Joe Paterno

Dead at 85

1/22/2012 7:22 AM PST BY TMZ STAFF

Joe Paterno dies at the age of 85
Joe Paterno -- the legendary former football coach at Penn State University -- died this morning at the age of 85 ... this according to his family.

His family released a statement that reads, "He died as he lived. He fought hard until the end, stayed positive, thought only of others and constantly reminded everyone of how blessed his life had been. His ambitions were far reaching, but he never believed he had to leave this Happy Valley to achieve them. He was a man devoted to his family, his university, his players and his community."

The front page of the website for the Penn State athletic department was updated with simply a picture of Paterno (see below).

Jerry Sandusky, the longtime assistant coach facing sexual abuse allegations that led to Paterno's dismissal at Penn State, called his death a sad day ... and Paterno "had the courage to practice what he preached" about toughness, hard work and clean competition.

Paterno was the coach at Penn State for 46 years, until he was famously fired by the school last November following the sexual abuse allegations against Sandusky.

In November 2011, his son Scott announced Paterno had a treatable form of lung cancer.

JoePa, as he was known, holds the record for most victories by a Division I football coach with 409.

Paterno never witnessed any assaults and did report what he had heard about Sandusky. If you want to convict someone by the news media and public opinion you should McQueary who claims to have witnessed Sandusky assaulting a young boy and did nothing but walk away and leave the young boy with Sandusky to continue the assault. At the very least McQueary could have done is let his presence be known to stop the assault on the young boy by coughing, making noise, etc anything other than what he did. Most of you as myself would have knocked Sanduskys lights out if I thought he was assaulting a young boy. McQueary walked away and did nothing to help the young or least make sure he was ok. McQueary waited until the next morning to tell anyone on what he saw or didn't see. He has told several versions of this since. I find McQueary to have zero credibility . I do think Paterno has been made the scapegoat

This is for all of you Joe Paterno fans....you keep saying he didn't molest anyone and he wasn't the monster but if you witness something as horrific as this and only tell your supervisor and think you have done your job then you are just as guilty as the molestor. For those of you who are unsure of what to do when you see a 10 year old being raped by a grown man YOU CALL THE POLICE!!! PERIOD!!

It is a good thing this pedophile enabler is dead. Not only are there young victims by the sexual molester but also innocent young victims that the predator might have taken as some type of threat and as a coach he might have squashed some young kids sport dream because the pedophile just didn't like that kid.

We dont know how Paterno died he may have drank himself to death or killed himself or natural cause. Either way he was a very evil man who enabled a pedophile to pounce on young boys, maybe Joe liked it

Too bad it was not sooner. His lack of action and cover up ruined the lives of children.

I hope that Sandusky goes quickly too but with a pillows blocking his air supply.

I think it is sad that he had a career of 46 years and instead of stepping aside and retiring, he choose to stay as Coach. If he had retired, he might be remembered for his football career, instead of not knowing that a man could rape a boy. He didn't know how to handle it. He says he reported it, but I would think after months and then years of nothing happening about it, he would follow up.

It hasn't been released yet but the cause of Joe Paterno's death was Jerry Sandusky. RIP JOE.

Really?

How quick we are to wish hellfire and brimstone. Focus your anger on Sandusky and do good work to enact legislation to ensure this doesn't happen again.

Sad way to die under all this controversy. All his nutty fans think he is god. But like all fanatics, religious and otherwise, they are completely deranged.
