tenure as anchor of the CBS Evening News with an emotional in-studio tribute.

Incoming anchor Katie Couric joined Schieffer at the end of Thursday night's broadcast in studio for a retrospective of his career, featuring a one-on-one pre-taped interview with the former Today Show host herself (perhaps to give viewers a sneak peek of the Katie to come?).

CBS -- "Don't You Dare Call Katie a Star"

Katie CouricKatie Couric is about to make her grand debut and history all at the same time. It will be one of the great tightrope acts in ages.

Katie is a star. She got there because of the magic news blend -- smarts, personality and being comfortable in her own skin. But Katie's star quality makes her new job a bit problematic. She has become a bigger celebrity than most of the celebs she interviews. On "Today," Katie's star qualities were never a problem. It was a morning show which went in and out of real news, and Katie navigated the waters with ease. Unless she was interviewing a Brad Pitt type, the two-shot was way more important than the close-up of the star -- how is Katie reacting, is she crossing her legs, will she go for the one-liner? It all worked.

Now Katie is in different territory. It seems CBS is somewhat worried, if not embarrassed, by the perception of Katie as a celebrity. Hence the new promos in which Katie says CBS has the best reporters and that's what makes a newscast. Interesting, because they've had the same reporters for a while, but clearly CBS doesn't think the reporters will spike the ratings, and that's why they're paying Couric a queen's ransom. So it seems CBS wants Katie to blend but, then again, not really.

Katie is the reason people will tune in on September 5. CBS is banking on getting repeat viewers on September 6. It's going to be a tough road to hoe. The CBS News sweet spot -- at least the people drawn to the broadcast in the past -- has been older males, especially from the South. That's hardly the demo Katie brings to CBS. Will she lose the viewers who aren't much into celebrity journalists? Will she attract viewers who are into watching a star do her thing?

Here's my prediction; Katie will do fine until that next big event that requires an anchor to sit without a bathroom break for hours, comforting and informing America. That's where Katie shines, matched by none. And that's the kind of event that cements loyalty and viewing habits. In short, over the long haul, my money's on Katie.

Katie Ready to Hit the Ground Running

Katie CouricSeptember 5 is getting closer and closer and no one is looking forward to Katie Couric taking the helm of the CBS Evening News more than Katie herself.

Katie has spent her summer traveling the country to raise money for cancer awareness and meeting future CBS news fans face-to-face. "I think face-to-face conversations with people and really getting a sense of where they are and their likes and dislikes, their frustrations, is invaluable."

And while Katie's first day will be eventful, her second day on the job will be even more exciting. CBS News announced Monday that Katie is set to talk with President Bush at the White House for her first CBS News primetime special, "Five Years Later-How Safe Are We?," airing September 6 at 10PM ET/PT, capping off a day of 9/11 fifth-anniversary programming.

As for her other plans for the show, Katie says, "Maybe doing more headlines and fewer 1:30 pieces, so we can dig a little deeper into the story of the day and answer questions that viewers might have."

"CBS Evening News With Katie Couric" debuts September 5 at 6:30PM ET/PT.

Rosie & Katie & Meredith ... Oh My!

Katie Couric, Meredith Viera, Rosie O'Donnell
Katie Couric, Rosie O'Donnell, and Meredith Vieira are all taking on high-profile new jobs this fall. So which of these leading ladies' debuts is America anticipating the most this fall? TMZ got the figures from Ask.com.

According to the search engine's stats, after Katie announced she would be taking the helm at the "CBS Evening News," searches for her name went up 23 percent. By comparison, when Meredith Vieira was tapped to take the seat next to Matt Lauer on "Today," her searches went up 63 percent.

But the media maven who takes the search engine cake is Rosie O'Donnell. When it was announced that Rosie would be joining the girls at "The View" and afterwards, during the Star Jones I'm-leaving-no-you-were-fired debacle, Rosie's searches skyrocketed a whopping 519 percent. That's huge, considering the impact Meredith and Katie are expected to have in their respective news outlets, and given the comparative size of "Today" and "Evening News."

Personally, we can't wait for September 5 when Rosie serves up juice and cookies at her first day on the job.
