Maksim Chmerkovskiy

'Dancing' Exaggerated

Melissa's Injuries for Ratings

4/10/2012 1:53 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

"Dancing with the Stars" pro Maksim Chmerkovskiy -- who was with Melissa Gilbert when she hit her head on the show yesterday -- is strongly insinuating ... "Dancing" producers conspired to overstate the actress' injuries to drum up ratings.

"Dancing" host Tom Bergeron announced at the end of yesterday's show -- Melissa had injured herself during her and Maks' Paso Doble routine (below) ... and was rushed to a nearby hospital.

Melissa later announced on her Twitter she had sustained whiplash and a mild concussion during the performance -- but Maks tells us a different story ... insisting the actress just "bumped her head."

We asked if "Dancing" producers tend to play up celebrity injuries on the show for ratings -- and Maks responded ... they don't fake it ... but they "amplify it a little bit."

Every show does something for ratings--no big deal. But I have a difficult time understanding why this arrogant guy thinks he understands Melissa's injuries better than she does.

I saw nothing.

Since is still employed by DWTS, I am surprised that he would make a public statement like that.

He never says that it is Melissa's injury that is getting 'amplified'. He could be talking about Derek's partner Maria, since every week they have been talking about her, and it's well known that Maks and Derek do not get along.

Tom Bergerson is a liberal idiot who shoves his opinions down
the viewers throat all the time on AFV. The only person that thinks hes funny is him!!!

I think they do amplify drama for ratings. From the claims of fighting to broken ribs, etc.

Just like the one gal claimed her ribs are broke but still dancing, then they show her last week BOXING (uh huh, broken ribs, yeah right), now she has a broken foot, but dancing on it. Then they call her super human.

It is all getting so fake.

DWTS is not as fun to watch anymore.

I thought it was unusual that her sister Sara didn't say anything about it on The Talk today, and now I realize this may be why. The Talk is on CBS, so there's no reason to hype DWTS, so she didn't offer Melissa a "get well", which she likely would have if it were truly something serious. Much ado about nothing.

I think he is trying to get let go from the show, otherwise why would he say they amplified her injuries for ratings?

Tom didn't say she was 'rushed to the hospital', TMZ. Who's amping up the story now? He said she had suffered an injury and "has been taken to the hospital to get checked out". Big difference.

And TMZ will trump up stories for page views. He NEVER insinuated the producers were consiring to overstate injuries. This whole article is a great example of how people in the media exagerate for attention.

There's a difference with the level of pain associated with the bump between a man and woman. I'm not sure if Maks knows that.

and we, the consumer keep believing the hype...from DWTS and from TMZ...

so who is too blame???

Problem is DWTS was a fun show when it first came on.

The whole premise was stars/celebrities who couldn't dance paired up with dancing professionals to see how far they could learn to dance in a what 3-4 months TV show season, to get the cheezy disco mirror ball trophy.

The so called 'stars' and professional partners are only paid for as long as they last. The longer lasting the more money they get.
