I feel bad for Kirsten! That had to be a horribly uncomfortable position to be put in. You can tell she's sitting there wondering if she should just get up and walk away.

Come on. He made a joke and it went too far and ended up with not being funny at all. After all English is not his mother tongue (Danish). I don’t believe he’s a Nazi sympathizer. He was raised by a Jewish man. Who he thought was his father and who he still wanted to think of as his father even after he learned that that man wasn’t his biological father.

When that Aflac (2nd biggest insurance company in Japan) comedian made jokes about the thousands of poor Japanese who died in their earthquake tsunami, he got fired. Nobody hit him and nobody imprisoned him.

When this Nazi loving director makes jokes about loving Hitler and wanting to make a film about "The Final Solution" genocide to kill all the Jews, he didn't get fired. He was just told to leave the festival's premises and not come back. Nobody hit him and nobody imprisoned him.

When you make tasteless and offensive comments or "jokes" about thousands or millions of people suffering and dying, sometimes there are business related consequences for your actions.

This hate-filled jerk, Lars von Trier, doesn't deserve any sympathy. But he'll get some from some naive apologists for his actions and from some people who also admire Hitler and the Nazis in spite or because of what they did.

When I travel on the german highways, I also understand Hitler's vision. THEY HAVE NO SPEED LIMITS. You will only know what true freedom is once you have put your car beyond 150 mph on a public road.

I do know that he did a lot wrong. He created the worlds first anti-smoking campaign so the young german could not enjoy tobacco. This damage to young sole was fortunately undone by your armed forces when they occupied Germany and learned the teenagers to smoke again.

Of course you should zoome out and not judge him on his visionar work in transportation but rather on the burdens like the anti-smoking campaigns he put on people - both domestic and abroad.

That is what Trier did forget.

Anyone out there who thinks this was funny, should go back and learn history, this man is a disgrace, and the fact Kirsten Dunst sat there and smirked instead of getting up and walking off makes herself as much an idiot as he is, this was outrageous. He and his film should be banned worldwide. Is there no one anywhere that has any empathy for people or is there absolutely no decency jor flippin' common sense left anywhere in the world?

@Peter Sc:

If you think Hitler's greatest evil was an anti-smoking campaign, you should get yourself some psychological counseling or some proper medications for your mind because you're not well.

If you're trying to be funny, stick to your day job, you'll never make it as a comedian and your alleged sense of humor will do you as much good as von Trier's did him at Cannes.

Hint: Hitler's and the Nazis' killing of millions of people in Europe in WW2 was their greatest evil. Maybe you played hooky that day at school and missed that history lesson.

Poor Kirsten, you can clearly see the agony in her face.

@TMZ: You pronounced Kirsten Dunst's name wrong.
Its not pronounced "Kursten Donced". The first name is pronounced "Keersten" and the last name "Dunst" (the u sounds like the oo in "foot").
This is what Mr. Dunst tried to make clear in multiple interviews but noone seems to listen.

Pro Us: The millions killed in camps invented by the British in south Africa was evil. It was not as many as they killed in camps in the Sovjet Union. It was not as many as they killed by starvation in China in the 1950's and 1960...'s but it was still evil.

The idea of improvement of the races - an idea he took from the doctors in both my country Denmark and the United States where people suffering by mental illnesses were operated so they couldn't reproduce and exposed to operations where they were live Guinea pigs was evil because he took them and put them into a large scale operation. But preventing people with mental illnesses from reproducing was a recognized strategy used by medical boards in a lot of countries before WWII.

We do know that it was evil and it was wrong. We have corrected those - to some extend. We still kill minors with mental illnesses through various therapy methods and medications which have not been tested properly before they are used.

The one heritage which we have not corrected is his anti-smoke ideas. That's why it deserves attention.

No you just think you understand Hitler's vision. Much of the conceptual design, and initial construction, was done before Hitler came to power. Hitler did see the value of pressing forward with the project on a somewhat grander scale though i'll admit. Oh and i don't think the lack of a speed limit was Hitler's vision either, but what was already in place when he came to power.

Enjoy the unlimited sections while you can because sooner or later the greenies will have their way and kill the vision of a speed unlimited limited access roadway "for the environment". Damned shame too.

"Nazi Autobahn Propaganda

So how did Hitler and the Nazis manage to take most of the credit for the autobahn they didn't invent? While it is true that about a quarter of Germany's current 11,000 km (6830 mi) autobahn network was originally built during the Third Reich, the early planning and design work was done by others. In 1924 the Studiengesellschaft für den Automobilstraßenbau (Stufa) was founded to begin planning for a German highway network. In 1926 Stufa published an ambitious plan for a 22,500 km German superhighway network. Its work was later taken over by HaFraBa, originally an agency set up to design a north-south autobahn that would link the Hanseatic cities (Bremen, Hamburg, Lübeck), Frankfurt, and Basel. As late as 1930 the National Socialist (Nazi) party helped vote down a HaFraBa autobahn proposal presented to the Reichstag. Ironically, it was the work of HaFraBa that allowed Hitler and his chief civil engineer Dr. Fritz Todt to proceed with autobahn construction in 1933, the year Hitler and the Nazis came to power. Hitler quickly realized the propaganda value he could get from promoting the autobahn. He and the Nazis found it easy to take credit for the earlier work of others and make it seem that it was all the Führer's own idea.

The term Autobahn was first coined by HaFraBa's public relations head, Kurt Kaftan, in 1928. The word also was used as the title of the organization's official magazine.
Another myth related to "Hitler's autobahn" is that of the employment benefits it provided. The main reason the autobahn had difficulty getting off the ground prior to the Nazi era was the worldwide depression and hyperinflation in Germany. Hitler promoted building the autobahn for the jobs it would create, but in reality autobahn construction never employed more than a small fraction of the millions of German unemployed. Before the war forced the Nazis to abandon all autobahn construction in late 1941, Russian prisoners of war were doing much of the work."

The difference between the German Nazis and the Russians or the Chinese was that the German Nazis murdered millions of people who were not Germans, like Poles, Russians, Romanians, Hungarians and people from other European countries as well as hundreds of thousands of their own German people, whereas the Soviets under Stalin murdered or hastened the deaths of millions of their own Russian people and other people in the Soviet Union like Ukrainians under the Communal Farm movement in particular, and the Chinese under Mao murdered millions or hastened the deaths of millions of Chinese people. Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge murdered millions of his own Cambodian people.

The British did set up concentration camps in the South African territories during the Boer war and caused the deaths of tens of thousands of Boers (Dutch people) there through starvation, lack of medicine and unsanitary conditions, etc. They also poisoned the lands and water wells of the Boer villages. There were atrocities on both sides of that war as well.

Hitler, Stalin, Mao and Pol Pot were all despicably and horrendously evil but of them, only Hitler started a World War to try to conquer first Europe and then the rest of the world. Only Hitler set up a system of concentration camps with gas extermination chambers and ovens to burn the bodies in order to murder millions of people on an almost assembly line like basis in order to commit genocide against Jews and to a lesser but still terrible extent against Slavic people of Eastern Europe, Gypsies, Gays, Communists, Socialists, democrats and anyone his Nazi party considered "defective" or "unAryan".

And Hitler didn't only sterilize mentally retarded or mentally disturbed people. He had Nazi doctors perform on a massive scale gruesome, sickening medical experiments on civilian prisoners just like the doctors of Imperial Japan did during WW2 to the British, American, Chinese, Phillippine etc. soldiers they captured. Dr. Mengele was not alone performing those war crimes on behalf of the Nazis. The Allies did not commit war crimes on anywhere near the scale that Nazi Germany or Imperial Japan did in WW2, though it is arguable that the night-time fire bombing of civilian centers in Cologne, Dresden and other cities in retaliation for the fire bombing of London and other British cities were war crimes as well.
