Jay-Z Escalates Cristal Boycott: Krug Life?

Poppin' open bottles of Cristal has been a staple of rap videos for the last several years.  But, last week Cristal exec Frederic Rouzaud said the brand is trying to distance itself from the rap community:

"(It's) unwelcome attention. What can we do? We can't forbid people from buying it. I'm sure Dom Perignon or Krug would be delighted to have their business."

Jay - Z says no to CristalA miffed Jay-Z released a statement announcing that he'll no longer use Cristal products:

"It has come to my attention that the managing director of Cristal, Frederic Rouzaud views the 'hip-hop' culture as "unwelcome attention." I view his comments as racist and will no longer support any of his products through any of my various brands including The 40/40 Club nor in my personal life."

And, apparently Jay took Rousaud's suggestion on other brands to heart:

"The response from our customers at 40/40 has been incredible. "This weekend, we sold more bottles of Krug and Perrier Jouet than [ever] and we expect that trend to continue. They are great products and we are glad they have embraced us with open arms."

Now, Mr. Carter is going even further in his Cristal boycott. He's going to remove all Cristal references from his lyrics. His rep says:

"You can bet that Cristal will not be in Jay's lyrics on Sunday. What will replace it, only he knows at the time, because he rhymes on the fly - so don't be surprised to hear something different."

So who will Jay-Z give props to at this weekend's show, Dom, Krug or both? Either way, Jay's feelings for Mr. Rousaud's brand are Cristal clear.

1. Props to Jay-Z... Rap & Hip Hop artists have made Cristal what it is today. There are plenty of other Drinks that an be served & bought by the "Black" community. So, I agree with Jay & anyone else who NEVER buys Cristal again... I put Cristal in the same league as Liz Claiborne... she said years ago that her products was not made for the Blacks in mind... I wish she said that before I had bought 3 of her purses back then...
Do what you gotta DO!!!

2. JAY-Z IS JUST AS STUPID AS ANY OTHER BROTHER/SISTER WHO DRINKS ALCOHOL!! LIQUOR IS KILLING US (CAR ACCIDENTS,SICKNESS, MUCH VIOLENCE) BECAUSE LIQUOR IS A DRUG!! IF JAY-Z WANTS TO MAKE A TRUE STATEMENT, HE SHOULD BITE THE BULLET AND RAIL AGAINST ALL ALCOHOL!!!

3. I think that it was a brilliant move on Jay's part to remove the line from any aspect of his life. I personally hope that more people in the hip hop world will take action in the same direction. For Rouszaud to publicly make that comment sickens me; but at least we know now that the money, time and efforts on the hip hop community were in vain. It's time to give props where they are due, and I say more power to those that realize that their influence and buying power does really count. I am sure that while Rouzaud was bumping his gums; he wasn't actually thinking about how this could have an effect on his sales for the next quarter. It will be VERY interesting to see how things turn finacially (as far as sales) for Cristal's company....

5. I personally think that it was a brilliant idea on Jay's behalf. Apparently Rouzuad doesn't really recognize the full potential that our ('black/african" americans) & the hip hop community & culture has. I'm sure that while he was busy bumping his gums about how he doesn't appreciate the acknowledgements he wasn't thinking about how this could potentially have a major effect on the sales of the bubbly. I'm interested in seeing the financial reports of his next quarter! I applaud the efforts of Jay to annihilate his association with the product not only in his clubs, but in his personal life. I also think it will be a wonderful opportunity to venture out and do business with other companys that have been in the game for a long time, with long over due props.

6. Since when is not liking hip hop being racist? I don't like hip hop and i'm not racist! These people, hip hop people, are as dumb as I thought...

As for the other commentor about hip hop making crystal? Are you kidding? That must be some sort of joke.

7. I agree fully with Jay-Z , basically this cristal director was saying that he was racist, he just put it in a nice way. Because he's views some "unwanted attention"? What exactly have you viewed? There are plenty other people besides the ones in the hip hop community that drink Cristal, not all of them drink responsibily or have the cleanest of backgrounds and yet nothing has been said about them. Years ago when Jay-Z first came out , not a lot people knew about Cristal until he started mentiong in many of his songs. I personally think that this director is going to see a significant drop in his sales.

9. oh jay-z, grow up. every time that something bad happens to a black person, they call it racist. i hate that music jay-z! you're terrible! oops, sorry, i'm being racist and because i don't like rap, that must mean that i hate all black people. silly me! stop pulling the race card, because that's the easy way out.

10. Ok I agree with Jay too, some of the things he said, "unwelcome attention" and "their business" can be viewed as being racist. Lets face it people, racism isn't as prevalent as it was in the past, but it is still here, just in more subtle ways...As a business owner, you should welcome all business that promotes your product, Jay and the hip hop community opened African-Americans to something they probably wouldn't have tried. Word of mouth has a lot to do with business surviving, I know because I have one myself...So if he feels like he wants to pull it off his shelves then fine, he is a business owner and has to do what he feel is best for his business. As far as the drinking and being stupid, everyone should know their limits when it comes to anything YOU take upon YOURSELF to do, drinking is one of them. You should police yourself in that matter and not expect someone else to do it for you. Blaming someone else for you indiscretions is not a pretty thing. As for the stupidity from stephanie and especially BoB Saget with his reference to hip hop people as "these people...are dumber than I thought", grow up please, voicing an opinion about something doesn't mean you have to go on the offensive and start to attack anyone or any group of people...I would have thought we were past this by now....

11. I'm boycotting Cristal too. It's financially-motivated though. I just can't afford the stuff. Now pass me the Andre....

12. Frederic Rouzaud's comments were not racist but elitist.

Cristal was, before hip-hop brought our attention to it, an exclusive drink. Previously, it was not only a matter of being able to afford to drink it - you had to first know that it existed! Being seen to order Cristal was a way of discretely showing other members of the elite that you were one of them. However, this time is long over, thanks to hip-hop artists like Jay-Z. Cristal is no longer the smug secret of the elite and this, unsurprisingly, has not gone down well with the Cristal exec.

It has nothing to do with race. Other elitist products have been 'brought down' by white people. Before the chavs (white working class British) appropriated it, Burberry was an exclusive brand. To discretely flash a Burberry lined collar or sport a Burberry handbag was a sure sign to a member of the elite that you were one of them. These days however, to wear Burberry is to show quite the opposite.

The rich elite want their products to be exclusive to them. Having Cristal (or Burberry) dragged out of it's exclusive niche and paraded in front of the masses is the last thing people like Frederic Rouzaud want to happen.

13. I don't have too much of an opinion because I didn't read the initial interview & I heard what the Wine Guy said was taken out of context. If it was, then I wouldn't boycott, if it wasn't, then hip-hop's money should be gone from their tills.

Hey Kat, look on www.snopes.com. It will tell you that Liz Claiborne, Tommy Hilfigger & Lauryn hill never made the racist comments they've been accused of. Just figured I'd make you feel better in case you ever see a purse of her's you like again :)

14. Ok here is the thing that most that posted a comment here missed. The Hip Hop industry is predominately Black/African American artists, so if this comment was made and is autherntic, then this comment would be viewed as a racist / discriminatory comment. The people on TV are BLACK!!, hes not talking about the 3 or 4 white people that just recently got some recognition. And ROY JOHNSON, I hope youve never touched a bottle in your life..... making a comment like that. Liquor is not killing us, we are killing ourselves when we have no self control. Take resposibility for your own actions!! If it were the way you say, youd better boycott companies on a global scale, but i bet you one thing, you wouldnt get past your front door without that toothpaste you have sitting on your bathroom sink. Not liking Hip Hop is a racist thing and if anyone feels i have to be a little more selective with my words then, not liking Hip Hop is a discriminatory thing..... no matter how you want to view this its still wrong. "These people" are as dumb as you thought? what kind of comment is that BOB? Generalizing? THE MORE YOU KNOW, THE MORE YOU KNOW YOU DONT KNOW. And you obviously know nothing about the Hip Hop community BOB SAGAT, whats that say about you?.

15. Perhaps the company objects to being featured in videos consisting of strippers, groupies and champagne guzzling rappers who call women whores and bitches glorifying the murder and guns and boasting how they got so much money they have to drink Cristal.

I cant' imagine WHY though...
