Polanski Lawyers Fight -- Chalet Jail a Possibility

Roman PolanskiRoman Polanski's lawyers are angling to block any extradition attempt by asking a Swiss judge to release him from custody ...on grounds the move by U.S. law enforcement to haul him back was illegal.

Polanski is currently in a prison cell in Zurich, Switzerland. There's now talk that he could be placed on house arrest while lawyers fight it out. Here's the best part -- the house would be Polanski's Gstaad chalet .... nice work if you can get it.

Polanski fled the U.S. after pleading guilty in 1977 to having unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor. The judge in the case reneged on the plea agreement and that's when Roman beat a hasty retreat to France.

The decision on whether to free Polanski is expected to take weeks.

Roman Polanski Arrested -- Finally

Roman PolanskiRoman Polanski will not be able to attend the Zurich Film Festival -- which was set to honor him with a lifetime achievement award -- because he got arrested for that whole statutory rape thing he's been fleeing from for the past 30 years.

The famed director was taken into custody by Swiss authorities trying to enter Switzerland yesterday.

Polanski pled guilty in 1977 to having unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor (she was 13) but then fled the United States before he could be sentenced. Polanski has lived in France ever since to avoid being arrested.

There has been no timeline set as to when or if he will be extradited back to the U.S.

UPDATE -- According to Sandi Gibbons, spokeswoman for the Los Angeles County district attorney's office, the U.S. Justice Department worked in conjunction with Swiss authorities in securing the arrest. According to the LA Times, they had come close to arresting Polanski several times over the past decade.

Jessica Alba Was Right ... We Were Wrong

Jessica Alba Jessica Alba is fuming at TMZ for calling her dumb when she called Sweden a "neutral" country last week ... even though it currently has troops in Afghanistan.

She is absolutely correct. Sweden was a neutral country ... 60 years ago.

Even though she was engaged in a debate about the current political situation in America when she advised a reporter to "Be Sweden ... be neutral" -- Alba is swinging back at critics, like TMZ, on her blog saying, "It's so sad to me that you think the only neutral country during WWII was Switzerland."

She is absolutely correct -- when the Nazis were waging war on anyone who opposed Hitler's evil rule, Sweden remained neutral and stayed out of the war. After the war, Winston Churchill referred to Sweden as "that small, coward country."

We apologize for not considering the political climate of the world in 1942 when we suggested she may have meant, "Be Switzerland" -- a country that is currently neutral.

Our sincerest apologies.
