Sanjaya is trying to gouge poor, unsuspecting country fair folk.
The scene of the crime: The Richmond County Fair. They asked the hair-brained reject to sing. He demanded $8,000.
We're told at the same fair last year, Kimberly Caldwell and Paris Bennett raked in less than $5,000 -- and that's for the package.
So how do we know this? Fair officials called TMZ to ask if eight grand for Sanjaya was fair. We declined to comment on the phone.
Eight - grand is insane!

Paris Bennett votes for Sanjaya Malakar -- and she hopes it'll take down "American Idol."
Last season's petite powerhouse phoned into the "Tone E Fly Morning Show" in Minneapolis today, and called "Idol" "a joke," and said she and a few other contestants are using the Web site VotefortheWorst.com to screw with the results.
"We want to see him [Sanjaya] win because it'll kind of prove that 'American Idol' is kind of losing its taste," says Bennett, "it kinda isn't going for talent anymore and more for popularity."
At least she isn't bitter.

'Idol' contestants Chris Daughtry and Paris Bennett helped console their friend, Ace Young, after Ace was voted off of 'Idol' last night. A TMZ camera exclusively captured the 'Idol' hunks and Bennett at the The Whisper Lounge in Los Angeles after the results show.
