A heavily armed gunman opened fire in the middle of a packed midnight screening of "The Dark Knight Rises" ... killing at least a dozen moviegoers and reportedly wounding at least 50 others (including a 3-month-old baby) in Aurora, Colorado.

The suspect has been identified as 24-year-old James Holmes from Aurora, CO.

Cops say Holmes was wearing a bulletproof vest, riot helmet and a gas mask when he entered the Century 16 Movie Theater through an emergency exit and began randomly firing at movie patrons. Witnesses say he tossed tear gas into the crowd before he started shooting.

Police arrested Holmes in the movie theater parking lot -- and federal agents evacuated his apartment building --after he "made a statement about explosives" in the building (see below).

After a thorough sweep of the complex, officials determined the building was safe.

Holmes reportedly used 4 guns during the shooting -- a rifle, a shotgun, a handgun and another firearm that's being compared to an AK-47. Cell phone video taken from inside the lobby of the movie theater showed the chaos following the shooting.

One witness tells CNN Holmes did not resist arrest when cops moved in -- "He did not put up a fight."

At this point, police say there is no evidence of a second gunman.

Hundreds of police and FBI agents have already been assigned to the investigation.

A 15-year-old witness told CNN he was able to escape the theater when the gunman stopped firing to reload one of his guns.

I think this is a wake up call, that we can't just sit back and relax. Things are always going to happen, its part of the world.

I predict you'll find Holmes has a developmental disorder like high functioning Asperger's, with OCD, and delusional thinking, and a preference for solitary activity. His mother had inferred in a statement earlier today that her son was capable of such a massacre as the one we learned about today.

Mr. Bill

This was the act of someone out of control; it is almost impossible to prevent acts of terror like this one. So in the heat of the moment if we consider stricter gun laws; it would stand to reason to also consider restrictions on medical students.

ok so I did a little checking and not since Abraham Lincoln and then the Nazi's mass killings in theatre has there been a problem with killings in Theatre. I have always thought it was pretty easy to bring in food
but i think putting alarms on the doors and maybe a metal detector and we are back to normal behavior.
Movies are meant to take you away from reality but the reality is you should always be aware of your surroundings.

Please stop the "we need more gun laws" talk. It was already illegal for Holmes to carry his guns in a theater. Did that stop him? Explosives are illegal too and he had that as well. Don't want to think what he would of done in place of a gun. This is another mental issue. When do we address that growing problem? And how? By disarming all normal people? Its a shame every anti-gun organization trys to take advantage of scared unknowledgable people during a crissis.

It's 9;30 on a Friday night here in Ohio and I just found out about it a couple of hours ago. I am SOOOOO sorry for all the people involved in this HORRIBLE HORRIBLE tragedy. I couldn't imagine being in that kind of situation and I hope that me and any body I know doesn't either. My hearts go out to those who have lossed loved ones and those that are injured. I hope they have a speedy recovery.
I also offer my sympathy for the shooter's family. How hard this must be for them too. He must have been really messed up to do this. God, this is awful.

It really is pathetic.....the excited states of America....acting shocked, surprised and confused......are we really surprised when the commentary is...."we are very proud at how quickly we respond to mass shooting situations"

How about....how the hell does a kid get hold of an arsenal that would have made Gaddafi proud....including 6,000 bullets, and act out yet another Columbine scenario.
Frankly, your country is pathetic and your NRA dominates the sane members of the USA who surely cannot condone the access to guns etc, which end up being a major destructive force on so many innocent families.
"The right to bear arms".....excuse me

This person appears to be suffering from schizophrenia, however, there''s speculation that he asked a friend of his before the shooting if they would come visit him in prison. Perhaps this indicates that he knew that his actions would be wrong. He also studied neurological disorders. Could he have studied them to learn how to mimic them? This is something investigators will have to determine. But I think we can all agree on one point: that this is a very sad day indeed. Know that the victims and their families will be in my thoughts and prayers tonight.
