Carol Channing Ripped Off in Hollywood!

9/13/2007 7:58 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Hello Dolly, and gimme dat dress!
Carol Channing
LAPD Hollywood Division is currently on scene at the Hollywood Renaissance Hotel, where they were called on a report of stolen clothes -- from Broadway legend Carol Channing (seen here with the Reagans and Rockefellers).

According to Carol's rep, the 86-year-old Channing arrived at the hotel with her husband Harry Kullijian between 12:30 and 1:00 PM, carrying several pieces of luggage. As they were checking in, a thief made off with one of their bags that contained some a very important -- and historic-- property!

Carol's rep tells TMZ that inside the suitcase, a small black roller bag, was the sparkling "diamond dress" (seen in this picture) that Channing famously wore as Lorelei Lee over 700 times in the stage production of "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes." There may come a time when a lass needs a lawyer!

The valuable garment, which originally had long sleeves, was scheduled to be photographed and then sent to the Smithsonian to be exhibited. Luckily, her 1964 Tony award for "Hello Dolly," which she is also donating to the museum, was in another bag.

She's currently rehearsing for a performance this weekend at the Hollywood Bowl. When asked how Carol was doing, he said, "Carol refuses to focus on the negative. It affects her work."

The hotel surveillance camera has a shot of a person of interest -- which has been given to police.

With everything else crumbling around us in the world ... it's actually refreshing to know that Carol Channing is still glowing, is still crowing, is still going strong.

#11 and #15 go back to school. You are complete morons. Use spelling check dummies!

Hey #11.

Learn how to spell before you ever try to say anything on any site ever again. And don't even start about prayer in schools and christian values and troops in Iraq. This is TMZ. Besides, it is people like you that just cement the fact that I am against everything that you just said (or tried to say since it was so badly written I may need a translator). Shut up, get off the internet, go back to school, or just get a life.

Damn. I don't usually get pissed like this, but that was just the dumbest thing I have ever seen. Well, the dumbest thing today.

...and by the way, I am glad that Carol Channing is alive and well and I hope she gets that dress back. While not my favorite of that era's performers, she is still a legend. Good luck to her and I hope that the dress incident doesn't affect her performance coming up because it very well may be one of her last. At her age, you know.

I'm shocked that TMZ could run a story about "old" Hollywood and manage to be somewhat respectful.

My God #11. You are not going to win any arguement if you your posting is filled with incorrect word usage and spelling. We're you drunk when you wrote that? Seriously. Maybe you grew up in a different CULTER (That's the best one).

Briana: Out of work piece of trash? At 86? Yeah, whatever. She has worked harder and probably seen more and done most of us ever will. That whole generation is better than ours and everyone knows it. Not that they didn't have their whitetrash, but Carol Channing hardly qualifies. Not that I know her any better than you, but really how on god's green earth did she manage to offend you so? And where is it that she is a liar? Hoping for her funeral? Real classy...

Oops that was supposed to say she has done MORE THAN most of us will. Typo central tonight on my part!

The dress has been returned. Good for Ms. Channing and the Smithsonian! Not only is she a bonafide legend, but she's a really nice lady as well. And triple-Tony Award kudos to the TMZ writer who grabbed the "lass needs a lawyer" line from "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend." (Good thing you're not working in TV; you'd be considered too literate for the room.)

"Out of work piece of trash?" Sure hope the author of *that* stunner can find work at age 36, much less 86.

Go Carol Go!
