Richards to Sail with "Pirates"

Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards confirmed Monday what everybody already knew: He will join Johnny Depp in the next "Pirates of the Caribbean" film.

"As far as I know I believe I'm doing a week or so in September. That's the story that's what I'm told by the newspapers, that's what Johnny says so yeah...It suddenly answered the question as to why he [Depp] paid for all those dinners." Richards will play the father to Captain Jack Sparrow in the third film, "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End."

Mick Jagger: The Stones Will Roll On

In the past few months the Rolling Stones have had a few "setbacks" to their ongoing world tour. First, while in Fiji in April of this year, guitarist Keith Richards reportedly fell out of a palm tree requiring some serious medical attention and the Stones had to restructure parts of their tour. Stories differed on how serious the injuries were at the time, but Richards is said to be on the road to recovery and will be ready to play again in July.

Now that Richards is on the mend, the latest Stone to take a tumble is Ronnie Wood. People Magazine reports that Wood entered rehab in London for alcohol treatment. A publicist for the Stones says Wood, now 59, "needs some rest, but he will definitely be fit for the first night of the European tour."

The European leg of their "Bigger Bang Tour" is set to kick off July 11th in Milan.  Will Wood be out of the proverbial woods by then? In between watching World Cup matches Mick Jagger reassured fans that the shows will go on: "Keith is doing great, and so's Ronnie. We'll still be doing the tour, don't worry."

Both Bon Jovi and the Rolling Stones played to packed stadiums overseas this weekend.

After six months on the road, Bon Jovi's world tour hit Japan where they are due to play six sold-out dates.

Also, the Rolling Stones opened their first ever concert in mainland China on Saturday where the veteran rockers played to a full house at Shanghai's 8,000-seat indoor stadium.

Rolling Stones to Hold Concert in China

By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

The Rolling Stones will hold their first-ever concert in China in April, Chinese promoters said Tuesday, three years after canceling a pair of shows on the mainland because of the SARS outbreak.

The rock greats will play Shanghai's Grand Stage, an 8,000-seat converted indoor stadium, on April 8, according to an announcement from Emma Entertainment.

"The Rolling Stones first-ever concert in China, do not miss it," the Beijing-based company said on its Web site. Tickets range from $38-$375, the site said.

The Stones had been slated to play Shanghai and Beijing in 2003, but the shows were canceled amid the outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome.

Brazil Prepares for Rolling Stones Show

By MICHAEL ASTOR, ASSOCIATED PRESS WRITER -- The Rolling Stones promised a bigger bang, and they'll get one in Rio.

City officials said Monday they expect nearly 2 million people to turn out for the Stones'"A Bigger Bang" free concert on Copacabana beach Saturday.

"This is the biggest live show that has ever occurred in the world," said municipal Health Secretary Flavio Tanure at a news conference announcing the city's preparations.

Tanure was probably exaggerating a bit: The Guinness World Records Web site credits the largest live concert to Rod Stewart, who reportedly drew 3.5 million for a New Year's Eve 1994 performance - also at Copacabana Beach.

Millions of people flock to the famous 2.5-mile beach each year for Rio's New Year's Eve celebration, which features a fireworks show and bands playing on several stages.

Crowds are expected to fill full half of the beach Saturday, with the Stones performing on a single stage. Eight video screens and 16 sound towers will allow fans far from the stage a glimpse of the sexagenarian rockers.

Security is a concern. Earlier this month, three people were crushed to death and 38 injured in Sao Paulo, Brazil, when thousands of fans surged through security barriers at an autograph session for the Mexican band RBD.

But authorities said they weren't worried about a repeat at the Stones' concert.

"It's similar to New Year's, and we have significant experience with live shows on the beach," said Tanure.

Ana Maria Maia, Rio's subsecretary of special events, said the city would deploy 10,000 police officers - about three times the usual contingent for New Year's - as well as 600 firefighters, civil defense workers and lifeguards.

The show marks the Stones' third visit to Brazil, but the first for free in a country where few can afford tickets to see top international acts.

Fans across Brazil were chartering vans and buses to get to Rio, and Mayor Cesar Maia said tourists from as far away as Chile were coming for the concert.

Fans Start to Gather for Free Stones Show

By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Screams and cheers greeted the Rolling Stones as they pulled up to their beach-front hotel Friday in a huge police motorcade, and die-hard fans were already staking out spots before an enormous stage on Copacabana Beach, where up to 2 million people were expected to attend the band's free concert Saturday night.

"We've been camped out here since 5:00 a.m. Thursday and we're only leaving to take baths in the ocean," said Rodrigo Barduco, a 23-year-old student from Sao Paulo.

A week before Carnival festivities hit full-swing, the concert was already drawing tourists and Brazilians to Rio de Janeiro which knows a thing or two about hosting massive parties.

Millions of people flock to Copacabana Beach each year for the city's New Years' Eve celebration, which features fireworks, tributes to Afro-Brazilian spirit deities and bands on several stages. In 1994, 3.5 million people hit the beach to see Rod Stewart in what The Guinness World Records Web site describes as history's largest live concert.

Stones: Super Bowl Censorship Was %u2018Absolutely Ridiculous%u2019

By DAVID BAUDER, AP ENTERTAINMENT WRITER

Nobody turns off the microphone on Mick Jagger without a fight.

Censorship of their songs during the Super Bowl halftime show was "absolutely ridiculous and completely unnecessary," the Rolling Stones said through a spokeswoman on Tuesday.

The NFL, which produced the show seen on ABC Sunday night, silenced Jagger's microphone during sexually suggestive passages of two of the three songs the band performed before an audience of 90 million television viewers.

The football league, still nervous over the Janet Jackson wardrobe malfunction two years ago at the Super Bowl, has said it wanted to ensure family entertainment at the game.

"The band was aware of our plan to simply lower Mick's mike at the appropriate moments," said Brian McCarthy, NFL spokesman. "It was discussed with the group last week prior to the Super Bowl."

He declined further comment on the Stones' statement.

NFL Edits Out Explicit Stones Lyrics

By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

They may not have flashed any body parts except for Mick Jagger's well-toned stomach but the Rolling Stones made ABC glad editors were on duty for the Super Bowl halftime show.

Two sexually explicit lyrics were excised from the rock legends' performance Sunday. The only song to avoid the editor was "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction," a 41-year-old song about sexual frustration.

In "Start Me Up," the show's editors silenced one word, a reference to a woman's sexual sway over a dead man. The lyrics for "Rough Justice" included a synonym for rooster that the network also deemed worth cutting out.

ABC was the first network to impose a five-second tape delay on the Super Bowl, although it said the changes to the Stones' show were made by the NFL and its producers. The sensitivity no doubt reflects a lingering reaction to Janet Jackson's infamous wardrobe malfunction two years ago.

The Stones probably didn't mind, either. It brought a little rock 'n' roll danger to the ultimate "safe" gig and if they're lucky it distracted attention from their mediocre show.
