Former legendary L.A. Laker Elgin Baylor has just filed a lawsuit against the L.A. Clippers and the NBA, claiming he's the victim of rampant racial discrimination.
In the lawsuit, filed today in L.A. County Superior Court, Baylor -- who was unceremoniously dismissed as VP and General Manager last October -- claims the team has "egregious salary disparities" based on race. Baylor claims he was told to "induce African American players to join the Clippers, despite the Clippers' reputation of being unwilling to fairly treat and compensate African American players." Baylor says the owner, Donald Sterling, has a "pervasive and ongoing racist attitude."
Baylor cites the case of NBA player Danny Manning, where Sterling allegedly said, "I'm offering a lot of money for a poor Black kid." The suit claims Sterling repeatedly referred to the team as "poor Black kids" and "he wanted a White coach directing the Clippers." Sterling is being sued as well.
Baylor says he personally got stiffed, only being paid $350,000 a year since 2003, when a "Caucasian head coach was given a 4 year, 22 million dollar contract."
Here's the best part. The suit says, "At all relevant times mentioned here, Mr. Baylor was an African American male over the age of 40."
The Lakers couldn't win the title without injured center Andrew Bynum, so just the sight of him walking around last night in Hollywood is music to their ears.
While Bynum claimed to be 100%, watch the video closely -- was he grasping for his keys or checking on his bum knees?
We finally caught up with Kobe Bryant in NYC this afternoon, his first public appearance in the city where Shaquille O'Neal publicly invited him to sample his backside.
It's official -- Laker fans are too damn violent for their own good.
TMZ has learned Lake Show bigwigs are afraid of another hometown fan fight night, like the one that broke out during game two, so they've pulled the plug on broadcasting game six at Staples Center. Sources close to the team tell TMZ, "It gets too rowdy ... and there was one incident in particular that put it over the edge."
A rep for the team says the decision was made because too many police were required around the arena.
Lakers forward Ronny Turiaf wasn't happy to see us this weekend -- considering last time we saw him, he was getting denied from Villa.
So when we caught up with him at FD Motoring, he thought it was best to turn the camera on us instead. Better to ask the invasive questions than answer them.
Lamar Odom and the Lakers extended the NBA Finals with a win last night -- reason to celebrate, right?
But considering L.O. didn't arrive at the club until just past midnight, and he's got an early morning cross-country flight today before tomorrow's deciding game six, maybe he should have just called it an early night.
A website that posted a story claiming Kobe Bryant had an affair with a Laker Girl has refused to back down. As we first reported, Bryant's lawyer fired off a letter to TheDirty.com, demanding that the post be taken down. Dirty claimed Kobe had an affair with 18-year-old Vanessa Curry, who has resigned her position as a Laker Girl. Now Dirty's lawyer has fired back, claiming the story is true. But get this -- the lawyer says even if it isn't true, "because Mr. Bryant has previously publicly admitted to similar acts of infidelity ... it seems unlikely that any jury would find 'actual malice.'"
And here's the best part: Dirty's lawyer says the fact that Kobe's lawyer sent a demand letter "only increases the likelihood that this story will receive more attention than it already has." Dirty's lawyer then makes reference to "The Streisand effect" -- that's when Babs made a stink over photos of her beach pad taken from a helicopter and it just made everyone aware of where she lived.
TMZ has obtained a cease and desist letter that Kobe Bryant's attorney fired off to the owners of a website that accused the NBA star of having an affair with a Lakers cheerleader. Is it too late to bet on the Spurs? TheDirty.com (aka the site that ran those Matt Leinart pics) published a post last week claiming it had info linking Bryant to one of the Laker Girls, who has since resigned. The girl has left the team, we're told, to pursue a "hosting" career. All references to her on the team's official site have vanished.
The letter demands the site remove Kobe's "name, image, and likeness, and any information that relates in any way to him" -- but thus far, it's still there. TheDirty tells us, "TheDirty.com strictly adheres to all laws when posting stories and/or images."
BTW -- Kobe's lawyer is none other than Adam Streisand. He's Barbra's cousin, and he tried -- and failed -- to inject himself into Britney Spears' conservatorship case earlier this year.
Actor Louis Gossett, Jr. is being slammed for allegedly not paying for a pair of $37,000 Lakers tickets, and now the brass behind the basketball team is crying foul.
In a lawsuit filed recently in Los Angeles Superior Court, the former "Iron Eagle" is accused of signing a 2003 contract for a pair of exclusive Premier Seats at Staples Center -- home to the Los Angeles Lakers, Clippers and the NHL's L.A. Kings -- but never forking over the dough. The tickets, located close to the floor, are good for nearly any sporting event at the arena -- for two years!
Now, L.A. Arena Funding, the company that handles ticket sales for Staples Center events, is asking for $38,850 in damages. To put things in perspective -- that's less than 1% of what Kobe Bryant made this year (endorsements not included).
Britney Spears did her best to disguise herself at last night's Lakers game at Staples Center, but her costume revealed more than it hid. TMZ spies spotted Brit in a giant Kobe Bryant jersey, a blonde wig and a pair of sunglasses usually reserved for distribtion by ophthalmologists to cataract patients.
Then, of course, there was the giveaway 400-lb. bodyguard sitting next to her. This is definitely a way to stay incognito.
Kobe Bryant was sued in Federal Court today by a fan who claims he was deliberately elbowed by the NBA star during a Lakers game at FedEx Forum in Memphis last year -- and now the fan wants $75,000 in damages for unspecified injuries!
According to court documents, Bill Geeslin claims that during a game against the Memphis Grizzlies on November 14 of last year, Bryant came off the court during play, landed on him, and that Bryant "committed assault and battery and engaged in extreme and outrageous conduct when [Bryant], without provocation, violently struck Mr. Geeslin with [his] elbow, causing Mr. Geeslin injury and damages." So much for sitting courtside.
Bryant was famously accused of sexual assault back in 2003. While all criminal charges were later dropped, he settled out of court for a reported sum of $5 million.
Calls to Lakers representatives were not immediately returned.
The Los Angeles Lakers hosted the 3rd Annual Mirage Las Vegas Casino Night Bodog Celebrity Poker Invitational benefiting the Los Angeles Lakers Youth Foundation. The event brought out Lakers superstar Kobe Bryant (with his very pregnant wife Vanessa), as well celebrity poker fans Paris Hilton, Josh Duhamel and Shannon Elizabeth.
