Reading is Fundamental, But ...

Poll results released this week say that one in four US adults did not read a single book in the last year.

Thank you, America!

1. Maybe its the nerd in me, but I found that poll so sad. American society is quickly losing its status in the world. But what can you expect when our headlines are about Britney's latest mental breakdown, Lindsey's latest drunken escapade and Paris' EVERYTHING. Really sad.

2. Ummm... Paris read THE book while in jail - the Bible. Can't you see the positive effects it has had on her life? The fact that she can't remember anything in it isn't pertinent.

11. Love your choice of this picture of the Three Stooges to represent illiterate America -- brilliant!

12. Paris Hilton is certainly the sane one among the three.

She is doing a little charity work, building her businesses more, doing a few movies, and generally living a great life.

After all is said and done, living well is the best revenge.

13. All you have to do is read many of the comments on TMZ to realize that America is comprised of a great many functional illiterates. They say things like, "I seen" instead of "I saw," "They ought to give them kids" instead of "those kids," and "he don't" instead of "he doesn't."

Very few know the difference between their, they're and there, and even more don't know the difference between a possessive and a plural (hint: plurals don't use apostrophes...or as TMZers write..."apostrophe's."

I keep thinking of George Bush's quote: "Is our children learning?"

It's okay to talk about celebrities in this forum AND still be literate. The two aren't mutually exclusive.

15. Those likeliest to read religious books included older and married women, lower earners, minorities, lesser educated people, Southerners, rural residents, Republicans and conservatives. [How could a less educated person read the bible and religious articles? And aren't people staying away from the communist spew.. nasty-ugly liberal stuff they have out there that they don't want to read? That makes them wiser and selective} And all these young ladies have been photographed reading, and religious items too, so what's with using them for examples?
