Mikhail Gorbachev Dead at 91

Published | Updated

Mikhail Gorbachev, the last leader of the Soviet Union who was largely responsible for ending the Cold War, has died.

Gorbachev was General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union from 1985 - 1991. His title changed to President in 1990.

He was initially a Marxist-Leninist, but eventually realized his country needed to evolve into a more democratic union.

Maybe the most famous reference to Gorbachev was one where he was not present -- when Ronald Reagan paid a visit to the Berlin wall -- which separated the Communist East Berlin from the democratic West Berlin -- and challenged his counterpart to "tear down this wall."

Gorbachev won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1990 for his role in ending the Cold War.

His rise was spectacular -- raised by peasant parents, he climbed the political ladder to the top.

Gorbachev was Kennedy-esque in the sense he was a vibrant leader with a very glamorous wife -- Raisa -- who was a fashionista in the same vein as Jackie Kennedy.

He had a very distinct, large birthmark on his forehead ... it was quite prominent, and on occasion, when he sat for an official photo, the birthmark was removed for the portrait.

By 1991, the Soviet Union had broken apart and Gorbachev stepped down and handed the mantle of power to Boris Yeltsin.

Gorbachev was 91. RIP

Mable John Motown's 1st Female Solo Artist Dead at 91

Published | Updated

Mable John -- Motown's first female solo artist -- has died.

The singer passed away at her L.A. home Thursday, this according to her nephew, Kevin John ... who spoke to The Detroit News. He said, "We loved her and she was a kind person." A cause of death wasn't offered.

Berry Gordy signed MJ to his new label -- then known as Tamla Records -- in 1958. She was the first woman under his brand to get her own record deal without a group attached. Other acts that were signed early included Smokey Robinson (and the Miracles), Eddie Holland and Mary Wells.

Gordy actually served as a coach/mentor for John -- who was opening for Billie Holiday in Detroit during the '50s. She and BG had a solid partnership, which flourished into a somewhat short-lived working relationship under Motown. She left the label in mid-'60s.

Still, John recorded a number of songs with them during her tenure. Some of her famous tracks include, "Who Wouldn't Love a Man Like That?," "No Love," "Actions Speak Louder Than Words," "Looking for a Man," "You Are My Only Love!" among others.

After a brief stint with Motown, she went on to sign with Stax Records -- where she churned out a memorable hit, "Your Good Thing (Is About to End)." John left Stax and went on to perform with the Raelettes, backing Ray Charles. Eventually, she hung her mainstream career and pursued a career in gospel music ... getting very involved with the church.

She opened her own charity in Los Angeles called the Joy Community Outreach, which does work with homeless people. Despite stepping away from showbiz, she certainly left her mark.

Mable John was 91. RIP

'Star Trek's Nichelle Nichols Ashes Boldly Going to Deep Space On Vulcan Rocket Launch

Published | Updated

'Star Trek' legend Nichelle Nichols is heading back to space with several of her Enterprise crewmates ... part of an incredibly fitting mission to put their remains into orbit.

Nichelle, who starred as Lieutenant Uhura and passed away back in July, will have her ashes added to the payload of a Vulcan rocket launching later this year for the moon and beyond.

United Launch Alliance's Vulcan Centaur mission will first deliver a robotic lunar lander -- to scout for NASA's future Artemis flights to the moon -- but then it will continue deeper into the solar system for the 'Star Trek' tribute.

The rocket will deliver Nichelle's remains -- as well as 'Star Trek' creator Gene Roddenberry, James Doohan ("Scotty") and Majel Barrett Roddenberry ("Nurse Chapel") -- into a so-called "graveyard orbit" around the sun.

As for the fact, the 'Trek' greats' final flight will be on a "Vulcan" rocket ship -- Nichelle's son, Kyle Johnson, says "I'm sure she would have much preferred to go on the shuttle, but this was a pretty close second."

Hey, Mr. Spock's smiling somewhere.

Zion National Park Missing Hiker Found Dead ... Flash Floods in Narrows

Published | Updated

A woman who went missing while hiking in Utah has been found dead -- this after flash floods besieged the area ... and her being swept away may have even been caught on video.

The body of 29-year-old Jetal Agnihotri was discovered Monday in Zion National Park where she'd been hiking with friends on Friday before going missing that evening. Park officials say she ended up near some sandstone cliffs, known as the Court of the Patriarchs along the Virgin River ... rather far from her last known whereabouts.

FAMILY BELIEVES THIS IS JETAL

Agnihotri had stayed behind when a downpour hit Zion, wanting to explore the Narrows before meeting up with her group. The Narrows is a popular hike, where people are often knee-deep in water as they traverse the winding trail within the park's canyons.

When she didn't show at a rendezvous, her party notified staff ... and a multi-day search got underway with upwards of 170 professionals fanning out to look for her -- an effort that included search dogs. Now, an autopsy will be done to determine her cause of death.

Her family has told local media they believe her being carried away by an extremely powerful current was actually captured on camera by another group of hikers further down the trail in the Narrows.

The clip shows two people -- a man and a woman -- floating in debris-filled water that's at an incredibly high level. The woman is barely visible, almost slumbered entirely as people scream and look on.

Agnihotri was eventually found 6 miles from where she went missing ... so it would seem she was taken downstream quite a ways. That's how strong the water can get there, especially during monsoon season ... running from July through September at Zion.

The woman was a graduate student at the University of Arizona, and was expected to start school again in the fall.
