Today's Z-lister may well be tomorrow's gold standard. Just ask Mel Gibson and Kate Moss, who were honored this week, respectively, by the Latin Business Association and British Fashion Awards.
Prince: What's next? The Mirage poaching another famous Jehovah's Witness to resurrect its one-time marquee attraction as "Siegfried and Michael"? At the very least, Prince may need to adopt "???" as his new symbol. The idea that the diminutive 48-year-old pop star will, starting next weekend, be headlining as a Friday-Saturday Vegas regular at the all-suites Rio Hotel and Casino is about as logical as Marilyn Manson happily taking part in an episode of Trading Spaces. And if you're planning on shouting out a request for "Dirty Mind" classics like "Sister" (about incest) or "Head" (about... you know), save your money for the "When Doves Cry" slots.

Microsoft Corp. Chairman Bill Gates and talk show host Oprah Winfrey visited a high school on Wednesday, surprising some of its students.
Gates and his wife, Melinda, spent about three hours at San Diego High School and met with nine students for an upcoming segment of "The Oprah Winfrey Show" about the billionaire's school reform efforts.
Wednesday's visit was not publicly announced and reporters were not allowed on campus. Mark Toney, 42, said his 16-year-old daughter, Daejha, called him about the visitors.
"She said 'Dad, you're not going to believe it. Oprah is here. I waved at her and she waved back at me,'" Toney said.
The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation gave $11 million to the San Diego Unified School District in 2003 to reform three large high schools, said Music McCall, a spokeswoman for the district.
The district used some money to divide San Diego High School into six smaller schools specializing in business, international studies, media, and science, among others, McCall said.
"Instead of being at a big high school with 1,400 students, you're at a school with 400 students where people know you better," McCall said. "They learn more and get more out of school."
The goal of the program was to increase the number of college-ready San Diego high school graduates, particularly among low-income and minority students.

When Bill Gates appeared at a computer security conference in San Jose, Calif., this week, he greeted his audience with a quip. "I'm really glad to be here," said the Microsoft Corp. chairman. "My other invitation was to go quail hunting with Dick Cheney."
Cheney's accidental shooting of his hunting companion is occupying a prominent and unusual place in the national zeitgeist, provoking hilarity and horror all at once. As the Elmer Fudd references fly, the 78-year-old victim lies in the hospital with a shotgun pellet lodged near his heart. But whether you're amused or horrified, there's no question the incident has provided irresistible fodder for chat - any kind of chat.
There were the undeniable comic implications, which late-night TV hosts grabbed with gusto. Although the story took on a much more serious tone Tuesday when victim Harry Whittington suffered a mild heart attack, that did little to stop the jokes.
