Roger Ebert BLASTS Ryan Dunn for Drunk Driving

6/20/2011 11:43 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Ryan Dunn hasn't even been dead for a day yet -- and film critic Roger Ebert is already ripping the late "Jackass" star for boozing before getting behind the wheel  ... tweeting, "Friends don't let jackasses drink and drive."

Ryan Dunn Drunk
TMZ broke the story ... Dunn's drinking buddy claims Ryan had at least 3 beers and 3 shots before hitting the road in his Porsche.

Obviously, Ebert has a point -- but we gotta ask ...

If he had been alone in the car, then this would be too soon. Instead, he had a passenger and was out drinking with friends before the crash. You don't have to be legally drunk to have alcohol affect your ability to drive. Even a single drink has been shown to decrease your reaction time. It's sad that he took someone out with him when he made the very jackass-ish decision to drink and then drive.

Ebert's right. Enabler's let enabler's drink and drive. True friendship is a beautiful caring thing.Where people look out for what's best for one another.

Too soon? Absolutely not!! Its too late! If in fact he was drunk at the time of the accident, he should burn in hell. He took an innocent life and destroyed a nice car and public property. Hope he had good insurance, because his family is gonna get sued big by the other persons family. We all know that drinking and driving is bad, yet people continue to do it. Maybe we need to bring back prohibition in the US to keep idiots from hurting themselves and others.

Brad Brad

Wow..At least have some f***en respect. The man just passed for gods sake!

Curious Curious

Is Ebert ripping Ryan or is he ripping the folks that let Ryan drive after drinking? Seems to me he's ripping the friends of the Jackass star for letting him drive after drinking. Open to interpretation?

That may be the case, But come on the poor guy has not even been dead a day, and the fact that we don't even know his blood level yet, what a ass have a heart

He is right!! And it's not too soon....more people need to hear this before they end up dead or killing an innocent person!!!! There is no excuse, ever for this!!!!!

Ebert is being his usually witty self - his comment makes him sound like a jackass - that's the point - it's an homage to Ryan Dunn. Get it?

Live like a jackass - die like one. Too bad he took an innocent with him though. Would be nice if people learned for it, but they won't.

Roger is right, another idiot who wasted his life and caused the death of another! Sorry for his family and friends who have to suffer the lose of this moron who didn't take his life very seriously to take chances with it as often as he did. You live on the edge, you eventually fall off and he took another idiot who was probably drunk as well with him. He obviously didn't take the keys from Dunn but got into the car with him. Just a waste all around!!!

Go ahead and call me a jerk, but several facts are present in this scenario:

1. He had been drinking
2. He drove after drinking
3. He had friends at the bar who let him drive
4. He had a bartender/waiter who knew how many drinks he'd had
5. No one took his car keys away from him
6. He's dead
7. His passenger is dead
8. Death is always sad

BUT - he drank and drove. Ultimately HIS choice. Ultimately HIS fate.

Too bad the passenger had to die too, but he also has major responsibility as HE/SHE got in the car with a drunk driver.

Passenger could have taken keys away. Passenger could have refused to get in the car.

Final opportunity for bartender/waiter/friends/passenger: they could have called the cops on him. Might have saved his life, might not have.

But he did this to himself. Too damn bad. He could have prevented this very easily.

DON'T DRINK AND DRIVE. PREVENT FRIENDS FROM DRIVING AFTER DRINKING.

PERIOD.

No sympathy for him at all and none for his passenger either.

Such a waste of life.

His family and passenger's family, now those are the ones I feel sorry for.

Yes, I'm a hard nose. Get over it.

Even if he wasn't a 0.08, he was likely still impaired. He shouldn't have been driving after leaving a bar.

Excuse me I have never been a an of these shows or movies, BUT I do believe NO ONE made the other person get in the car with Ryan Dunn. If he was drunk(it has not been proven) then the other person is an idiot for getting in the vehicle with an intoxicated person. No one held a gun to this persons head! So instead of crucifying Ryan Dunn how about showing some sympathy for the families of both people involved

Whether the comment was posted 2 weeks or 2 secs after the accident. There is no excuse for drinking and getting behind the wheel. That "jackass" could of killed innocent people.
Nobody would have been arguing Ebert's comment then.

First, observing Ryan's personality, he would have LOVED that tweet. But on a more serious note, I dont think Ebert "blasted" anyone. If he did, it wasnt Ryan. That comment was directed toward his friends and it was warranted. It might be harsh because someone just died but evidently it needs to be yelled and screamed. What is really harsh is that two people who are admired and loved are dead. They didnt just die of alcohol poisoning. They died in a nasty crash that finished in a fire-ball so severe that the only way we know what Ryan was driving is because TMZ said so. Did you all look at that pic below? It gave me chills. We can only hope and pray that these two were dead or at least unconscious before the fire. I support Ebert's tweet. It's not too soon. Unfortunately, it's too late.

"Dunn's drinking buddy claims Ryan had at least 3 beers and 3 shots before hitting the road in his Porsche."
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Operative phrase here: "at least" (3 beers and 3 shots)...

It's simple...you drink...you drive...you crash...people die!

His "friends" should have confiscated his car keys and either called him a cab or drove him home...
with friends like these who needs the Grim Reaper?

For people to get on Roger Ebert for saying THE TRUTH.. You're really naive.

Roger Ebert has gone through HELL for the past few years due to thyroid cancer. He has undergone massive amounts of treatments, as well as multiple surgeries and has survived.

He is a survivor.

I am sure it ticks him off to see 20/30-somethings waste their lives away doing stupid stuff.

At 34 years o****e - Ryan was old enough to know better than to drink and drive.

Let this be a lesson.

Drinking and driving can be DEADLY.

Ebert has been through enough in his life and has the balls to say what a lot of other celebrities are probably thinking...

Perhaps Ryan's friends who witnessed him drinking excessively should feel guilty for allowing him to drive in that condition.

The bottom line is this -- drinking and driving kills. Sometimes it is the offender who dies.. and sometimes it is an innocent person (like in the case of Lane Garrison and Amy Locane)..

No Excuse

Of course he was drunk, you are stupid to believe he wasn't. He lived by the seat of his pants, obviously confirmed by his career path. He drove reckless and took the life of the innocent passenger and his own. Tragic, yes, but he was an idiot for driving fast
