Glenn Close -- Born to Nap

Glenn Close hates to be ignored -- but she doesn't mind doing it to others.

Glenn got a little shuteye during the Bruce Springsteen concert at Madison Square Garden this weekend.

Mel Gibson looked content in the row behind her -- but former Lakers coach Pat Riley looks like the happiest guy in the building.

Springsteen Cancels Show After Family Death

Bruce Springsteen canceled a concert in Kansas City tonight after his cousin, Lenny Sullivan, was found dead in his hotel room -- a source close to the band tells TMZ.

Springsteen announced the death on his official website, saying it was a "death in the family."

We're told Sullivan worked for Springsteen for 10 years as an assistant tour manager.

Cops and paramedics responded to the hotel where Bruce and the band were staying at around 4:15 PM. Sullivan was found dead in the hotel and circumstances are currently under investigation.

UPDATE: Bruce updated his website with this statement: "Lenny Sullivan, Bruce's cousin and the assistant road manager of the E Street Band for the last ten years, passed away today at the age of 36. A warm and sensitive person, he was beloved by Bruce, the Band, the crew, and the entire Thrill Hill family."

Who's the Boss?

Tom Hanks might be the biggest movie star in the world, but when Bruce Springsteen is around, there is only one Boss.

The random duo was spotted on a speedboat in St. Bart's over the weekend, where Tom was vacationing with his wife, Rita Wilson.

The pair's last collaboration was quite successful: Hanks and Springsteen both won Oscars for their work on 1993's "Philadelphia." They should get together more often.

Killers/Springsteen: You've Heard ... Now LISTEN

Even before The Killers delivered their second album, "Sam's Town," references to Bruce Springsteen's 1975 "Born to Run" had been littered throughout almost every website, article, or review one could get their hands on. Are the comparisons warranted? Listen to the intros of both "When You Were Young" and "Born to Run" for yourself.
Springsteen/Killers audio
"Springsteen touches on the American dream, and that idea runs through the record. It's very optimistic," was a statement made by Killers frontman Brandon Flowers himself. But where he first truly channeled Springsteen publicly was in his confidence to say that "Sam's Town" would be the "best album of the past 20 years," much like the confidence Bruce has displayed throughout his career. If he could only remember the one thing that Springsteen never forgot -- to let the music speak for itself -- during interviews about his new mustache.

Then there's the question of their live shows. Bruce has been regarded as one of America's greatest live musicians, putting on legendary three-hour spectacles. The Killers performed the song "When You Were Young" this past Saturday on "Saturday Night Live" and took an immediate hit from critics. Thanks to the rare footage that you can get in the 30th anniversary edition of "Born to Run" we can also see Bruce perform "Born to Run" in 1975 when he was about the same age as Mr. Flowers is now. Compare those -- then you can be the judge.

White House Aides Love to Rock

Hopefully at least some of you have been paying attention to the lobbying scandal involving disgraced Republican lobbyist Jack Abramoff and the White House. I know it's nowhere as hip as who's hanging at Hyde, but it is just as sleazy (although maybe not as sleazy as a Congressmen emailing 16 year old boys). Turns out there is a music side note to the whole affair: concert tickets were a significant part of the gift giving Enterprise.

Composite of Bruce Springsteen and Bono above the Capital Building

Susan Ralston, personal aide to the infamous Karl Rove, who prior to that worked directly for Abramoff before moving to the White House, was a primary recipient of the tix. See reportedly saw nine different events on Abramoff's tab while working for Rove, including nabbing four seats for a Springsteen concert. Maybe she didn't know that Bruce campaigned against Bush and more than once used the word "impeach" when referring to the President? Or, maybe she's got no clue who Tom Joad is either? Beyond the Boss, seems Ralston is an Andrea Boccelli fan too - now that, along with former White House aide Jennifer Farley's reported request for Yanni tix from Abramoff associates, makes more sense!

Ken Melman, former White House Director of Political Affairs and a major player in President Bush's re-election campaign, was another White House wannabe hipster. He reportedly looked to Abramoff to get his U2 fix. Didn't he get to sit in on the Bush-Bono meetings? It seems the concerts were seen as a place to get these insiders in a good mood to talk "business." According to the official report issued by the House of Representatives Committee on Government Reform (can you say fox watching the hen house?), "when Abramoff learned from his staff that "Ken Mehlman of the White House apparently wants to go," but it was unclear if "we can fit 2 more in for Friday night," he instructed his staff: "We must." A day before the concert, [Lobbyist Kevin Ring] e-mailed Abramoff that he would "talk to Mehlman at the concert tomorrow night" about positions at the Department of Labor." Nice perks if you can get 'em!

With Bono droning on about helping the poor at every show, I'm sure someone at least thought to themselves, just "shut up and sing."

Bruce and Patti Go Rumor-Squelching

UPDATE 6:08pm: Bruce Springsteen has posted a statement on his website, brucespringsteen.net: "I hesitate to use this website for anything personal believing it should remain a place where fans of my music can come free of the distractions that occasionally arise with the rest of my job. However, due to the unfounded and ugly rumors that have appeared in the papers over the last few days, I felt they shouldn't pass without comment. Patti and I have been together for 18 years- the best 18 years of my life. We have built a beautiful family we love and want to protect and our commitment to one another remains as strong as the day we were married."

Bruce Springsteen and Patti Scialfa threw some cold water on rumors that a split between the two of them was imminent with a little antique-shopping trip last Friday -- and even gave fellow patrons an impromptu concert.

TMZ spoke to Judy Barnaby, a manager at the Antique Center of Red Bank in Red Bank, NJ, about an hour from New York City, who told us that the couple showed up on Friday afternoon and perused the store's antiques for about an hour, holding hands and acting "not at all different" from their customary behavior.

Is Bruce Running Into Another Woman's Arms?

Bruce SpringsteenThe New York Post reports that Bruce Springsteen's long time marriage to Patti Scialfa is in deep trouble.

The alleged problem is Bruce's blossoming friendship with a stunning 9/11 widow the Boss met when he organized the "America: A Tribute to Heroes" telethon. The two have been spotted several times at the Beacon Hill Beach Club and the Stone Pony, the Asbury Park watering hole made famous in "Glory Days."

The Post quotes several "friends" of Springsteen who can't seem to decide on whether the couple is on the rocks or not. One friend says "They're separated, but everyone has been sworn to secrecy," while another friend states "He's just a really big flirt. There's nothing going on. Bruce and Patti are very much partners. They go at it a lot and fight, but they also work at it a lot... Patti is a strong woman. They are not going anywhere." Confused yet? So are we.

A Springsteen representative declined comment.

"Expanded Editions" Latest Record Label Ploy?

We all know how much fun it is, at least for die hard fans, to go out and grab the latest offering from your favorite band or artist. Getting the new songs on the first day in stores is not only fun, it's important to the artist. Those early sales impact how much hype and press the labels will help generate for the rest of the sales cycle. But, back to the fans.

I remember more than once showing up at a record store (remember those?) with friends to grab a new release and heading back to someone's house for an impromptu listening party. Those bonding experiences among friends also bond you to the artist and that particular record. So, you can imagine that some who go out that first day or week to get their favorite band's record would be a bit disappointed if just months later the same record comes out again with a few new songs added.

Springsteen Joins Jazz Fest Lineup

Bob Dylan, Dave Matthews Band also set to perform

By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

(Mar. 8) -- The Boss is heading to New Orleans.

A performance by Bruce Springsteen is one of 35 added to the lineup for this year's New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, scheduled over two weekends -- April 28-30 and May 5-7. He's slated to close out the first weekend, festival producer Quint Davis said Wednesday.

Springsteen will perform with the Seeger Sessions Band, the musicians who backed him on an upcoming album inspired by folk singer Pete Seeger. It's scheduled for release April 25. Davis said part of the album's title, "We Shall Overcome," is a fitting theme for the spirit of the storm-battered city.

It features Springsteen's interpretations of 13 traditional folk songs that have been associated for decades with Seeger.

Etta James, Herbie Hancock, Dave Bartholomew and Warren Haynes were among the acts announced Wednesday.

Dr. John, Bob Dylan and Cowboy Mouth will be performing on opening day, April 28. Galactic, the Dave Matthews Band and Clarence "Frogman" Henry will perform April 29, and joining Springsteen on April 30 will be the Meters, Yolanda Adams and Allen Toussaint.

Kicking off the second weekend on May 5: Doug Kershaw, Keith Urban, Little Feat, Marcia Ball and Koko Taylor and Her Blues Machine. Jimmy Buffet, the Radiators, Buckwheat Zydeco and the Dirty Dozen Brass Band perform on May 6, and Fats Domino, Paul Simon, Lionel Richie, Irma Thomas and Pete Fountain close out the festival on May 7.

As usual, Jazz Fest will be held at the New Orleans Fair Grounds. The horse racing track was flooded and had wind damage from Hurricane Katrina, but work crews have been repairing and upgrading damaged areas, Davis said.

As with Mardi Gras, it's hard to say what kind of attendance this year's festival will draw. It usually brings in roughly 500,000 music lovers over the course of the two weekends.

Springsteen, Sting, Simon Serenade James Taylor With His Tunes

By BETH HARRIS, ASSOCIATED PRESS WRITER

From Bruce Springsteen's mournful harmonica on "Millworker" to Sting's acoustic guitar on "Close Your Eyes," a generation of singer-songwriters influenced by James Taylor paid tribute to him with their versions of his hits.

Stories abounded when a powerhouse lineup of Sheryl Crow, Bonnie Raitt, Paul Simon, Jackson Browne, David Crosby, the Dixie Chicks, Dr. John and Taj Mahal kicked off Grammy week by honoring the 57-year-old Taylor as MusiCares Person of the Year on Monday night.

Crow was 12 when she saw Taylor at her first concert.

"It was the first time ever I heard 16,000 people sing in unison," she told 2,200 people at the Los Angeles Convention Center. "It was the first time I ever smelled pot and I knew I wanted to be a musician. This is for you, James. You changed my life."

Then she, Browne and Crosby launched into "Mexico," highlighted by a standout horn section.

Bruce Springsteen's 'Born to Run' Marks 30th Anniversary

After 30 years, the Boss is still running.

In the release of 'Born to Run 30th Anniversary Edition,' rock legend Bruce Springsteen gives an inside look at what went into the song and album that many consider to be one of the most prolific rock 'n' roll albums of all time. You don't even have to be from New Jersey to enjoy it.

The three-disc box set includes a richly remastered DVD of the legendary 1975 Hammersmith Odeon concert, previously unpublished photos and a 90-minute documentary of 'Wings for Wheels: The Making of Born to Run.'

"I wanted it to sound enormous, to grab you by your throat," Springsteen told Rolling Stone in a recent interview about the making of the anthem. "[To] insist that you take that ride, insist that you pay attention -- not just to the music, but to life, to being alive."

Sample concert tracks include 'Thunder Road,' 'Tenth Avenue Freeze Out' and 'Jungleland,' plus interviews with his E Street Band members Clarence Clemons, Max Weinberg and Stevie Van Zandt.

'Born to Run 30th Anniversary Edition' drops on Nov. 15 on Columbia Records.
