Ellen DeGeneres' Doggone Nightmare

10/15/2007 9:31 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Talk show queen Ellen DeGeneres is caught in the middle of a doggy tug of war that has left an innocent girl in tears.

Ellen and her girlfriend, Portia de Rossi, adopted Iggy (a Brussels Griffon mix) from Mutts and Moms, a dog adoption agency. But things didn't work out as Ellen planned -- her cats didn't get along with Iggy -- so she gave the pooch to her hairdresser, who has two kids, including 12-year-old Ruby.

Last night, a rep from the agency came to the hairdresser's home, claiming Ellen violated the contract by not informing the agency of the hand-off. The rep demanded to take the dog away. Ellen' s position -- yeah, she should have notified the agency, but she found a loving home and isn't that what counts? The agency rep stuck to her guns and removed the dog with cops present. Ruby is heartbroken; reduced to tears.

Ellen says, "I kept saying, 'If you want to be mad at me, be mad at me, but don't take it out on the family. Don't take it out on the dog.'"

I would like to know why Mutts and Moms did not go by their own policy and do a home check on Ellen. Also on the application it asks about other pets. Why would they adopt out this pup to a home with cats? A reputable rescue would already know if the dog got along with cats and if not, would never have adopted the dog out to a home with cats. Their application, adoption procedures, contract and there responsibility to the dog all seem to have gone out the window when they could say they adopted a dog to Ellen.

It looks like Mutts and Moms will now fell what it is like on the other side of what goes around comes around. The sad part of this besides what she did to the little girl and her family is that Mutts and Moms have heart all reputable rescue. Hopefully future adopters will look close at the contracts and weather or not the rescue is a real non profit (with there own 501c3) before they adopt. Just because they say there a non profit, dose not mean they are.
If you are looking to adopt a pet make sure you are looking at a reputable rescue. They are out there.

Because Mutts and Moms did not do what they say in the contract that they will do by submitting the new owners information to the micro chip company. If they had, then Mutts and Moms would not have been listed on the as the owner on the chip. They had more then enough time to send it in. But like many unrepeatable rescues they do not. So who is not living up to the contract? Looks like Mutts and Moms are not doing what they say they will do either.

Its easier for them to adopt a child from malaysia or africa than it is to adopt a dog.

It seems to me that if Mutts and Moms truly wants to help the animals, then their rules shouldn't be arbitrary. Fourteen is not a magic age where young people learn to treat small dogs well. Every child is different . They missed a truly great opportunity here to be reasonable in evaluating the home and children before removing the dog. They could have gotten great publicity leading to greater donations, instead they chose to use Gestapo like tactics and thus turned themselves into the least likely to succeed rescue group out there. It is one thing to stand strong against the powerful to protect the animals but in this case it seems they chose to take a stand to show how much power they had over the celebrities. What a shame power currupts

I have been watching the news regarding the Ellen Degeneres dog situation, and am furious over the way this was handled. The object of these organizations is to place dogs in loving homes. Even though a contract was violated, it would have been much kinder solution if the Mutts & Moms organization could have gone in and evaluated the new family and made a decision based on that family's qualifications. As for the violated contract, the organization could have turned this into an opportunity to explain the reasons for having this contract in the first place and raise public awareness on the issue in a POSITIVE WAY. As a result of this, I am now reconsidering any further contributions to animal rights organizations because I no longer have faith in the people that are using my money. Shame on you Mutts & Moms!!!

In a world where people get animals then decide they can't take care of them I find it refreshing that Ellen D. would take the time to find a good home for this dog instead of just turning in loose in the streets.....as for this company mutts and moms....well I'll tell everyone I know what a cruel company they truely are...I hope that woman has realized how she hurt those children...

The contract says that the Adopter may be added to the AVID microchip database as an alternate.

Quote from contract:
k. MICROCHIP REGISTRATION. ADOPTER understands that the Avid Microchip remains registered to RESCUE and that ADOPTER may be added to the Avid database as an alternate only.

The rescue group was under no obligation to add Portia's name (the adopter who signed the agreement) to the Avid database. Ellen made it sound like that in one of the TMZ videos, but that is not how the contract is written.

To the owner of Mutts and Mom's: For God's sake if you need the new adoption fee I am sure Ellen or the new owners will pay it. Monitor the family and the little girl for a time and maintain that the dog is safe.

Get a grip! Ellen takes all animal safety to heart. I am sure she wouldnt give the dog to an unsafe family.

Collect your fee, monitor for a month and stop grandstanding you had your moment of fame.

If the rescue's license was suspended by the state of California, wouldn't that render any contract they entered into with anyone null and void? What exactly does California law say about this type of "contract", does anyone know? And since the so called contract wasn't between Mutts and Moms and the hairdresser, how did these people have any legal right to invade the hairdresser's home and demand anything from her? Shouldn't they have taken the matter up in court with Ellen? I suppose if they could have won a judgement in court then they could have taken the dog back but they didn't do that so didn't they really break the law by taking it? Anyone who knows something about California law please jump in and clarify this for me. Thanks.

I have seen first hand what older kids do to small dogs...and its not pretty...the agency has this rule for a reason...to protect the animal.
The kid wants a dog, fine...but get a dog around 30-40 lbs...not a small dog who can't defend itself.

From the TMZ video on this site, I think the hairdresser's condo and backyard look much too small for a puppy! Plus, who was taking care of him during the day ? I bet one reason Mutts & Moms let Portia adopt him is that she promised she'd watch him round the clock. Just because you have love to give and you have a home doesn't mean you have a good or safe home for a puppy. It's unfortunate. If Ellen is really as concerned and kind as she makes herself out to be, she will sign a lease letting the hairdresser and her family move into one of the guest houses or pool houses and THEN see if Mutts & Moms will give Portia the dog back. Put your money and your heart where your mouth is, Ellen!

Seems to me the agency was working on revenge toward Ellen and cared less about the dog. Of coarse they could find another home but why would they feel that they needed to if it wasn't retaliation toward Ellen.
I would never support that agency again and never give contributions again, I also would give the worse of advertisingments to them because they only wanted to prove they had more power than Ellen.
So sorry, Ellen and the little girl, but you did nothing wrong and everything right.

I believe that while Ellen should have contacted the agency "before" giving the dog away she didn't commit any major crime. I can understand one point of the agency being that if everyone decided on their own to break a contract agreement there would be no need for it and it would become null and void.

I feel the dog should go back to the children and let ellen pick up the extra charges if there are any. I grew up with animals and to make the excuse that they are too young is ridiculous. It's a known fact that adults mistreat animals far more than children do. Have a heart and let the dog have a great loving home. After all were you not a child yourself once?
