Celebs Who Claim They're Green but Guzzle Gas

10/18/2006 12:45 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Hybrid cars are all the rage in Hollywood. Celebrities drive them like they're a badge of honor. You save a few gallons of gas, you save the planet. Right? Well, not when you hop on a private jet and burn enough fuel to propel NASCAR through 2050.

Of course, the stars need to go here and there. The location shoots, the fabulous vacations, etc. But that's why God created United Airlines. G-IV's, on the other hand, were created in the image of precious celebs.

Julia Roberts

On the ground: Roberts drives a Prius, which gets (at best) 60 miles to the gallon, shaving 30 miles off a normal car's mpg.
In the air: Chicago/LA, 1,749 miles in a private jet, the route she took with Rupert Everett while shooting "My Best Friend's Wedding."
Gas guzzled: 2,100 gallons of jet fuel.
Prius Penance: Julia would have to drive 30,000 miles, or roughly once around the earth and then some to even out her consumption in the air.
So Julia says: No word yet from Julia's rep.

Jennifer Lopez

On the ground:
J-Lo tools around in her 60 miles-per-gallon Prius.
In the air: LA /New York, 2,475 miles in a private jet. Lopez was actually sued by a private jet company for allegedly skipping out on the bill, though she says it's all a misunderstanding and she was not supposed to be billed.
Gas guzzled: 2,750 gallons of jet fuel.
Prius penance:
She'd have to drive 45,000 miles, and that's a lot longer for Jenny than just going down the block. It's actually more like twice around the earth.
So Jennifer says: There was no comment from Lopez's rep.

George Clooney

On the ground: George favors a Tango, an electric car that gets a whopping 135 miles to the charge.
In the air: Los Angeles/Tokyo, 5500 miles in a private jet.
Gas guzzled:
7,000 gallons of jet fuel.
Electric shocker: Even with his super-saver Tango, he'll have to drive over 57 oceans -- Pacific Oceans to break even.
So George says: Clooney's rep, publicist Stan Rosenfield, tells TMZ, "You clearly have no understanding of certain people's need for private transport," and points out that Clooney often has "no control" over his travel schedule.

Brad Pitt gets off his private jetBrad Pitt

On the ground:
Eco-champ Brad is yet another Prius-lover, and he reportedly has several hybrids in his stable.
In the air: Los Angeles/Namibia, 9,400 miles in a private jet.
Gas guzzled:
11,000 gallons of jet fuel.
Prius penance: Brad burned enough fuel to take a Prius to the moon.
So Brad says: Pitt didn't have any comment. His rep tells TMZ that Pitt is out of the country.

Leo fueling his PriusAnd the true-blue Green Award goes to ... Leo DiCaprio.

On the ground: Leo drives a Toyota Prius
In the air: Leo flies just like us folk -- commercial, unless he positively must fly private because of scheduling.
Prius penance: None.

but its funny that they live in huge homes that consume more gas, electric and water. But at least I have a green car to look good in.

If want to go green thats great, but why should they get to consume more of the other resource.......becuase they can.

thats not mention if they have multiple houses, which again consume gas, electric and water. But at least I have a Prius

I am also sure that they have nice manicured lawns and heated pools but they probably achieve that we hand shears, no water and a solor blanket.

Keep drinking the Kool-aid and paying 10 bucks to see my films which waste a ton of natural resources which we trash after we are done. Yep we care about the environment.

CELEBRITY LOGIC - This reminds me of the hypocracy of gun control; no private ownership for the hard working family with children in crack central, but a troop of armed guards for the celebrity's family in Beverly Hills. Regular people can't drive a large, safe vehicle, but a celebrity, because they are "important", decide to fly fuel guzzling private jets. I don't begrudge private jets so long as the hollywood crowd doesn't preach to me about what car I drive.

SUBJECT: ENDING AMERICA'S ADDICTION TO OIL--EMPOWERING THE PEOPLE

Driving hybrid cars won't stop the addiction.

Please be advised that a new book on subject is fresh off the press.

The book title is: "HOW TO LIVE WELL WITHOUT OWNING A CAR" by Chris Balish.

This book is a step-by-step plan to reduce the number of cars on the road and to empower all Americans in a voluntary fight to effectively reduce America's dangerous dependence on oil and to reduce global warming.

We need to adopt a plan for educating all Americans on how to live without so many cars.

Sincerely,

Tom Balish

How about that statement from the "publisist" (paid blame-taker). "You're just too dumb to understand how hard it is to get the pretty people to such important events as buying an African village and only getting one skinny black kid in return".
I have no problem with George cLooney flying 1,000,000,000,000,000 miles...as long as it's a one way trip!

Trust me, I used to live in Thousand Oaks and spent some time in Malibu and NONE of these Hollywood elitists drive “hybrids” unless its for a PR photo opportunity. They ALL drive $100K + luxury cars or sports cars/SUVs.

You tree huggers are once again missing the point. Saying they HAVE to travel to exotic locations is a friggin joke. I'd love to see how many air miles they travel and how much is "business" related. Sure, they have the cash and I'm sure they work SO hard to deserve a vacation, but what a bunch of two faced whiners. I love it when these celebs bash people who drive gas guzzlers. Come out to the midwest in January with your tinfoil cars in a blizzard. Try to drive your Prius to check cattle or in the fields at harvest time.
Tell ya what, stop telling me how and what to drive and I won't second guess your methods of travels, celebrity loud mouth crowd. But when they run thier mouth about global warming and being more responsible, the good folks at TMZ and others will be up your butt showing you the errors of your ways.

I agree with Joe, and Michael made an excellent point! Most celebrities are out for themselves, they love to preach to the public, and blame the rest of the world for the state of our enviroment. One of them happens to be Al Gore, remember when he preached being more fuel conservative and all that "do more to protect the enviroment " rhetoric, well he happens to be driven around in a BIG black Chevy Tahoe SUV. The footage of him getting into that specific vehicle was shown awhile ago, when he was promoting his eco-friendly movie, talking all that "world is being destroyed" jargon which he has no scientific knowledge of. On that note: Scientist's depend on the government for funding, so it doesn't take a genius to see that a portion of the science community's views are skewed towards agreeing with Mr. Gore, for the purpose of obtaining funding for specific scientific research programs. I believe those scientist who stood up against the skewed scientist's, these scientist actually show that hurricane's, tsunami's, earthquake's, etc.... have cycles in which after a certain number of years, they become stronger and more frequent. It's time people wake up!!!!!

you hypocrite-defenders are missing one important point. Private jets are not bad. What's bad is that these high-and-mighty actors preach about the environment, criticize people for driving SUVs (which uses a fraction of the fuel that their planes do), be-littling everyone for not conserving, they are being hypocritical by using 1000x the gas that the average non-prius drivers use. It is like someone campaigning against pornography, but rapes children on the side. Complaining about people driving SUVs, while jetting around the world on a private jet is ridiculous. So don't blur the issue by talking about privacy. The issue is that these people are hypocrites.

Those Hybrids get the rest of their power from electricty, which in most cases is generated with fossil fuels...a strain on our power grid and also a pollution source. I think holywood, should stay away from preaching, they only hurt the cause they are preaching about with their elitist hypocrisy. I don't care if its Barbara Steisand or Chuck Heston, shut the F#ck up.

Leo, why do you have a phone to your ear while you are pumping gas? Good way to blow yourself up buddy.

All of these celbrities are jerks who are full of it. I give nothing they do any credit. Sure donate your time for some trendy cause. Then write off your time on your income tax.
