DEA -- What Were THEY Smoking?!

8/7/2008 9:40 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Heath ledgerSources connected with the Heath Ledger investigation say the Drug Enforcement Administration set a new low for starf**king.

People who have talked to TMZ off the record are now willing to go on record -- still anonymously -- about one of the most bizarre DEA power grabs ever.

How's this for starters ... no one we've spoken with connected with the case can point to a single DEA case where a massive investigation was launched over an accidental death in which no criminality was even hinted at.

We know the DEA went all over the country, in one case tracking down a guy in California who smoked a joint with Ledger in the '90s, telling him he had to testify in a Grand Jury probe. And how's this for chutzpah ... the DEA told the guy he would have to pay his own way to NYC to testify before the Grand Jury!

In another case, the DEA was nosing around a film set in Arizona looking for people who had information about possible Ledger drug connections.

We know the NYPD was furious at the DEA for making an immediate power grab to control what should have been a simple case. NYPD cops felt "humiliated" by what one source called "utter disrespect" on the part of the DEA.

As for the U.S. Attorney's office, we're told officials say they were appalled at what they felt was a "bogus" investigation. Our sources say the U.S. Attorney finally had enough and shut down the entire investigation -- an investigation the DEA desperately wanted to go before a grand jury.

It all seems like a waste of time for them to just stop the investigation because people are ticked off. If anyone feels that there is foul play involved then an investigation should continue regardless of WHATEVER celebrities are involved. It is fishy that MK was the first one called - why??? That's the burning question for everyone.

But doctors and others over prescribing, etc. need to be checked out as does the investigation need to continue otherwise all that money was wasted for nothing when something good could come out of it like possibly saving another life.

Screw those celebrities and their tons of money who want to stay out of it and not be "involved" when to some point they were. If they were not they would not have been #1 to call and not had their personal security team there in a red hot minute to handle the situation - why to cover their asses. She's guilty of something otherwise she would be willing to say ok let's go...let's do this I have nothing to hide but she hid and threw a freaking fit. Whine little girl whine you got your way and hopefully next time you won't.

#22 -- they should use words we Gentiles know too.

Why hasn't the "entertainment authority" TMZ looked into the possibility that nobody in Hollyweird want's to dig up info on Ledger -- especially when one of the biggest-grossing movies of all time (shocker: with Heath!) is currently in theaters?

Money talks...and me thinks the DEA wasn't getting anyone but the Troll to spill their guts.

Maybe someone in Heath's family is instigating the investigation. Sometimes people can't just accecpt that a loved one was a common drug addict. They want someone to pay. Remember Carroll O'Connor's son? Carroll hunted down one of the drug dealers who supplied him with drugs after his son got tired of being a crackhead loser and committed suicide. They don't want the drug addict to take responsibility for their own actions.

DEA probably got involved bc of that video that showed Ledger doing coke that ET had...maybe this investigation is actually tied to something larger like taking down a supplier to Hollywood. Maybe if Mary Kate actually cooperated right away, the DEA wouldn't have to waste its time and our taxpayer money digging around for stuff.

If TMZ had the whole story....you would understand

TMZ is horrible. Heath was really a very young man and he should not be dead. Maybe if TMZ did not focus on making loser's stars because of their loser behavior, people would strive to have better lives. I'm sure his baby girl will be happy to know that the DEA tried to find out who supplied her daddy with the drugs that killed him. Do you people just totally forget these people have families.

16. I would like to say, however, to the dismay of apparently 91% of you who voted that this is a case of "Starf**ing", that prescription drug fraud is a serious problem in this country. Again, Heath Ledger died of drugs, some of which he wasn't prescribed. Someone (most likely Mary Kate Olsen in my opinion) gave it to him, and that person could have gotten it fraudulently (whether phony prescriptions, smuggling, whatever...).....

Problem is that high profile celebrities have considerably more resources (aka., money) to obtain them. I do not disagree at all with this investigation....just my views....

You are an idiot... Heath was out of the country filming and was back in NY for 2 days. Mary Kate wasn't even in NY she was in Calif. She never saw Heath. He could of got his drugs from someone on the film set or anyone out of the country. She said she did not know where he got the drugs, had not even seen him and it is slander of you to insinuate that she gave them to him. If Heath wanted drugs I am sure with his money and connections he would of found them from many sources. The Attorney General was right to shut this useless witch hunt down, the damage they did to Mary Kates name when she was no where around is inexcusable.

Don't you mean to say, did Heath forget he has a family? Or did Michelle think twice about having a baby by a drug addict whose days are numbered?

You're kidding, right # 33? She did cooperate. The NYPD did a full investigation. Nothing was found. Nothing other than he accidentally killed himself. I keep asking this question, but everyone just skirts the facts: she was 3,000 miles away and he was using prescriptioni meds long before he met MK. But notice how in our society, surely, the tiny FEMALE, WEALTHY, WHITE actress mus have been involved. She was not.

& Maybe SOMEONE...like the DRUG ENFORCEMENT AGENCY....should investigate the idiot doctors who knowingly prescribe what some feel are the most addicting drugs ever created, legal OPIUM, to anyone who walks in their office, without hesitation, even to those who dont have or have never had any illness or reason to take it. DOCTORS NEED TO BE MADE TO ANSWER TO SOMEONE FOR THEIR SHARE IN CREATING THIS HUGE EPIDEMPIC. Americans are now hooked on more prescribed drugs, primarily painkillers, than probably all street drugs combined - look at the statitics - death certificates NATIONWIDE showing "accidental" overdose of painkillers/narcotics as having quadrupled in just the last couple of years. Prescription drug abuse & addiction is now MUCH MORE PREVELANT than street or illegal drugs. These drugs are so easily accessible & cheap when covered by insurance. If it takes more deaths of more celebrities for the government to focus on it, so be it, even though that is horribly unfortunate. For the everyday families losing members who mean a million times more to them than the death of 1 or 2 celebrities, there loss is just as tragic. Heath was NOT a celebrity to his family, he was a son, father, brother, just like everyday families losing members EVERY SINGLE DAY & DEA/government doesnt seem to give a damn. Maybe now they will?? (we all know they wont) While it is not totally the drug pushing doctors fault for addiction or when an addict o'd's - they have a huge amount of responsibilty when they CONSTANTLY KNOWINGLY prescribe highly addictive drugs to people who dont need them. They should bear some sort of criminal liability when it can be proven they knowingly aided an addict in obtaining unnecessary/unneeded drugs. If more doctors were held accountable for their irresponsible behavior, maybe they would realize the POSITIVE impact they could have, instead of being a provider. They clearly dont have their patients best interest in mind, only theirs. So if it was made clear to them that it was in their best interest to prescribe these drugs more responsibly, maybe they would be more inclined to do so.

To Jake

Are you retarded ? Second rate actor ? Lmao. 2 years ago The New York times compared him to a young Marlon Brando. He has 2 performances on the AFI top 100 performaces in cinema hostory list and his performance as The Joker will probably join the list. Plus The dark knight has gotten nearly perfect reviews.

Go watch Brokeback mountain, Candy, Lords of Logtown, The four fathers, The Dark knight, I'm not there, Ned Kelly, Two hands. Even Chris Nolan and Terry Gilliam and Paul Haggis(3 top directors) thought he was excellent.

Drugs should not be illegal. If somebody is taking drugs, they have a health problem, they're not criminals. If God's Herb was widely available everywhere, there'd be fewer people dropping all these heavy painkillers and sedatives. Ledger should have taken a month or two to unwind in Amsterdam at the Grey Area and Greenhouse and Barneys.
