"Lost" Diary -- Enter 77

Hey, it's Daniel from TMZ here, back with another edition of the "Lost" Diary.

A lot of the comments said I was too harsh on last week's episode. Now, I did find myself enjoying the episode as it unfolded, but when it was done, and I realized nothing had really happened, I was pissed off. "Lost" is (was?) the kind of show where you absolutely could not miss a single episode or else you wouldn't know what was going on the following week. You could have easily skipped the last two shows and been fine and that's just not what "Lost" is about. Thus, that's the reason I hated last week's show.

This week I am with the usual crew of Ari, Lauren and Matt. Lauren had a dream that tonight's episode of "Lost" would be good. So assuming Lauren can predict the future, we're in for a good show. Let's roll:

10:00 -- Sawyer is mulling around the beach and acting pissy. He calls the new guy "Zorro," and it has now officially reached the point where Sawyer's nickname-calling has jumped the shark for me.

10:01 -- Sayid, Locke, Kate and Rousseau are making their way through the woods, looking for the Others. Note to the producers: more Locke, please!

10:03 -- Old MacOther had a farm, E-I-E-O.

10:06 -- When Sawyer starts bitching about his stuff, I just can't stand it. Does he not have anything more pressing to worry about than his copy of Guns & Ammo? But when Sawyer said "Who are you?" to the new chick, that was great.

10:07 -- My lord, it's like a dream come true. Sun wants Sawyer to stop using nicknames if they win the ping pong match. I LOVE IT!!!

10:08 -- Sayid and the gang are planning on going into the farm. Rousseau has never seen the place. For someone who has been there for 18 years, she does not know the island well at all.

10:10 -- It's Sayid flashback time and he is a chef now. Apparently, he is a good chef because the guy from "Crash" is offering him a job at his restaurant.

10:11 -- Patchy (Mikhail) shot Sayid in the arm and has proclaimed himself the last living member of the Dharma Initiative. I wouldn't lead with that on your resume, pal.

10:16 -- Mikhail is giving us his life story and how he got involved with the Dharma Initiative. He's been on the island 11 years, his hatch is called The Flame, and his job is to "communicate with the outside world." Information is coming fast and furious.

10:18 -- All of the members of the Dharma Initiative died in a war against the Hostiles and the satellite dish doesn't work.

10:19 -- Back to the flashback, where Sayid is going to check out the restaurant, only something tells me Sammy isn't really looking for a chef.

10:21 -- Yeah, Sayid is in trouble. He tortured the wrong person, I am guessing.

10:22 -- Mikhail is quite the host, though something tells me Locke shouldn't be playing that chess game; think "War Games."

10:23 -- Locke couldn't possibly beat the unbeatable computer in chess ...

10:24 -- Sayid thinks Mikhail is lying and that he's not alone. This could get good.

10:27 -- Back on the beach, it's Sawyer vs. Hurley for ping pong supremacy. Ari says he wants to play Sawyer in ping pong; Lauren wants to play him in tonsil hockey. To each their own.

10:29 -- Most fans like Sayid more than I do, but I do enjoy it when he's interrogating someone -- especially when that someone doesn't know they are being interrogated. But I guess Mikhail caught on Sayid's questioning and opted for "ass whooping" over small talk.

10:31 -- Locke was a tad late to get in on the action, wasn't he?

10:33 -- When you're chained to the ground, and someone threatens to cut you up and put in a duffel bag, I don't care who you are, that's got to worry you a little bit.

10:34 -- Sayid did his best Columbo impression to figure out that Mikhail (if that is his name) wasn't alone because the stirrups on the horse outside were set for someone much shorter than Mikhail. Uh, just one more thing Mikhail ...

10:37 -- Sayid won't admit to torturing Sammy's wife. Not sure if I believe him or not.

10:39 -- Is Locke really going to leave Mikhail unguarded to keep playing computer chess?

10:40 -- Yeah he is.

10:41 -- So what do you think happens when Locke wins the chess match? Someone should tell him the whole place is wired with explosives.

10:42 -- "Manual override achieved ... For mainland communication, enter 3-8." Didn't work. "For sonar access, enter 5-6." Neither did that one. How about, "To be magically teleported off the island and straight to Las Vegas, press 7-2"?

10:43 -- And Mikhail woke up. Fun while it lasted. Is it weird that while all this is going on, I can't help but think, "What's going on with the ping pong match?"

10:44 -- Hey, how weird, someone got the drop on Kate. That almost never happens. By the way, I missed Ms. Klugh.

10:45 -- And now I'll miss her forever. RIP Ms. Klugh.

10:49 -- The ping pong match is over and Hurley whooped up on Sawyer. Kinda wanted to see the whooping take place. Oh well.

10:50 -- To kill or not to kill Mikhail, that is the question. He ain't going anywhere.

10:53 -- Boring story about feeling safe, Sayid cries, Sammy's wife forgives him. Blah, blah, blah.

10:57 -- Sayid tells Rousseau that he won't kill Mikhail. Torture is fine. Murder? Not so much.

10:59 -- Maybe Locke shouldn't have typed 7-7.

Alright, so what did we learn this week? The Others would rather be dead than captured ... They would rather the hatches be destroyed than used by someone else ... The Others and the Dharma workers had a war at some point ... Sayid found a map to the Others hideout.

I honestly don't know what to make of this episode. Everything we were told came from a guy who was lying about who he was, so who knows what's true and what isn't. I couldn't help but wonder, was Kelvin lying way back when when he told Desmond he was in Dharma?

Maybe I am being too hard again, but I give this episode a C+. We learned a couple of interesting things (I think), and seeing Sawyer humbled is always good.

But here is my problem with the last few weeks -- there were no TiVo Moments. When "Lost" is at its best, you have to grab the remote a couple of times an episode and either pause it so you can talk about what just happened, or rewind it because what you just saw HAD to be seen again. When Locke and Eko watched the Dharma training video, we immediately rewound it and watched it again. When Locke found the map on the back of the hatch door, we went back, paused it, and studied it as best we could. That is what a good episode of "Lost" does. I haven't done that once in the last three weeks.

So my question of the week is simple: I was completely befuddled about what to make out of this week's show and I need your help. Give me your grade. I am hoping someone can talk me into believing this week's show was better than I realize.

46. OH! And you didn't even comment about the fantastic abscence of your favorite Lostie, Charlie. If he was around, I didn't even notice him. That's gotta at least bring the episode up to a B+!!!!!

47. I loved the episode I give it a strong A- simply because Sayid is so intriguing - I never did understand whether he was telling the truth about NOT torturing the lady because he was so adament about it, but then he admitted to her that he DID (because he was under duress?) anyway, anytime they have Sayid flashbacks it's always good - and I agree about the whole Locke obsession with computers, learn your lesson, dude! Maybe he IS somehow possessed by the island, or he does like being able to walk and be somewhat the center of attention...And when Sawyer said Crouching Dragon I totally lost it. I still laugh thinking about it...that, and the daydreams of pulling on his ponytail for my own pleasure...

48. Why all the confusion about what's true and false? Besides the fact that Mikhail was an Other who donned a DHARMA jumpsuit, everything else was probably true -- there was a war between DHARMA and the Others, and DHARMA lost. Ben & Co. took over the hatches from there. Why would he lie about that?

I thought last night's episode was great, and not just because we FINALLY got answers to long-standing dangling threads:

1.) Did DHARMA know there were other people on the island? (Yes)
2.) What was that massive cable Sayyid found in S1? (Sonar transmitter)
3.) What was up with the glass eye in the abandoned hatch (Patchy's, although this was probably clear since we first saw him)
4.) Why was there a smoldering cigarette in the Pearl if DHARMA was inactive? (Because the Others may still be using them)
5.) Why was there a giant parcel of food in the island back in S2? (The "drop off procedure" is still in place)
6.) How was Danielle stayed alive? (By not being the kind of idiot who climbs into crashed planes, runs through the rain towards visions of a small child speaking backwards, or faces down a giant black smoke monster)
7.) Does anyone care about Nikki or Paolo? (No)

It restored my faith that -- yes, they really do have answers to the random mysteries. The only question is whether they will ever have time to ADDRESS them all.

49. Hi everyone,
I enjoyed last night's episode, but I agree, I would have liked to see more of the ping-pong game too. The magazine "Entertainment" featured a really good article on Lost. The writers have some insight and hints of things to come. I truly don't think they were spoilers, so here goes. The writers said that in March we will find out how Locke ended up in a wheelchair. I'm going with Locke being on the deck that colapsed when Hurley walked out on it, or maybe he got into some kind of shoot out on that commune he was living in, it better not be something mundane like a hit and run. The writers also said that by the end of the season, there will be several deaths. They gave no clues as to who. They also said that there will be a flashback that gives an explanation to how Jack and Clair have some kind of bond. I think they are half brother and sister. Remember when Jack's dad went so Sidney and he tried to see his daugher and that woman wouldn't let him see her or tell him anything about her. Again, that's my speculation. Also Walt and Michael will be back for season 4. How much do you want to make a bet that after the hatch imploded it messed with some kind of electromagnetic field and they are just going around in circles. The writers also said that Libby's character have a flash back episode and we will understand why she ended up in the mental hospital at the same time Hurley did. Also the season finality will be 2 hours. Oh and last but not least, the new "couple" they are also going to have a flashback episode and the writers said after we see it, we will like the characters more and have a better understanding of who they are.

I liked last nights episode, the only thing that made me scream is Locke acting like it wasn't his fault that he blew up the hatch with all the communication equipment. Locke likes to make decisions without considering everyone else's input. He could have grabed Sayid or Kate and told them what was going on, but instead he starts punching keys and look at what happened. I'm sure he will tell everyone it was his destiny to do what he did, but personally, someone needs to slap him around and tell Locke, it's not all about him and his decisions.

Looking forward to next week,
Mary

50. The episode was better than those of late, since they finally got away from the "Who Will Kate Chose?" show. But my question is this, what happened to the horse? The paint with the short stirrups?? Wouldn't they (our good guys) have taken it with them (and the cows too for that matter) when they left the "farm"? They certainly made a big deal about The Cat . . .

51. Hey Sunny - according to the writers, Michael and Walt won't be in this season. As for if they are going to be seen again, they have illuded to yes - just not this season.

Animals seem to be a big thing on this show - Kate's horse, Locke's bear, Sayid's Cat.... I'm sure there is some kind of connection as to why the characters are relating to specific animals.....

52. I agree with your C+. I love your blog by the way. Your comments are always right off the tip of my tongue. I've actually been looking forward to your blog more than the episodes lately since we seem to be in the same faction that feel free to criticize without being "unpatriotic". I was very enthusiastic after I saw the show, but just because it was so much d+++ better than the last two weeks of utter waste. Thank God someone is still capable of asking logical linear questions with confronted with a resource for answers. Sayid became my new favorite character! If I was the actor who played Locke, I'd be so upset-as my husband said-when did he become such a moron?

53. I've been so bored with "Lost" lately that I didn't watch it ON PURPOSE last night. Your blog makes this okay because you seem to feel the same way that I do -- NO NEW PEOPLE, ANSWER QUESTIONS and last but not least, KILL CHARLIE. That is all...

54. This entire show jumped the shark so many times that they now have an act at Sea World. I have one over-arching question in my mind for this show...when are they going to build a movie set so Ginger can take a screen test?

55. We finally got some answers and a teaser about next week. But it was so so. Not sure what Locke was doing. It was almost like someone else had entered his body. Not like Locke at all.
I loved it when Sawyer asked "who are you" I think we were all asking the samething. As for the ping ball table that just happened to be in the air plane, why can't they get something they can really use to get off the island!!
And did I miss the episode where the sky turned purple? I just don't remember that. Did that happened when the latch was blown.
And hey, what about the scientist that were looking for a magnetic charge? Where are they?
So many questions, so little answers

56. Locke is *really* starting to piss me off.

He used to be one of my favorite Lost bad-asses; but now he leaves a dude unguarded to play computer chess? WTF?!

57. I fully agree with the comments I flew back home from a business trip and didn't think twice about Lost-my supposedly fav show. Someone called me when it started to remind me it was on-Sign 2 that I'm not an avid fan anymore-Sign 3 was that when I turned it on it was on mute the whole time because I just thought who cares-I HATE I'M NOT A FAN ANYMORE--IT USED TO BE THE BEST WRITTEN SHOW ON TELEVISION. Oh well another dud.

58. This show has jumped the shark so many times they now have an act at Sea World. Love the blog- hate the show. I just have one over-arching question for the writiers of this show, When are the outcasts going to build a soundstage so Ginger can take a screen test?

59. Oooh I give this episode an A-. I think there is much more then meets the eye. I have read a few other blogs and message boards and there are alot of people out there that analyse EVERYTHING. Past and present. I get really confused too, and I don't have DVR or anything so I just read message boards all day. (I know...geek). So I am wondering, that guy and girl that just all of the sudden showed up (the one Sawyer asked who the hell she is lol) are we thinking MAYBE, they weren't on the flight? Can the be embedded "others"? They seem pretty calm and all of the sudden bossy. There was a table set for 4 at the Flame "hatch". Stuff to think about? I think alot was revealed, but we just don't know it yet. Every episode has signifigance, and if you don't follow it well enough, you just won't "get" it. I love it!

60. Didn't Season one end with Desmond's (or was it Jack's) girlfriend calling to some sort of Russian research station? They've never gone back to that. It makes me believe that someof what Patchy said was true. If not about him, at least about the Dharma project.
