Oprah: I'm No Madonna

I'm not a big fan of Oprah, nothing personal, just never have been. But her recent statements and postion on building a school in South Africa vs. building one for unnapreciative U.S. children commands my respect, and applause. Nicely stated, and nicely done I say.

This is about being self-centered and arrogant! Who doesn't want to leave their mark? Dogs piss on trees all the time not knowing the consequences. Oprah and many other celebrities hate the idea of America because it's the "Cool Thing to Do" abroad where many have homes. Anyone notice Oprah's new found South African accent? LOL, THAT IDIOT!

Of course our kids want iPods, Air Jordan's and Pontiac G6 cars. "O" only contributes to the problem that's too big for her tackle. Writing million dollar checks to school districts is irresponsible. Can you say tax deduction? : )
A hands on approach and 40 million will go a long way anywhere. She could have helped so many! Unfortuantely she built a school without government support. Where will the money come from? "O" is not Bill Gates or Warren Buffet rich. More importantly, a girl who leaves her school at 14 is not coming to an American university. (Gosh, I went to school 12 years to prepare for a 4 year university) She is going back to her village with 2 years of education under her belt and no way out.

For all you people saying it's Oprahs' money, she can do whatever she wants! Irresponsible! If I read correctly, she lived in places without running water here in the USA. She has a resposibility to give back to that community; the community that didn't give up on her. Too bad she's running far away from it! She got rich through "US" but decided to turn her back on "US" by calling "US" materialistic and lazy. Thanks, "O"! God forbid a 2nd grade American girl ask for a Easy Bake Oven. "O" will proabaly call her obese!

Her elitist school is just window dressing . With the 40 million dollars she could have created 10 schools that could have had thousands of students . Just an Elitist thinking its good to bring more Elitists into the world. And how generous of her -- 40 million dollars -- do the math , thats what Oprah makes in a week . WOW how Saint - like . An d since shes' a billionare an extra Dickhead for your crappy shows -- Dr Phil , Dr. Assblow and the Cooking Crackhead -- just the crappiest bunch of shows that are only on because of Oprahs money -- thats a kind lesson to you out there -- Money talks and Sh*t walks . I have a good friend of mine who has met Oprah a few times at events and parties and he told me "she is a total bitch and that she thinks she is the center of the universe." F*** Oprah.

I don't have a problem with Oprah opening up a school in Africa for those girls. I think it was a great idea. Those girls have nothing and all they want is an education, and good for Oprah for giving them a chance.

HOWEVER, I do have a problem with her racist (yeah, she is) comment about not caring to appease the white people of the country. Um, how is it that she gets away with saying that? I wish a white celebrity (maybe Rosie?) would open up a school for underprivileged white girls and make the same statement about black people. She would be crucified.

Such a double standard exists in this country when it comes to white and black. It's ok to have a Miss Black America Contest, Black History Month, and Black Entertainment TV, along with different awards shows for blacks, but man, try and diss the blacks for any kind of shows, magazines, etc. and all hell breaks loose.

No wonder people are prejudiced.

I applaude Oprah for her efforts, and looks forward to seeing the fruits of her labor.

As a person who grew up in the inner city and attended some of those schools, I can understand why Oprah didn't build a school here. Why? When the chances are it will be gang-infested and run-down in a couple of years.

Oprah can't help them. Until the parents in those communities start getting involved and teaching their children to value an education, nothing is going to change. They need to hound their public officials and demand they come up with solutions to get money for those schools so that their children can have a chance at a better life.

This is the United States of America, where anyone can make something of themselves with effort. But you have to want it, no one else can do that for you.

Hey if she wants to spend her mega-bucks helping those less fortunate in other parts of the world then so be it. I don;t care for Opera one bit, but I think what she is doing is great. Same with Madonna, Brad, and Angelina...

And to your comment #4, I think the reason she doesn't care about the inner city students is becasue they don't give a sh*t about anything.... they don't want to learn... all they want to do is break every law they can and when someone says "why don't you make something of your life" to them they slap down the race card like a pair of pocket slicks at a hold 'em game... Oraph knows how it works, and that is why she doesn't even bother wasting her time...

At least the African kids WANT to learn and are willing to take steps to improve their lives... Both of my parents where Administrators in inner city schools in East St. Louis for many years when i was a child.... I have intimate knowledge of how that whole thing works.... I bet not even 5% of those students made something of their lives.... not because they were under privledged, black, or any other "minority" but becasue they simply don't give a flying F***

Supposedly Oprah said that she wouldn't do anything else for black children in this country because of the lack of support from their parents. True? False? Just how much does she spend on education in this country? Bill and Melinda Gates seem to have no problem giving money to educate any child of any color; what's Oprah's problem? Maybe she feels it'll be better to have undereducated American children sitting on their butts watching her show while she talks about her 12 pairs of pashima pajamas and what she's done for South Africa. And this is the same hypocrite who had no problem complaining about people not helping in New Orleans and opening their homes to people, and she was only there to further her show. You can bet your bottom dollar she didn't open any of her houses to Katrina victims.

Oprah provides lots of financial aide for schools here in the USA. The South African school is a result of Oprah's first visit there and seeing the poverty firsthand. She promised to try to make a difference there and she has.

There are no lack of educational options for White South Africans, and the question was pointless - hence the response. I heard Harvey Levin's rant this morning on KROQ here in LA about Oprah's statement. No it wasn't racist - much ado about nothing and nowhere in the league of Michael Richards tirade.

stefanie powers built william holden wildlife education center 20 years ago and continues to expand this project in kenya as well as build small country schools in rural areas and makes sure all children get an education in the tribal area as well as lessons in conservation so the people of the country understand the importance of preserving their natural resources. on and on good things about schools being done for 20 years now and number almost 50.// there is no airconditioning but there is an education and other skills taught to thousands.
JUST WHERE DOES OPRAH THINK THESE 152 GIRLS ARE GOING AFTER GRADUATION, their goal will be America and all is worldly pleasures certainly only a handful will want to remain in South Africa
