Anna Nicole Smith's mother, Virgie Arthur, and lawyer/wanna-be-baby-daddy Howard K. Stern were both in a Nassau, Bahamas courtroom this morning for the beginning of an inquest into the death of the the late celebuwreck's only son.

The proceedings were postponed in October, when a tropical storm slammed into the Caribbean island where Daniel Smith, 20, mysteriously died 13 months earlier in his mother's hospital room, three days after his sister Dannielynn was born.

Last night, TMZ cameras caught a shapely, primped-out platinum blonde in a snug black dress, flanked by tall men in dark suits and whisked away by a mega-SUV with tinted windows and big chrome rims.
Paris? No. Hayden? Nope. It's Gummi Bear Virgie!

Virgie Arthur doesn't care if the public isn't on her side regarding her attempts to gain custody of her granddaughter, Dannielynn Birkhead.
Anna Nicole Smith's mother tells "Inside Edition," "I don't have to have the public ... to do what I think is right." Unfortunately for Virgie Virge, the courts weren't on her side either -- and awarded Larry Birkhead sole custody of baby Dannielynn.
But Virgie says being perceived as the bad guy isn't easy, and admits that "Yes, it does hurt."

Larry Birkhead just emerged from a custody hearing in the Bahamas with a big smile on his face and said, "I gotta call my travel agent," suggesting that he was getting very close to taking daughter Dannielynn home.
Minutes later, Howard K. Stern emerged from the courtroom and slammed Virgie Arthur for holding up the custody process, saying that she "proved herself to be what Anna Nicole always told me."
The three parties were in the same room this morning -- perhaps for the very last time -- to determine custody. Virgie Arthur is seeking guaranteed visitation of Dannielynn and wants to be her guardian in the event of Larry's death. While he didn't go into specifics, Birkhead was visibly pleased with what transpired in the courtroom, but left some room open, saying he didn't know whether he'd need "one seat or two."
Virgie slipped away without a word.

We know that Larry Birkhead is Dannielynn's biological dad, but does that mean he'll get to take her home to L.A.? A hearing is scheduled for 2:30 PM EDT in the Bahamas, to determine who will get custody of the little girl -- we're an hour away from the start of the hearing.
Howard K. Stern has already told Birkhead he won't fight for custody now that Birkhead's been named as the father, but one wild card remains in the large form of Virgie Arthur.
Anna Nicole's mom has stated that she wants to be more than just the child's grandma.
TMZ will have all the custody-day action as it happens!

And now there were three: Virgie Arthur has arrived to court in the Bahamas to find out who the father of her granddaughter is, and court proceedings are underway. Arthur, as TMZ reported, is likely to ask for custody of the baby, even if Larry Birkhead is the dad.
Arthur, as is her custom, was the last of the three major parties in the Anna Nicole saga to arrive, and was wearing a white dress and was accompanied by her husband and another unidentified man.
The revelation of the baby daddy is imminent.

TMZ has confirmed that lawyers for Anna Nicole Smith's mother, Virgie Arthur, have filed a petition in a Bahamas court, essentially trying to stop the funeral before Anna's body is buried.
Currently, the hearse carrying Anna's body has come to a stop, just yards from the church where the funeral is set to take place.

Howard K. Stern and Anna Nicole Smith's mother, Virgie Arthur, are back in Florida today, where an appeals court is considering a request by Arthur to bury Anna in Texas.
Last week, the offbeat Judge Seidlin decided that the court-appointed guardian for Smith's daughter would make the decision as to where Smith's body would be buried. The guardian said she'd be buried next to her son Daniel in the Bahamas.
Both sides will be given 20 minutes each to present their arguments this morning, Anna's potential baby-daddy Larry Birkhead will not be present at the hearing.

Virgie Arthur, Anna Nicole Smith's mother, visited her granddaughter last night in the Bahamas for the first time, and TMZ has obtained an exclusive photo of Grandma Virgie after the encounter.

Sources tell TMZ that Arthur arrived at Horizons, the Nassau house where Howard K. Stern is looking after the child, around 8 PM last night, and left about 50 minutes later. We're told she looked and acted "distraught" upon leaving, and was accompanied by a bodyguard and a driver, as well as a brunette woman described as a "relative."
Just a couple days ago, Larry Birkhead, who claims to be the father of Dannielynn, met the baby for the first time, also at Horizons. Lawyers for the parties will be in court in Florida this morning to present arguments concerning the future disposition of Anna NIcole's body.

T
he judge who ruled on who gets control of Anna Nicole Smith's body wants the starlet buried, and will not let her mom stand in his way.
The appeal filed by Smith's mother, Virgie Arthur, just moments after Seidlin's teary decision to release Anna's body to Dannielynn's court-appointed guardian Thursday, was rejected early Monday morning. In the court papers obtained by TMZ, Seidlin claims that a stay would increase the "potential for adverse consequences," adding that "Arthur seeks an indefinite stay and has shown no intent to expedite the proceedings."

The paparazzi agency that Howard K. Stern's lawyers believe paid Anna Nicole Smith's mother, Virgie Arthur, more than $12,000 for pictures and video footage, won't confirm that a transaction took place, but they ain't exactly denyin' it.
In a statement to TMZ, the agency said, "Splash News and Picture Agency, in the great tradition of journalism, protects its sources and all financial matters are kept confidential. Splash has a reputation for breaking major news stories, and TV stations, newspapers and magazines around the globe license images and video footage to illustrate those stories."
Earlier today, Arthur was testifyin' that she ain't never had no deal with Splash.

Sure, we could do our usual thing and tag people like Cameron Diaz and Justin Timberlake for trying to outdo each other post breakup (Diaz, with her my-new-boyfriend-is-like-this-breadstick demo during a dinner at Cut in Beverly Hills, would likely win). But in the wake of Anna Nicole Smith's untimely death, it seems only fitting to invoke the exception rule, and take serious stock of those she left behind.
Dannielynn Hope Marshall: This young tyke is only five months old, but already she has lost a half brother and her mother. According to People Magazine, Dannielynn is being cared for in the Bahamas by the mother of Immigration Minister Shane Gibson, in advance of what will no doubt be an extremely ugly custody battle. Her mom idolized Marilyn Monroe, the blonde bombshell with whom Smith was often compared. But now it is Dannielynn who must suddenly follow in the footsteps of Norma Jean and other real-life celebrity orphans, such as Deborah Harry and Dana Plato.

The mother of the late Anna Nicole Smith predicted that the fight over her granddaughter Dannielynn would get "ugly," and dismissed Anna Nicole's rags-to-riches self-portrayal as mere myth-making.
In an interview on "Good Morning America," a disconsolate, almost disgusted Virgie Arthur described Anna Nicole as "wild and crazy," and reiterated that she'd warned her daughter to stop using drugs. She added that she "really sincerely" worries about five-month-old Dannielynn, and wants her to be with her father -- whoever that might be. When asked about the pending paternity battle, Arthur agreed that it would get ugly.
Curiously, Arthur also took the opportunity to debunk the myth that Anna Nicole's rise to fame was a classic rags-to-riches tale. "Why do you tell people stuff like that?" Arthur said she asked Anna Nicole. "I'll do whatever it takes," replied Anna Nicole. "If my name's out there, I make money."

Anna Nicole Smith's mother, Virgie Arthur, made a very public plea to her daughter back in November -- urging Anna to start a new life away from drugs.
On a November episode of "The Dr. Keith Ablow Show" Arthur said, "Vickie Lynn, please, you have a family baby ... we're still here for you. You don't have to have drugs, you've got a beautiful baby girl now. You need to start life over, you need to be a great mom and live life now."
Though the cause of Anna's death is as yet unknown, her mother told Ablow she was always concerned about her daughter's drug habits, "I'm disappointed that she got mixed up in drugs and the wrong people ... she lives on drugs now," and added she did not believe Howard K. Stern was the father of Smith's child, Dannielynn.
Virgie also made a chilling prophecy in October on Nancy Grace's CNN show; "If Howard Stern marries her and she ends up dead, then who does the money go [to]? Danny's not there."
