Eidth Shain is the nurse in the iconic LIFE Magazine photo of the sailor kissing the nurse in Times Square, 1945. The picture was taken by renown photographer Alfred Eisenstaedt and is acclaimed as the most recognizable photo of the 20th century and has come to symbolize the end of WWII and the begininning of the Baby Boomer generation. It has appeared on the front of LIFE Magazine more than any other photo. This was a candid photo. Edith was working at Doctor's Hospital in NYC when she and a friend heard on the radio that WWII had ended. They went to Times Square where all the celebrating was and as soon as she got off the subway, the sailor grabbed and kissed her. She thought she might as well let him kiss her since he fought for her in war. The picture appeared inside LIFE Magazine that September, however, Edith did not tell the world who she was until many years later when she wrote Eisenstaedt a letter. Subsequently, they became very good friends. Edith was born in 1919 and currently lives in Los Angeles, CA where she actively participates in parades and public events commemorating veterans.
