Never Mind Rotten's Brutality

6/9/2008 6:09 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

The Sex Pistols showed up in Vegas over the weekend to play and party, seemingly ignorant of the brutal lawsuit allegations -- and we were there.

Johnny and his pistols were firing all night at Carey Hart's new club Wasted Space at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino.

The Sex Pistols were the Sex Pistols before Sid Vicious so why not now?
Glen Matlock was the original bassist, and was replaced by Sid Vicious, and in fairness, I think that any talent that Sid had was ruined by the drugs and towards the end was more or less about keeping up his image, and it's sad that it ended the way that it did....
So basically, the line up is back to how it was in '76/77, so why not play without sid?

my follow up seems to have been eaten, so:
I wrote originally from memory. I did a quick check. CBGB opened in 1973--it was renamed/rebranded by its owner at that time. Hell and Verlaine started the Neon Boys in 1972 and lasted to 1973 when they reformed as Television. Television began its CBGB stay in 1974. I thought I had a reference to the Neon Boys playing CBGB but I can't find it, so I retract it. Certainly Hell played prior to 1974--there is a recording of some Neon Boys stuff out there. The Pistols did form in 1975, so I stand corrected there too. There was a predecessor to the Pistols, but it wasn't really a "punk" band. It was more a straightforward rock band, with the core of what would be the Pistols sound. The Ramones did play in 1974. I suspect not very well. And my basic point still stands--Malcolm picked up the punk aesthetic in New York from Hell (while managing the death of the New York Dolls), brought it to London, and applied it to the Pistols--mostly as a marketing tool. And this is not to diminish what the Pistols did--I like them a lot, and I respect pretty much everything Rotten has done since, especially metal box. But the whole Pistols started punk thing was really more that they got major press first.
