Eva Defuses the 'Da Vinci' Bomb

What does it say about 'The Da Vinci Code' when the best thing about the movie is supermodel Eva Herzigova's dress at the premiere?

It says that one of the most-anticipated flicks of the year is a bomb. Critics who have seen the movie at screenings in recent days have been brutal. "You know a movie's a dud when even its self-flagellating albino killer monk isn't any fun," wrote the critic for the Commercial Appeal in Memphis. "Duller than watching Da Vinci's paint dry," wrote another critic online.

All this is why Herzigova's gold dress, slit to the waist with a cut-out at the hip, is such a salvation.

'Da Vinci Code' Author Accused in London

By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

"The Da Vinci Code" author Dan Brown defended himself Monday in Britain's High Court against accusations he took material for his blockbuster conspiracy thriller from a 1982 book about the Holy Grail.

Michael Baigent and Richard Leigh, authors of "Holy Blood and Holy Grail," filed a breach of copyright lawsuit against Brown, claiming he appropriated their ideas and themes.

Both books hinge on the theory that Jesus married Mary Magdalene and they had a child, and their blood line survives to this day.

Baigent and Leigh are suing Random House, which also published their book. Random House denies their claim.

'Da Vinci Code' to Open Cannes

(AP) -- Case cracked: "The Da Vinci Code" will be the opening-night movie at the Cannes Film Festival in May, organizers said.

Based on Dan Brown's esoteric thriller about code-breaking and conspiracy, the film will debut at the Riviera festival and in French theaters on May 17, the festival said Saturday. The rest of the world will have to wait two days, until May 19.

The adaptation by Oscar-winning director Ron Howard ("A Beautiful Mind") has an international cast led by Tom Hanks and Audrey Tautou.

Like the novel, the movie is set largely in France: The story line opens with the murder of the curator of the Louvre Museum in Paris.

Early this month, the Louvre said the movie's producers were trying to decide between the museum and the Cannes festival as a site for the European premiere. The movie will not be in the running for prizes at Cannes.

Hong Kong's Wong Kar-wai, director of "In the Mood for Love," presides over this year's jury at the festival, which runs May 17-28. Organizers at the glitzy festival try to strike a balance between crowd-pleasers and critically acclaimed films, and between Hollywood blockbusters and art house flicks.
