Mike Modano was drafted in the first round, first overall selection, by the Minnesota North Stars in the 1988 NHL entry draft. He played his first NHL regular season game on October 5, 1989 vs. the NY Islanders in which he scored his first NHL goal and first NHL point. For his 1989-90 season, Mike was named The Hockey News Rookie of the Year, named to the NHL All-Rookie team, won the North Stars' Rookie of the Year award, and was the runner up in the Calder Trophy (NHL Rookie of the Year) voting. Modano played in his first NHL All-Star Game in 1993. The North Stars franchise relocated to Dallas and was renamed the Dallas Stars for the 1993-94 season during which Mike scored a career-high 50 goals, the most ever by a Stars' center. During the 1995-96 season, Mike scored his 500th NHL point on March 20 vs. St. Louis and played in his 500th NHL game on April 12 at Anaheim. Mike also played for World Cup of Hockey Champions Team USA in the 1996 World Cup of Hockey Tournament.
