Oprah's 'O'cademy

1/2/2007 4:24 PM PST BY TMZ STAFF

Just call it the Oprah Winfrey School for Girls.

The billionaire talk show diva opened a school in a small town south of Johannesburg, South Africa today. The school for underprivileged girls boasts computer and science laboratories, a library and theater, and was built as a result of a meeting between Winfrey and the country's former President, Nelson Mandela.

The event was attended in South Africa by celebs Mariah Carey, Tina Turner, Chris Tucker, Mary J. Blige and Spike Lee.

Of her decision to open a school in South Africa instead of the U.S., Winfrey dissed American kids by telling Newsweek, "If you ask the kids what they want or need, they will say an iPod or some sneakers. In South Africa, they don't ask for money or toys. They ask for uniforms so they can go to school."

Mr. Unite Us

Well this African American man thinks what Oprah is doing is wonderful.
She grew up poor and without running water herself. To be to this for
young women is wonderful.

I understand she also plans on setting up an all boys school.

Now if she could do that in South Africa, we ought to make sure all American
children have an opportunity to receive a great education.

$40 million dollars is coincidently Oprah’s weekly allowance in food and beverages; however, people in “the know” have reported that portions of this weekly ration are increasingly being paid to Oprah’s best friend, Gayle, so that she would one day, “Get a clue” and change her hair style. What is more astonishing than Gayle’s reluctance to step into the 21st century with her hair are Oprah’s…. more at

Charity starts at home. Oprah said when she visits schools in America and asks kids what they want she said they ask for ipods and sneakers. Maybe they learned the materialistic things in life from watching the Oprah show all those cars given away and all the goodies under the seats. The cruise ships and the platters of food brought to the audience. When it comes to blameing our materialistic society for our failures OPRAH IS A STITCH IN THE FABRIC.

I have never before participated in a blog but I am compelled to comment on this one. I refuse to watch Oprah and go so far as to turn to another station when this self important media made star mogul with no substance appears on the screen. It is disgusting that the 40 million was used just to built a school in the middle of nowhere but more so since this school discriminates against whites and males. If an all white male school were built in any country Oprah would be the first to hold court from her studio pulpit and invite a gang of ultra liberal hollywood know-nothing rich entertainers show up to provide their expert opinions. This palace is out of place in such a poor nation and is catering to a select hand-ful (152) of girls who apparently have been annointed by Oprah as being "special" above the other thousands who would love to attend. With an annual cost to operate at 10 million somebody is going to be holding the bag down the road. I agree that it is important to do something to educate poor countries but Oprah does not have the resources to save the world and she is only creating more disappointment for the masses by giving such luxury to the few.

Do you know that most families in South Africia have domestic help (housekeepers, nannies, maids, etc.)? This is not a poor country.

. You know AFRICA is a poor COUNTRY? It's NOT a country, it's a CONTINENT. Countries in Africa include for instance Egypt, Morocco, Gambia, Tanzania and Sudan. You don't think Europe is a country as well, do you?

Hey, genius - South Africa is a country on the continent of Africa. It's at the bottom of the continent. You might want to check it out.

Mad Balls

My prediction is this will be an elitist school that will do little to change the conditions in Africa . Educated blacks from this school will move out of Africa . Those who stay will face a place that has little or no middle class . Oprah would have done much more to use less computers and ipods and allowed more children to attend this school . Nice idea but not any beginning to a cure . Go ahead and argue but history will prove me right . Dickhead .

Kathie is a phony

Ok, first of all, I am sick of seeing Oprah on TV. She is so full of herself lately, and it's disgusting to see how many people consider her word "law." She tells you to read a book, these idiots run to the bookstore. She is just a PERSON, not God! She made millions doing nothing but open her yap. What does that tell you blacks who think America is racist against you? Look around at all the black celebrities. They seem to be flashing their bling alot more than they used to. What happened to integrity and humility? Rappers make millions singing that sh*t that isn't even music! Damn, isn't this is a great country!
Second, OF COURSE the inner city kids want the bling and not the education. That's what they learn from their piers there. Drugs and crime are the easier way to go for many of them. Education? Heaven forbid! That's too much like work! If you want to get your community back to being a civilized place to live, either STOP having so many children, or get off your asses and go to work to support them, to show them how to make a REAL life for themselves. Stop depending on the rest of us to support you with Welfare. We get enough people off Welfare, taxes would go down, and everyone would have it easier.
And last, Africa can go to hell! We need help HERE in this country. Want to help these third world nations? GIVE THEM SOME DAMN BIRTH CONTROL!! They have kids in litters there, none of which they can support! Funny how they seem to have time to screw, but not to be responsible for the after effects!

Oprah, try giving some of that money you will never be able to use up in your lifetime to people that are in desperate need of a transplant, and can't afford it. The gift of the minimal education these few girls will get at that school can't compare to the gift of life for just a handful. There are so many places in your own country that your money would work miracles. Stop worrying about getting your puss plastered on every channel and celebrity magazine, and start REALLY looking into what good your money can do! Try helping a soldier that was maimed in Iraqu and can't work anymore for a change. After all, aren't they the ones that fought for YOUR freedom? GET A CLUE YOU BITCH!

Allred Tree

Did Stedman attend the grand opening? Cling-along Gail? Oprah is just trying to out-do Brad, Angelina and Madonna and it is very obvious. These girls do not need a yoga studio, beauty shop or 5000 thread count sheets. Oprah is NUTS IMO! She was probably in South Africa shopping for some gold or diamonds for herself! Or maybe she bought these girls some nice gold pens and pencils to do their homework with! I hope the parents keep a close eye on Oprahs Compound . What is she going to do when one of her little protoges starts "acting out" and gets preggo?
