"X Factor" Contestant

Redemption Tale Includes

Brushes with the Law

9/25/2011 6:00 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Simon Cowell isn't the only judge "X Factor" contestant Chris Rene has faced in his life -- TMZ has learned Rene was busted twice for drugs ... before he finally found sobriety.

According to police records, Rene was busted in January 2007 for possession of a controlled substance (meth). The case was dropped in 2008 after Rene completed a diversion program.

Rene's drug history goes all the way back to 2002. According to law enforcement sources, Rene was popped in West Hollywood in 2002 for felony possession of cocaine. That case was dismissed after he served probation.

Last week on "X Factor" ... Simon put Chris through to the next round -- provided he "stays on the right track."

So far, so good.

This dude has a real chance to win. There is few talented people and all the time is being spent on rejects and ridicule acts. Its obvious whos going all the way to the final groups.

I thought this guy was GREAT! His past is just that, the past. He is obviously trying to better his life now, and I think it is awesome that he has the chance to provide a better life for his son. While he will have a rough road ahead of him, as recovery is a war...I wish him the best!

You can make it Chris, your talent is awe inspiring, keep up the AMAZING work!

Did TMZ learn about this by watching the show? He was pretty honest about his drug abuse and his jail times. This is really a non-story. He said he wants to be a better person. Shame on TMZ for acting like this is some kind of big scoop.

You never see people that never did drugs or have run ins with the law get celebrated for making the right decisions in life. It seems to be respected you need to be a low life that cleans up his act.

This guy said it all during the show so layoff TMZ. He's trying to make a better life for his kid and himself, I'm sure he'll be an inspiration to others who've taken the wrong path in life. He did a great job with the song he wrote, and all the judges agreed that he has talent. You're awesome Chris, and don't let anyone tell you different!
