The guy who directed "The Notebook" is finally experiencing the kind of sadness that he made us endure -- the kind of sadness that only a couple million dollars could cure.
Nick Cassavetes -- who's also a prominent movie writer -- has just filed a lawsuit against New Line Cinema claiming they baited him into a big-time project only to drop him right before it was set to go into production.
Cassavetes claims he was originally supposed to "supervise the script" for a movie originally titled "Elephant Orphanage" -- which was later changed to "Peaceable Kingdom." Nick says he agreed to take $275,000 for the job -- along with a promise that he'd get "several million dollars" to later direct the film.
But Nick says the simple "supervision" turned into a complete rewrite -- a service he usually charges $750,000 to do.
In the lawsuit, Cassavetes claims when he finished the script, New Line dropped him as a director ... and then refused to pay him a single penny.
Now, Nick wants $1,050,000 for services he already performed -- plus the "several million dollars" New Line originally promised him for directing.
See, Hollywood really is like "Entourage."

The Justin Timberlake movie "Alpha Dog" finally has an ending ... the guy it was based on was just convicted of the kidnap and murder of the kid who died in the movie.

Today a jury decided Jesse James Hollywood was the mastermind behind 15-year-old Nicholas Markowitz's death, which happened in West Hills, CA back in August of 2000. He was convicted of first-degree murder and kidnapping.
Hollywood could get the death penalty.

The prosecutor who shared confidential court docs and police records with the director of "Alpha Dog" -- that halfway-decent movie with Justin Timberlake -- will be allowed to continue working on the real-life murder trial on which the film was based.

The California Supreme Court ruled on Monday that the actions of Ron Zonen, the Santa Barbara County Deputy District Attorney, did not warrant removal -- even though Jesse James Hollywood's lawyer claimed "Alpha Dog" unfairly tainted his client for potential jurors.

If 2005 hits were any indication, it appears that people will just embrace something familiar if they think it's quality entertainment. Cases in point: The latest installments of the 'Star Wars' and 'Harry Potter' movies became the year's top blockbusters; returning hitmakers 50 Cent and Mariah Carey delivered smash albums; and 'CSI,' 'American Idol' and 'Desperate Housewives' continued to dominate the TV landscape.
