Why Jelly Roll Chose To Start His Health Journey

Jelly Roll's weight-loss journey began in 2015, when he revealed in the caption of an Instagram post that a doctor had advised him to visit either a "meat processor or truck stop" in order to find a scale that could accurately describe his weight at the time -- which was over 500 pounds -- and described the experience as "one of the most embarrassing days of my life." He also acknowledged that he had put on the weight consciously, adding that he "had done it to myself."

He Went Back And Forth With His Weight Early In His Career

The performer went on to write that he began "fighting to save my own life" the following year, and although he lost "roughly 200 pounds," he gained much of the weight back after falling back into unhealthy habits. He then remarked that it was difficult "living out of truck stops" while on tour, and that he hadn't paid attention to his alcohol intake, both of which resulted in him gaining 60 pounds back after his weight loss.

Jelly Roll Eventually Began Taking His Health Seriously

The performer solidified his dedication to his health further into his career, and he shared a post on X in February of 2023 and claimed he had been exercising and eating well in order to "bring the best version of me " to his fans. Jelly Roll added that he'd added "praying and meditating" to his wellness routine and was dedicated to showing his listeners "growth and gratitude" through his physical change.

Jelly Roll Started Training For A Race And Set Various Health Goals

The hitmaker revealed that he had begun training for a 5K race in January of 2024, and he told People that he had been "shedding weight" and "eating crazy good" in preparation for the event. Jelly Roll pointed out that his participation in the 5K would likely come in the form of "a brisk power walk" and that one of his big fitness goals was "to be able to do a 15-minute mile."

He Made Serious Progress While Preparing For The Race

Jelly Roll later told People that he was "probably down 70-something pounds" as a result of his training for the 5K ... and that he was looking to drop "another 100, 100-and-something" pounds after completing the event. The singer added that he was feeling "really good" about his dedication to health and he could "only imagine what I'm going to feel like by the time I go on tour."

Jelly Roll's Hard Work Paid Off

The singer went on to complete the 2 Bears 5K, which was held in Pasadena, California, as part of the Netflix Is A Joke festival, in May of 2024, and he celebrated his accomplishment with a cold plunge. He was also joined by comedians Bert Kreischer and Tom Segura, as well as his wife, Bunnie XO, for the event.

He's Made Huge Strides In His Weight-Loss Journey

Jelly Roll revealed that he had lost nearly 200 pounds during an appearance at Pat McAfee's Big Night Aht event, where he claimed that he "started at 540 pounds and I was 357 pounds this morning." He then claimed that he wanted to lose a further 100 pounds after which he would "go skydiving with my wife in Sweden" to celebrate his weight loss.

The hitmaker's also spoken about the activities he's been able to complete after losing a considerable amount of weight, and told E! News that he had gone for a hike through the mountains, and said there was "no way that would have been possible beforehand." Jelly Roll also remarked that it felt "great to see that progress" with his health during his hike.
