It's a battle between some peppers and a sizzling hip shaker for the most MTV Video Music Awards nominations.
Shakira and the Red Hot Chili Peppers lead the pack with a total of seven noms each. Madonna and Vegas rockers Panic! at the Disco each have five nominations and Christina Aguilera picked up four.
This year's winners will be determined a little differently from past shows. For the first time in VMA history, viewers can vote for their favorites in every category -- rather than just the viewer's choice.
The VMAs will air live from New York's Radio City Music Hall on August 31. Artists and groups already confirmed to perform include Justin Timberlake, Beyonce, T.I., Ludacris, The Killers and Panic! at the Disco.
Cameras caught up with Justin, Beyonce and T.I. as they each spoke about what it's like to perform at the VMAs.

It turns out that the somewhat sunny announcement last month that Panic! At the Disco was parting ways with its bassist Brent Wilson was a bit of a cover for some bitter feelings. The former bassist lashed out at his former bandmates saying his "parting of ways" came as a complete surprise with no notice.

Gigwise reports that Panic drummer Spencer Smith fired right back at Wilson:
"We made the decision based on Brent's lack of responsibility and the fact that he wasn't progressing musically with the band. Brent did not write any of his bass parts on the record. Brent did not record one note of bass on the record."
Smith reportedly went on to trash Brent's playing abilities too: "Brendon and Ryan wrote all of the bass parts and Brendon recorded all of the bass parts. We had to simplify some of the bass parts that were recorded because Brent could not play them live." Ouch - that's gotta hurt.
PATD is in the middle of a mostly sold out US tour with their friend "Jon" filling in on bass for the departed Wilson. Jon better be sure to get those parts down quick!
