'Sopranos' Star Calls In a Hit Over Miss Cali

The guy who played Johnny Sack is so pissed off about the Miss California controversy -- he called in to the TMZ tipline to unload!

Johnny Sack - Play audio

According to our first celebrity voicemail, Vince Curatola is furious with certain people (blogger Perez Hilton, in particular) for bashing Miss California Carrie Prejean after she voiced her opinion on gay marriage -- calling the attacks "disgusting."

Curatola even issued Perez a challenge -- "I wish he'd come after me that way."

Soprano Drops Drawers, $cores Bigtime!

Paying $17,000 for second-hand underwear is steep -- but that's what one bidder put down to own the boxers that once held Tony Soprano's family jewels.

The entire "Sopranos" auction at Christie's raked in $187,750 for charity, but not getting a taste of the take must have had its toll on James Gandolfini -- he looked miserable.

AJ Soprano's Place Whacked By a Crane

TMZ has learned that "Sopranos" star Robert Iler owned one of the units in the building damaged in today's massive crane collapse in NY.
Robert Iler
Iler, who played A.J. Soprano on the hit show, was home at the time, felt the impact and heard people screaming. He quickly escaped the building without injury. Sources tell us the whole episode was "very traumatic" for the young star as he saw all the devastation first hand. Iler has lived in the building several years. His apartment was not affected.

The 200-foot crane collapsed on Manhattan's Upper East Side, where the 32-story luxury condo complex was under construction. Two workers were killed and one was seriously injured.

This is the second such crane collapse in nearly three months.

Story developing ...

"Sopranos" Fans Don't Stop Downloading

While a lot of people were upset by last week's ambiguous and abrupt "Sopranos" series finale, there's one group that couldn't have asked for a better ending -- Journey!
Steve Perry and Sopranos
After the '80s band's power ballad, "Don't Stop Believin," played in the background during the last minutes of the episode, fans caused downloads of the song to jump 482%. Don't stop, indeed! The karaoke staple even made it to #1 on iTunes Music Rock Chart -- not bad for a song the same age as Jamie-Lynn Sigler aka the parking-challenged Meadow Soprano.

The 1981 arena-rock anthem is no stranger to contemporary audiences, having been featured in key scenes in Charlize Theron's "Monster" and in 2005 episodes of "Family Guy" and "Laguna Beach." Steve Perry's mortgage thanks you!

"Sopranos" Final Season Hits A High Note

Click here to return to TMZ.comThe final season of "The Sopranos" is setting up to be one of the most anticipated television experiences of the coming year. After an ankle injury for James Gandolfini, the premiere was pushed from its original date of January 2007 to sometime in March. But never fear -- it now appears that production is full swing.

Paparazzi caught up with the "Sopranos" cast on set yesterday in Queens, NY. Fat Joe, who recently added a collaboration with Paris Hilton on her debut album to his resume, was also on set. It isn't clear whether or not he was just dropping by to get his pic taken with some of his favorite stars, or if he will be making a guest appearance in a few episodes. TMZ contacted HBO, and reps would not comment on Joe's presence on set. Our guess is that he will be making a cameo on the hit show, using his already mob-like persona for more than just music.

On another note, Robert Iler, who plays A.J. Soprano (Tony's son), was looking a lot rougher than he has in the past. His character, usually portrayed as a pansy, may be grooming himself to follow in his father's footsteps. The suit and the goatee say, "I'm working for Dad now!" Again, HBO opted not to comment to TMZ, so for now, that's just our theory.

'The Sopranos' Returns With a Haunting Kickoff

Long-awaited new season kicks off Sunday

By RAZIER MOORE, AP TELEVISION WRITER

(Mar. 7) -- So one FBI agent says to another, "Nobody ever went broke underestimating the taste of the American public."

Out of the blue, this is the first thing heard in the first episode of the long-awaited return of HBO's "The Sopranos."

Why is a Fed quoting H.L. Mencken? If you've been counting the minutes until 9 p.m. EST Sunday, you need pay no mind to such a question. Or to this column either, beyond its observation that the new "Sopranos" season looks to be the strongest, most penetrating yet.

Enough said. Sunday's premiere, titled "Members Only," should be seen in its pure state, and yours, free of any advance skinny. That's how I viewed it. Since then I have watched it three more times. It's that good, from its eerie start to its startling climax. I only wish I could see it for the first time again.

There. Consider the preceding your spoiler alert.

The episode's initial sequence, as mesmerizing as anything "The Sopranos" has framed in its five prior years, is a slyly disjointed succession of images -- or what seems disjointed on first viewing. But what lies beneath is a fluid foreshadowing of the season ahead.

As the hour wears on, it seems Tony's universe is breaking down.

Let Tony (played by James Gandolfini) pay lip service to his current run of luck -- no, it's "more than luck," he boasts. In almost the same breath he confides a gnawing fear to his wife, Carmela (Edie Falco), adding, "Why do you think I toss at night? It ain't just the apnea."

But "Sopranos" mastermind David Chase and his creative team haven't upped the tension level so much as introduced a whole new algorithm for conjuring dread.

"I'm worried," Carmela tells a friend.

"Everybody worries," her friend replies.

"No," persists Carmela. "I am worried all the time."

Let the characters worry. For the viewer, it's thrilling to behold. It's a rush.

Since Season Five's conclusion in June 2004, roughly 18 months have passed in "Sopranos" Time as life goes on:

-- Tony's sister Janice (Aida Turturro) and her mobster-hubby Bobby Bacala (Steve R. Schirripa) have had a baby daughter.

-- Carmela grows curious what happened to Adriana, whom no one has heard from, as Carmela notes, "for over a year" (around the time poor Ade was executed on Tony's orders for having been an FBI informant).

-- Tony's hothead nephew Christopher (Michael Imperioli), who was Adriana's fiance until playing his role in her disappearing act, is on the wagon (again) and all the more foul-tempered for his booze-and-drugs abstinence.

-- And if you weren't otherwise convinced that the world of Tony Soprano had been rocked in its moorings, ponder this: He and Carmela are hooked on Japanese cuisine. On the first episode, Tony dines out once on pasta, but three times on sushi.

"I don't know about you, but ever since we found this place I catch myself fantasizing about this," says Carmela as she savors a bite of eel.

"Me, too," says Tony, grinning. "Sometimes during sex."

Other things remain status quo.

Tony and Carmela's teenage son A.J. (Robert Iler) is still a sullen screwup.

Tony, though currently skipping his antidepressants (not a good idea), still sees his psychiatrist, Dr. Melfi (Lorraine Bracco), though how much progress he has made in his six years of therapy is debatable: "You still, after all this time, cannot accept you had a mother who didn't love you," Melfi tells him as he squirms.

And Tony's Uncle Junior (Dominic Chianese) has continued his Alzheimer's-fueled descent into addled paranoia and hostility.

It still tears up Tony to see the old man losing his marbles -- never mind that, a while back, Uncle Junior conspired with Tony's mother to have him whacked. But Tony has his blind spots, typified when he lectures A.J. that "friends are gonna let you down. Family: They're the only ones you can depend on."

What really seems to haunt him is the loss of self he is seeing in his uncle -- which only heightens his own existential doubts. Too introspective for his own good, Tony more than ever seems plagued by questions about who he is and how he can hold on to his identity.

The episode ends with Tony cooking dinner for Uncle Junior, with a vintage Artie Shaw record playing on the phonograph.

"Comes a rain storm, put your rubbers on your feet. Comes a snow storm, you can get a little heat." The pop-song lyrics may recall for viewers Tony's panic-stricken slog through the snow fleeing FBI agents at the end of last season. His shoes got soaked and he got cold, but he cheated fate then.

"Comes love," the song continues -- "nothing can be done."

Can anything be done? As the season begins, that's the terrifying question the episode ends with.

James Gandolfini Reflective As 'The Sopranos' Nears End

By DAVID BAUDER, AP TELEVISION WRITER

Tony Soprano can be tough on James Gandolfini, too.

"It's a dark, dark world and you're in it a lot," the star of "The Sopranos" said of his career-defining character. "However, if you're in a dark world, I can't think of any other to be in. There are a lot of pluses. It just takes a heavy toll sometimes."

Gandolfini was reflective on Friday talking about "The Sopranos," which returns to HBO on March 12 after a hiatus three months shy of two years. Fans are eager for something new, yet Gandolfini is in the midst of filming the last several episodes.

Seated on a stage with co-stars Edie Falco, Lorraine Bracco and Michael Imperioli, Gandolfini noted that only Bracco had much success prior to the series and many of the show's actors went through the whirlwind of sudden fame.

"It's been an incredible life lesson that a lot of us wouldn't have had without this opportunity," he said. "It teaches you about what's important."

The actors, and series creator David Chase, did a delicate dance with reporters in trying to say something but ultimately reveal nothing about the final season. Twelve new episodes will start in March, and a final eight in January 2007.
