Turn Women Into 'Mean Girls'

10/14/2011 8:30 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Girl Scouts of the USA is warning its legions ... reality television shows are turning young women into "mean girls."

The Girl Scouts Research Institute conducted a study on reality TV ... and concluded, "teen girls who regularly view reality TV accept and expect a higher level of drama, aggression, and bullying in their own lives, and measure their worth primarily by their physical appearance."

A rep for the Institute also noted that reality TV shows "more frequently portrays girls and women in competition with one another rather than in support or collaboration.  This perpetuates a 'mean-girl' stereotype and normalizes this behavior among girls."

The Girl Scouts did not name any of the shows involved in their study.

But it wasn't all bad news ... the GSRI says 68% of girls surveyed agree reality shows "make me think I can achieve anything in life" and 48% believe they "help me realize there are people out there like me."

The Girl Scouts note, "We don't want girls to avoid reality TV, but want them, along with their parents, to know what they are getting into when they watch it."

So we gotta ask ...

Reality TV, social networks, YouTube & an endless stream of gossip sites cashing in on the eager trainwrecks.....

they ALL encourage people to dream up ways to grab negative attention & the spotlight.

Once the media & the public stop focusing on the FOOLS in this world & start focusing on those humans who are actually WORTHY of attention, the idiots will fade into the background & the fringes of society where they belong.

Where are the role models? They are quietly going about their business while the IDIOTS are getting all the attention. Sad. Sad. Sad.

Hey Now

Isn't that the pot calling the kettle black for TMZ to report on this? Doesn't TMZ make mean comments and judge women by their looks every day?????

I don't think their study reveal anything new. There are several mediums within the entertainment industry that set women back 50 years. Reality t.v. being one to the scag mags at the checkout in your local grocery stores. All of them deal in the lowest common stereotypes about women in general. That we are catty, mean, jealous, and gossips who get off on other people's troubles. Some of us are just those things, but a lot of us aren't. The women tha*****ch these shows are probably bitchy drama queens in everyday life and feel validated by watching reality crap on t.v. As a result their daughters are watching too and think it's okay to act like a damned fool in public. Mom does it and the women on t.v. do it so it must be okay. For the rest of us women who don't deal in that type of stuff all we can do is just shake our heads and wonder when other women will wake up and realize the damage this type sh** does to the entire gender of women.

Ghost Rider

Reality shows have been bad since Pedro was crying over his peanut butter that puck was eating with his fingers. Women live there lives as though they are stars of something when they are nothing and its getting pretty old.

That's Right

I posted the comment below on a website about three months ago regarding a reality show, which I no longer watch. I still stand by my comment and what a reality show cast member have said. "I don't agree nor approve of rewarding anyone for bad behavior" sadly bad behavior has grown into a form of entertainment and profits millions of dollars and it will continue as long as the ratings are high.
PREVIOUS POST: Learning respect must start in the home. We are not the only influences in our children lives, but we must encourage them to see and flee from the negatives. I can only hope our young girls don’t embrace the bad behavior which is being aired weekly. Open up discussion with the young girls in your lives about respecting others and especially self respect. Show them who are the real role models, not the women who are cursing, getting drunk and falling down and the promiscuous behavior. The real role models is not acting on the big screen or singing on stage. The real role models are the women who have made history in a positive manner, and the average women who wake up every day to put food on the table and clothes on their children backs and a roof over their heads, the women who can feed the entire family with little to no money or help. And the women who take care of everyone else first and don’t regret it. Much respect for the women who stand up for what's right and not afraid to speak up when something is wrong. Teach our young girls that clothes and money don't make you a REAL WOMAN, but how you respect others and yourself can. Selling yourself respect and gossiping about others will not bring you happiness, but living life to the fullest and being unconditionally loved is a pleasure no one can put a price on. The women on these reality shows don't seem happy, although they say they are, but when folks are truly happy they don't have to tell others they are, people will see it.

Almost ALL reality tv is bad for EVERYBODY because it features nothing but the s*** of our society. It's nothing but total losers on these reality shows, it's a wonder they ever caught on!

I get anxiety watching reality shows. Even housewife shows exemplify the cruel jealousy of grown women lashing out at each other. NeNe Leeks, Jill Zarin, Kyle Richards and Carolyn Manzo come to mind. Spewing their malicious jabs at other women as if they were in junior high. It's disgusting and humiliating to watch. Cackling, wise cracking, and disparaging other women behind their backs and screaming at them an inch away from their faces. How have we come to this place? This is where the bully is born and these women revel in making other women's lifes miserable. Then when they've gone too far and the public reacts, they apologize and do it again and again.

I know a girl scout here in South Florida locally who is mean and competitive. Mother thinks she is perfect but she is as mean as they come in my book.

Hold on, Girl Scouts! I have nothing against Girl Scouts, but I disagree. There have been mean girls before reality tv and will continue even if reality tv disappears from tv. I'm not saying reality tv doesn't influence people, but let's say that your parents are mean to others in front of you, wouldn't that also influence mean behavior? There are so many factors affecting youngsters perception of life that it makes it easier for people to transfer blame to external forces. Let's start at home. Lead by example and" Teach your children well..."
