"Lost" Diary -- Enter 77

Hey, it's Daniel from TMZ here, back with another edition of the "Lost" Diary.

A lot of the comments said I was too harsh on last week's episode. Now, I did find myself enjoying the episode as it unfolded, but when it was done, and I realized nothing had really happened, I was pissed off. "Lost" is (was?) the kind of show where you absolutely could not miss a single episode or else you wouldn't know what was going on the following week. You could have easily skipped the last two shows and been fine and that's just not what "Lost" is about. Thus, that's the reason I hated last week's show.

This week I am with the usual crew of Ari, Lauren and Matt. Lauren had a dream that tonight's episode of "Lost" would be good. So assuming Lauren can predict the future, we're in for a good show. Let's roll:

10:00 -- Sawyer is mulling around the beach and acting pissy. He calls the new guy "Zorro," and it has now officially reached the point where Sawyer's nickname-calling has jumped the shark for me.

10:01 -- Sayid, Locke, Kate and Rousseau are making their way through the woods, looking for the Others. Note to the producers: more Locke, please!

10:03 -- Old MacOther had a farm, E-I-E-O.

10:06 -- When Sawyer starts bitching about his stuff, I just can't stand it. Does he not have anything more pressing to worry about than his copy of Guns & Ammo? But when Sawyer said "Who are you?" to the new chick, that was great.

10:07 -- My lord, it's like a dream come true. Sun wants Sawyer to stop using nicknames if they win the ping pong match. I LOVE IT!!!

10:08 -- Sayid and the gang are planning on going into the farm. Rousseau has never seen the place. For someone who has been there for 18 years, she does not know the island well at all.

10:10 -- It's Sayid flashback time and he is a chef now. Apparently, he is a good chef because the guy from "Crash" is offering him a job at his restaurant.

10:11 -- Patchy (Mikhail) shot Sayid in the arm and has proclaimed himself the last living member of the Dharma Initiative. I wouldn't lead with that on your resume, pal.

10:16 -- Mikhail is giving us his life story and how he got involved with the Dharma Initiative. He's been on the island 11 years, his hatch is called The Flame, and his job is to "communicate with the outside world." Information is coming fast and furious.

10:18 -- All of the members of the Dharma Initiative died in a war against the Hostiles and the satellite dish doesn't work.

10:19 -- Back to the flashback, where Sayid is going to check out the restaurant, only something tells me Sammy isn't really looking for a chef.

10:21 -- Yeah, Sayid is in trouble. He tortured the wrong person, I am guessing.

10:22 -- Mikhail is quite the host, though something tells me Locke shouldn't be playing that chess game; think "War Games."

10:23 -- Locke couldn't possibly beat the unbeatable computer in chess ...

10:24 -- Sayid thinks Mikhail is lying and that he's not alone. This could get good.

10:27 -- Back on the beach, it's Sawyer vs. Hurley for ping pong supremacy. Ari says he wants to play Sawyer in ping pong; Lauren wants to play him in tonsil hockey. To each their own.

10:29 -- Most fans like Sayid more than I do, but I do enjoy it when he's interrogating someone -- especially when that someone doesn't know they are being interrogated. But I guess Mikhail caught on Sayid's questioning and opted for "ass whooping" over small talk.

10:31 -- Locke was a tad late to get in on the action, wasn't he?

10:33 -- When you're chained to the ground, and someone threatens to cut you up and put in a duffel bag, I don't care who you are, that's got to worry you a little bit.

10:34 -- Sayid did his best Columbo impression to figure out that Mikhail (if that is his name) wasn't alone because the stirrups on the horse outside were set for someone much shorter than Mikhail. Uh, just one more thing Mikhail ...

10:37 -- Sayid won't admit to torturing Sammy's wife. Not sure if I believe him or not.

10:39 -- Is Locke really going to leave Mikhail unguarded to keep playing computer chess?

10:40 -- Yeah he is.

10:41 -- So what do you think happens when Locke wins the chess match? Someone should tell him the whole place is wired with explosives.

10:42 -- "Manual override achieved ... For mainland communication, enter 3-8." Didn't work. "For sonar access, enter 5-6." Neither did that one. How about, "To be magically teleported off the island and straight to Las Vegas, press 7-2"?

10:43 -- And Mikhail woke up. Fun while it lasted. Is it weird that while all this is going on, I can't help but think, "What's going on with the ping pong match?"

10:44 -- Hey, how weird, someone got the drop on Kate. That almost never happens. By the way, I missed Ms. Klugh.

10:45 -- And now I'll miss her forever. RIP Ms. Klugh.

10:49 -- The ping pong match is over and Hurley whooped up on Sawyer. Kinda wanted to see the whooping take place. Oh well.

10:50 -- To kill or not to kill Mikhail, that is the question. He ain't going anywhere.

10:53 -- Boring story about feeling safe, Sayid cries, Sammy's wife forgives him. Blah, blah, blah.

10:57 -- Sayid tells Rousseau that he won't kill Mikhail. Torture is fine. Murder? Not so much.

10:59 -- Maybe Locke shouldn't have typed 7-7.

Alright, so what did we learn this week? The Others would rather be dead than captured ... They would rather the hatches be destroyed than used by someone else ... The Others and the Dharma workers had a war at some point ... Sayid found a map to the Others hideout.

I honestly don't know what to make of this episode. Everything we were told came from a guy who was lying about who he was, so who knows what's true and what isn't. I couldn't help but wonder, was Kelvin lying way back when when he told Desmond he was in Dharma?

Maybe I am being too hard again, but I give this episode a C+. We learned a couple of interesting things (I think), and seeing Sawyer humbled is always good.

But here is my problem with the last few weeks -- there were no TiVo Moments. When "Lost" is at its best, you have to grab the remote a couple of times an episode and either pause it so you can talk about what just happened, or rewind it because what you just saw HAD to be seen again. When Locke and Eko watched the Dharma training video, we immediately rewound it and watched it again. When Locke found the map on the back of the hatch door, we went back, paused it, and studied it as best we could. That is what a good episode of "Lost" does. I haven't done that once in the last three weeks.

So my question of the week is simple: I was completely befuddled about what to make out of this week's show and I need your help. Give me your grade. I am hoping someone can talk me into believing this week's show was better than I realize.

32. Awesome, Awesome episode!!!! I give it an 'A'. I thought it was the best episode of the season. The flashback was excellent and I liked the link with the cat from current lost time to the flashback. Excellent acting in this episode except for the usual two (Nikki & Paulo). Loved Sawyer's line "who are you" to Nikki. That's what we all have been wondering all season!

33. I believe she was saying something along the lines of "You know what to do" to Patchy.

34. I give it a C+. It's a little unbelievable that no one had discovered the house (the VW van?) after all this time on the island. I didn't learn anything new about Sayid, I already knew he was a tortured torturer. And Locke is losing it. He used to be one of the most interesting, intelligent characters, but his actions on this episode were bizarre, even for him. I would have taken the horse - it would come in handy for exploring the island, I can't believe they just left it (even before it was blown up). The scenes about the ping pong game were good, I wish we could have seen more. I'm happier with the last 2 episodes than all the others this season, so maybe the show is getting back on track. Feeling hopeful...

36. Did anyone else think that maybe Sayid knew what they were saying to each other in Russian? He probably had to study other languages to be a good interrogator, and he yelled for Lock right before the guy even moved his gun to try to kill himself. I think that's why he isn't killing Mikhail. And it's possible that it is how he knew immediately where the extra hatch was hidden.

37. After the previous two episodes, this one was a breath of fresh air. At least SOMETHING was happening. They should elect Sayid the King of the Island because he's the only one who seems to have any idea of what he's doing. The rest of them screw up every time they head off into the jungle, or underground for that matter. Are there really hostiles (Others) vs. Dharma or are they just making that up and they're all Dharma? Is Dharma Russian? Are the Others (assuming they ARE Others) Russian?
Is Locke an idiot? Yes. Is Kate a simpering idiot? Yes. Is Sayid cool? Yes.
When are we going to get to the Hurley connection, which was promised when they killed off Libby? Didn't they say they were going to revisit the whole asylum/island connection?
So many questions. It would be nice if they'd throw in some answers from time to time.

38. i give it a B -, mostly based on Sawyer's comment to Nikki, "Who are you?!"

i've been wondering the same thing, my friend.

39. When Sawyer asked Nikki, "Who are you?", her answer should have been: "Well, I am some hack actress who mysteriously appeared on this island several weeks ago, but since I appear to be "universally despised" by fans, I think I'll go hurl myself into the gaping hole that was the Hatch. Zorro, care to join me?"

A girl can dream, can't she?

Other than the presence of the newbies, I liked the episode. I missed Sayid. Glad to see him again.

40. Hey. Has anyone picked up on the importance of this guy's name yet? (Another member of the philosopher's club). I thought he said his last name was Bakunin. Wasn't Michail Bakunin the father of modern anarchism?

41. I THOUGHT THIS WAS THE BEST SHOW SINCE THE RETURN... ALTHOUGH WHAT THE HELL WAS UP WITH LOCKE AND HIS FASINATION WITH THE CHESS GAME?
IT WAS ALMOST TOO PREDICTABLE THAT DISTRUCTION WAS ON ITS WAY!

WHERE DID MS KLUGH COME FROM? HIDING IN THE CELLAR? TUNNEL?

I LOVE LOCKE AND THE WAY THE HE CAME OFF IN THIS EPISODE WAS CONFUSSING?

LOCKE THE DISTROYER, THIS IS SECOND HATCH THAT BLEW UP UNDER HIS WATCH?
IS LOCKE THAT STUPID? OR DOES HE HAVE SOME STRANGE CONNECTION?
THEY NEVER FOLLOWED UP WITH THAT WEIRD COMMUNAL POT GROWING SITUATION LOCKE ONCE LIVED... WHO WERE THOSE PEOPLE?

HOW DID SAYID TIE PATCH UP THAT HE WAS SO EASILY ABLE TO FREE HIMSELF?

MY BIGGEST PROBLEM WITH LOST IS LOSTIES DONT COMMUNICATE WITH EACH OTHER!!! THEY FIND THE MATERNITY HATCH... THEY FIND THE PEARL ... NOBODY SAYS ANYTHING ....WHY DONT THEY GATHER EVERYONE AND EXCHANGE THE NEW FOUND INFO? LOCKE AND EKO WATCH NEW DHARMA VIDEO THEY DONT TELL ANYONE... THE NUMBERS THAT THEY WERE PUTTING INTO COMPUTER WERE LOGGED IN THE PEARL, THE LOG BOOKS WERE BEING SENT UP INTO THE SHOOT... KATE SAW THE PILE OF LOG BOOKS NO CONNECTION? NO COMMUNICATION!

KATE AND SAYWER RETURN AND NOBODY SITS DOWN TO GIVE REFLECTION OF WHAT THEY WENT THROUGH....

SO NOW IT LOOKS AS THOUGH PATCH WILL ELECTRACUTE HIMSELF NEXT WEEK?

WILL THE FARM EXPLOSION BE FELT BY THE LOSTIES? WILL JIN, SAWYER, ZORRO AND HURLEY COME TO THE RESCUE/HELP?
IS THIS WHERE WE GET TO KNOW MORE ABOUT ZORRO BEFORE HE BITS IT?

42. It's a bad sign when you want to see the ping pong game unfold. I wanted to see it too. When Locke came out "a tad late to get in on the action" and they showed a close up, I thought, "Man, that guy has some piercing blue eyes!"

The show is getting so lame that I'm starting to notice things that have no relevance.

I feel like I'm playing Tomb Raider, stuck in the jungle thinking that every tree is a secret door. Nope, just a tree.

That said, I can't wait for next week's episode.

43. Ok, so when Kate and Locke come out of the Flame (before it explodes) with their "scrounged useful stuff"....why the hell didn't they take one or two or ten of those Dharma manuals????? You know, because information is useless, right? My problem with Lost as of late is the characters are getting stupid. Sawyer and Kate never pumped their "captive" (sorry, have already forgotten his name) for more information and then Sawyer lets him go, the group find extensive manuals about what the heck is/was going on on this island but don't think "hmm, could be good reading material...." And finally, why is Locke still turning into an idiot around computers?? Ya'd think he learned that lesson well.....
I still watch this show because I care about the characters now, but the quality of the writing has absolutely gone down the tubes. With the exception of Sawyer's dialogue. Its the only thing that still puts a smile on my face.

44. Is something going on with the cat? Or was Sayid just being a big baby about his bad memory?? I hope the Eye Patch gives some good info the next episode or they find Jack at least, I need some excitement. The wise cracks here and there can only go so far, although I do appreciate them, just not when it's the whole episode...I give it B-

45. Where the hell is Michael and Walt? Does anyone wonder this or is it just me? And how come the Lost survivor guide didn't have one clip of Walt or Michael... did the writers forget about them or did I miss something?
