Oprah's 'O'cademy

1/2/2007 4:24 PM PST BY TMZ STAFF

Just call it the Oprah Winfrey School for Girls.

The billionaire talk show diva opened a school in a small town south of Johannesburg, South Africa today. The school for underprivileged girls boasts computer and science laboratories, a library and theater, and was built as a result of a meeting between Winfrey and the country's former President, Nelson Mandela.

The event was attended in South Africa by celebs Mariah Carey, Tina Turner, Chris Tucker, Mary J. Blige and Spike Lee.

Of her decision to open a school in South Africa instead of the U.S., Winfrey dissed American kids by telling Newsweek, "If you ask the kids what they want or need, they will say an iPod or some sneakers. In South Africa, they don't ask for money or toys. They ask for uniforms so they can go to school."

DELA (Ghana Educated)

Oprah should be commended more than condemned about her building a boarding school in the Rep. Of South Africa.By the way ,to clear the air about the South Africa education system, for many years majority blacks had just enough education to be able to read and write, the minority whites lived in lavish and the wealthy of the natives.South Africa is not a poor country by any standards. It can be compared to Malaysia and Singapore but for Apartheid which scared its progress creating class system and a poverty strickem majority like the black ghettos here in the united states. Its sad that the world leading gold mining country has nothing to show its citizens for it ,because for years Europe and majority of the West has raped Afric of its resources and left nothing to its natives.Oprah should have included boys making it a coeducational institution but who knows what she was thinking.Atleast South African majority are grateful that something like this has been done to allow African girls to reach even more higher heights in the world.I attended a coeducational boarding school in Ghana west Africa .Our Great Ex- president Osaygefo Nkrumah did an excellent job creating the best educational system which was not based on class or ethnic origin like there is South Africa and America but based on merit. I can proudly say there are other African schools that have given African children the dream of a better future for Africa. Studying in the us made me realise the only difference between our IQ and does of western kids was that we had to strive harder to get the same education they got on a silverplater because we couldn't afford. But even with the hard up resources we had for education we did better in the SAT's and Cambridge Exams.I proud to say many developing African countried have educations systems which are not the best but have produced the most brilliant professionals in all walks of life today. Like the Asia school system Africa is gradually catching up to the west.. You should see the joy on these kids faces as they look to learn, just learn as kids and be groomed to replace this generation and give Africa a different image than what the ignorant western media portrays. In Ghana there are boarding schools like the SOS children village HERMANN GMEINER School, and other good boarding schools which a producing good students from poor homes who might not have that opportunity because of the cost of education in boarding houses. To all philanthropist who don't really know a lot about Africa but want to help .I advise you to visit any country. As Africa is been portrayed by the media as a ''dark continent'' which is a dehumanizing way to describe any place where people of all races live,I ask all true friends of Africa and African citizens to show the good side as well.South Africa is more beautiful than any western country I have ever been to Europe or the Americas go see it for yourself.Senegal ,Ghana ,Malawi just to mention a few are just as beautiful.Congratulations Oprah someday you could give scholarship to underpreviledge kids in America and around the world to have an education in your instituion which is going to flourish and become on the the best educational institutions in the world.I think many american kids will appreciate education more if they came to boarding schools in Africa. There is nothing like the affordable boarding school experience.Viva Africa!!

Why are people griping about what Oprah does with HER money? She has given literally millions to Americans over the years and 40 million most likely pales in comparison. How many Americans are there? If everyone gave $1 OK $2 to make up for those that suck from society....how much money is that???
Oprah's school will have approx. 450 students....who know maybe more when things get rolling. Who knows she may build more schools in the future...here or abroad. There seems to be alot of presumption . Furthermore I have NEVER witnessed so much me me me , our, our, our, us, I in my life. There are others in this international community .
With an aids epidemic in SA perhaps educating women with leadership skills etc which is way beyond a public education, will be a step in a positive direction in changing this crisis. In the long run this affects us all.
If Oprah gave absolutely nothing....how much griping would there be??? There are alot of very wealthy people who give nothing and not a word is said. Interesting.

Furthermore I am a FIRM believer that North American students should also wear school uniforms. They have their education paid for...it is the least we could expect from them and their ill informed parents. This would eliminate this ridiculous need to wear what is the latest in fashion and help eliminate the have and have not mentality in the school setting, ie. pants down to their knees etc.
It's not a fashion show that should be priority in our schools, it's education....these precious little darlings can wear whatever they want outside the institution of education. Mind you if you want them to be disrepectful lowlife society sucking users...then let them do what ever and dress whatever they like within the education institution.

Forgot to add that the academic standing of American students has declined dramatically over the past 20 Years compared to many other countries. Interesting since America should be the forrunner. Priority of children seems to be more on emulating the Britney Spears, Paris Hiltons etc. The language and disrepect that the parents of America incourage and allow in the pop culture is resulting in children with little respect for each other or others. I know alot of elderly that are fearful to walk down a street . This was not the case 20 odd years ago. I may not have all the answers but certainly have observed a major decline in compassion and respect of the youth in general.

She needs to check out REAL People In Need! They are all over the United States (where SHE lives!!!). There are millions of people in the U.S. right now that don't have clothes, food, shelter, etc. and she goess off to Africa and builds a school for 40 million dollars?

C'mon Oprah, show us your US roots, put your money where it belongs. Back to the people that MADE you rich!

You'd be surprised how much just a $100.00 dollars would do to help a needy family here!!!
