Come on, guys. I'm glad the Prez wasn't hurt, but the intention of a shoe-thrower in Arab culture is like a rotten-tomato thrower here - not to maim, but to express contempt. Hitting the person isn't necessary or intended. That's not an act of terrorism, it's a clear statement that was instantly understood by everybody else in Iraq. If nobody explained that to President Bush, then he has terrible advisers. I'm sure his "jokes" about it, expressing bafflement about why anybody would throw a shoe, went over like the proverbial lead balloon in Iraq, just reminding everybody once again how clueless Americans can be.

Apparently a shoemaker in Turkey is claiming those shoes were his design, in a line he introduced 10 years ago. The incident has meant a big boost in sales (especially in Iraq), which tells you how people really feel about it.

Honestly, if you're going to bomb, invade, and occupy a country - you should at least learn more about its culture.
