So Which Springfield is "Simpson's" Springfield?

3/11/2007 4:01 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Fans of "The Simpsons" have wondered for years which real-life Springfield is the model for the Springfield in the long-running show -- and now, once and for all, they're going to find out. Sort of.

20th Century Fox has challenged each of the 16 Springfields around the country to compete for the honor of hosting the premiere of "The Simpsons Movie" in July. TMZ spoke to several Springfields, and some of them think they have a legitimate claim at the title. Springfield, Illinois, for instance, tells us that it's got big power plants right in the city, a school that looks a lot like where Bart and Lisa go to school, and even a donut plant.

Springfield, Ore. thinks it's in the running because creator Matt Groening hails from Portland, and Springfield, Mass. cites the fictional Mayor Joe Quimby's Mass-inflected accent as proof.

Other Springfields, on the other hand, might need a little help. In fact, at three of the Springfields we talked to (and who will remain stateless to protect their chances of winning), the press relations rep said they'd never even seen the show. D'oh!

it is the correct distance from arlen texas!

AND there is a Shelbyville right next to it. Capital City (Lansing) is also the correct distance away.

Of course it is Springfield, Illinois. We have our own power plant (which has a Mr. Burns whom has long been the Head of Finance, Doh!!!), Springfield High, a doughnut plant, we are next to Shelbyville, are the state capital and so on and so on!!! No other Springfield can come close!!!!

I say Springfield Mo....because that's where Brad Pitt is from, the Simpson's could run into Brad and Ange while he's visiting family. Plus I'm from Mo as well:)

ok....just had to say something. that is B.S. because in the episode of the simpson's true hollywood story - it was finally said that Springfield is a quite southern missouri town....it took all us simpson fanactics forever to figure that one out .....but the claim has already been made!

i see that people are saying that the episode said kentucky, but i swear it said missouri....

Rome, in SoCal - I agree that the Simpsons takes place in Cali. If you live in Cali, you do notice the nuances or obvious back drops.

It is definately Springfield, IL -- not only for the reasons mentioned in the article, but it ALSO has a Shelbyville nearby, and I personally have family with the surname Simpson who live there!

Its Springfield, Illinois because of the reasons already stated and we also had Evergreen Terrace when the show first started and through over half of the seasons. And Springfield, Illinois also has a Shelbyville nearby.
