As a very proud southerner, I find this very offensive. Why do you assume this if someone uses the King's English they have to be a stupid hick? This seems to be one of the few "acceptable" prejudices left. I thought everyone is trying to be "tolerant" of everyone that is different from themselves.
Why does Hollywood and other narrow-minded people still think it is ok to be prejudiced against a whole segment of the population? You small-minded twits like to make fun of people who are different from you and you like to be condescending and act like we Southerners are all ignorant, racist, non-progressive rednecks who have no class. Yes, the South does have people like this, but so does every state in the U.S. You people need to grow up and learn a little about the culture you are mocking. Did it ever occur to the people in the northern part of the USA or the East or West coast of this great country that your accent may sound funny or odd to southerners? However it seems Southerners have the better manners and do not constantly mimic in a mocking manner your accents. And there is nothing to be ashamed of if you're country despite the constant portrayal of "hicks" and "rednecks" in a very derogatory manner. Farmers, Ranchers and Fishermen (mainly those folks that live in the rural areas) are the reason you have food in your grocery store.
