Pissed "Sideways" Star Nearly Sideswipes Taxi

Paul Giamatti can be a little cantankerous, but was especially so last night when he got into a little scrape with a NYC cab. Hey, taxi!

TMZ spotted Giamatti on Lafayette Street, where he'd just gotten into what the NYPD says was "a minor fender-bender." Thankfully, no one was hurt, and no one was arrested. Giamatti was, according to the NYPD, pulling into traffic when he and the cabbie nudged each other -- maybe he'd be a little happier if he got a new ride. Dude is an Oscar nominee -- what's with the 2000 Subaru?

Guess who was even less happy to see us than Paul?

Paul's Mystery "Lady"

Giamatti follows up his Oscar-nominated performance in "Cinderella Man" with the eerie thriller "Lady in the Water." The M. Night Shyamalan film opens next weekend and definitely echoes the director's other spine-chilling movies, "The Sixth Sense" and "The Village."

Giamatti plays Cleveland Heep, a janitor of an apartment complex, "I'm sort of hiding in this place," he says of his part, "I've taken on this mindless job, sort of shut myself off and this is what I do and become a hermit in this little house that I live in on the premises."

Of course, being a Shyamalan film, there are sure to be a few twists and turns and this movie is no different. When Heep finds a mysterious woman, played by Bryce Dallas Howard, in the pool outside his home, the creep factor starts to rise. "She at first seems like this strange young girl but something seems odd about her, but fairly quickly I start to figure out she's not quite human."

"Lady in the Water" opens July 21 in theaters.

Witherspoon, Hoffman Win Top SAG Honors

By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Reese Witherspoon as singer June Carter in "Walk the Line" and Philip Seymour Hoffman as author Truman Capote in "Capote" won lead-acting awards Sunday from the Screen Actors Guild, while the ensemble drama "Crash" pulled off an upset win over Brokeback Mountain" for the overall cast award.

Rachel Weisz of the murder thriller "The Constant Gardener" and Paul Giamatti of the boxing drama "Cinderella Man" received supporting-acting honors.

"Oh, my God, y'all. Sometimes, I can't just shake the feeling that I'm just a little girl from Tennessee," said Witherspoon, who plays Carter during her long, stormy courtship with country legend Johnny Cash. "I want to say my biggest inspiration for this movie obviously was June Carter. She was an incredible woman."

Hoffman had gushing thanks for his "Capote" co-stars.

"It's important to say that actors can't act alone, it's impossible. What we have to do is support each other," Hoffman said. "Actors have to have each others' backs. It's the only way to act well is when you know the other actor has your back, and these actors had my back, and I hope they know I had theirs."
