Coldplay Hits Back -- We Stole Nothing

Chris MartinColdplay is finally striking back at the guitarist who claims the band's song "Viva La Vida" is a rip-off with this simple message -- tough luck.

In a statement to TMZ, the band says:

"With the greatest possible respect to Joe Satriani, we have now unfortunately found it necessary to respond publicly to his allegations. If there are any similarities between our two pieces of music, they are entirely coincidental, and just as surprising to us as to him. Joe Satriani is a great musician, but he did not write the song Viva La Vida. We respectfully ask him to accept our assurances of this, and wish him well with all future endeavors. Coldplay."

18. "...we have now unfortunately found it necessary to respond publicly to his allegations..."

Sorry to have disturbed you.

My prediction is that the case will proceed and Satriani will prevail.

19. To everyone who believes Coldplay stole the song: Chris Martin has joked in several interviews that he very influenced by other bands and rips them off. However, he is honest about it and gives them their due. In fact, on their X&Y album, Coldplay even asked permission from another band to use a bit of their music. So do your really think that he would start lying about such things now? I think too many people are letting their dislike of Coldplay form their opinion on this matter.

20. well...let's look at the facts....there are actually two songs that Coldplay used as "inspiration" to write their song, in one they use Satriani's riff, and the second they use the song's melody - almost exactly. TMZ, there are two active lawsuits on this. I have listened to Coldplay's song alongside both other songs. No doubt it was pinched. No way it's a coincidence. The melody is exact. Sorry you bunch of wankers. You ripped someone off. Sadly it was the only decent melody you have ever put on on of your releases, and it wasn't even yours. Losers. BTW - in London these guys are considered the British equivalent of Backstreet Boys.....

21. just give joe a writing credit. I'm sure they didn't knowingly plagiarize his song, but viva has almost the same melody as joe's.

23. This isnt Queen vs vinilla ice...
These two tracks are completely different. Alot of people on these comments obviously dont like coldplay and thats ok. The value of the band is deemed by their marketability and 'sales'. so let the chips fall where they may on that note...

the topic at hand. isnt your opinion of the band. the topic is did they steal the song... the result is pretty evident that they didnt. good luck in court trying to make the case that it is the same.

24. ...."good luck in court trying to make the case that it is the same."

Really? The odds on this page says the jury finds Coldplay guilty 7-1

25. "the result is pretty evident that they didnt" Did you not listen to the songs? Satch has been making hit rocrds since 1986. Learn about music, not bi-sexual brits before you post again. You have shamed Texas.

26. Howard Stern, or probably Fred, played the two songs together and they are identical.
They spend about 20 minutes listening to both songs and there is NO way is was a coincidence.
At least admit that you heard it and liked it, but maybe forgot you'd heard it.
Pay up. He can't have much money left.

27. Funny all the haters, your saying a band that has sold over 40 million units worldwide and sells out pretty much every concert they perform sucks???

Yeah, how about we hate on the beatles because they may not be a band you like and say they suck also. Wow, you people are complete morons.

Keep making excuses, them and their fans are the ones smiling, laughing, and enjoying life past you while you walk by with your headphones staring at the ground grumbling "I listen to real music" as if your some sort of elitist towards what music should be. Poor excuses for music fans.

29. What are the odds that the same person is posting over and over on this topic. We get it...you don't like Coldplay but a LOT of people do. And there's a reason...they're good!

Posted at 8:19PM on Dec 9th 2008 by Don\\\'t see it

30. Maybe Chris Martin slutty wife Gwyneth was listening to Joe Satriani, becuase she's tired of Cold play's crap, while he was asleep (Partridge Family episode)
