Attack of the Killer iPods!

2/7/2007 4:21 PM PST BY TMZ STAFF

iPodIf a proposed bill passes in New York, you won't see pedestrians in Manhattan bopping along to their iPods.

State Sen. Carl Kruger is planning to introduce legislation to ban the use of gadgets -- iPods, Blackberrys, cell phones, etc. -- while crossing city streets. Careful Sen. Kruger, you don't want to cross Steve Jobs!

"We're talking about people walking, sort of tuned in and in the process of being tuned in, tuned out," Kruger told WCBS-TV in New York. "They're walking into speeding cars. They're walking into buses. They're walking into one another and it's creating a number of fatalities that have been documented right here in the city."

Kruger's bill calls for a $100 fine, and would apply only to big cities in New York state, which already has a law banning the use of cell phones while driving, unless a hands-free device is used.

So he says Ipod listeners are tuned out. What liberties can be taken away from the blind and deaf who want to be independent? Must we make them stay home so they don't harm themselves?
If Ipod-estrians were killing people: like running over others with their bad walking/listening skills or dropping their device on people's feet and causing sidewalk collisions or starting stubbed-toe lawsuits, then I can see the intelligance of the law. But I don't.

I'm sure NYC cops are going to be enforcing this one all the time. It's not like they have criminals to catch.

So what if your ear buds were in, but the music wasnâ%u20AC%u2122t on?
What if the music was on, but you told the cop it wasnâ%u20AC%u2122t?
What are they gonna do, ask you to take the buds out so that they can listen to see if the music is playing?

Yeah right, I see that going over really well in NY City.

Why is this idiot in office and a Senator? What's scary is people actually VOTED an idiot with such selfish and limited thinking into office.

Brilliant piece of legislation. But if it only applies to crossing the street, how will the cops determine when people are listening to their iPods (legally) while walking on the sidewalk versus when they have them turned off while crossing the street? Or will it be illegal to put anything in your ear while crossing the street? Also, I've seen people reading while walking in NY city. What should be the fine for that?
